Heyy!!!!

uuuGH Mr.Phatbreakz....

Unless you go by two names in this forum....I dont believe my reply was aimed at you, instead to the individual who started this thread. As a matter a fact I dont even recall reading any of your replies to this thread, but hey, since we're already on the topic let me just quote you on something myself.

QUOTE:
"Personally,I have nothing to gain by saying that Shannon or Taylor Dayne's early music id Freestyle.I know freestyle when I hear it and that what their music was even though we didn't have a name for it yet".

As far as the Shannon factor is concern...I must say that this is in fact open for debate since Shannon did in fact reach the platinum status with her "Let the music play" Album and was even nominated for a grammy at the time But lets not forget, this thread is questioning the legality of the hightest freestyle charting single not Album. Never the less Shannon was a force to be Reckoned with and her hits are still hot till this day!!!

About Franc Reyes....well lets just say that he was simply depicting the reality of the getto and his own upbringing just as it was for many of us. Would you rather that he sugar coat it for fear of being stereo typed? If anything...At least this time, this point of view is coming from the eyes of a true latino himself and not from some fat Anglo Exec that just wants to spoon feed us what we know is not real! Would you say or feel the same about Spike Lee ? Is he stereo typing his own people through his movies? I truely dont believe that the Hip Hop Community would have appreciated it if he did it any other way !! Keeping it Real!!

But hey we're all entitled to our own opinions 🙂

Peace......Midistar

Right, but we're talking about what they did in the late 80's. Anway, I think that Running, What's On Your Mind, Walking Away & Think are all freestyle. I know you'll disagree which is fine 🙂

Ahh, "Think", I knew I forgot 1 Info Soc freestyle song!!! I'm wit ya on this one Ant... those 4 r freestyle. Now what other "hits" did Info Soc have? I can't recall any OTTOMH.

Sietz

Sietz, there other songs, in my opinion, were not freestyle. This is the case with any Freestyle gropus/artists full length albums. None had all freestyle songs only.

Btw, I spelled your name right 🙂 lol

There are plenty of movies like that already. Not all of us grew up in ghettos and saw all this violence.Everybody has a different reality. So maybe he's "keepin it real" but thats not reality for many of us who are professionals and live a decent life.

ok, got a few answers from the die hard INFO SOC fans:

Well, uh... they are. They use the very same synth sounds, basslines,
and drum tracks as most of the late 80's / early 90's freestyle
releases. Any freestyle DJ knows that Running will get the floor
hopping, and the percapella from What's on Your Mind works great when
you're remixing your own little freestyle mega-mix.

I believe any die-hard InSoc fan will also remind you that Tommy Boy
greatly encouraged (read "forced") InSoc's entire sound in that
direction at the time. Being the naive wide-eyed youths they were,
they had little choice but to produce those tunes in that particular
style (not to mention creative differences within the band). I think
Hack was as close as Kurt got to what he wanted, conceptually, to
produce while still with Tommy Boy (correct me at any time, people).

Anyways... my two pence.

Sounds like they are admitting it is indeed freestyle in it's sound. The basslines, synths, etc have freestyle written all over it. At least they admit it lol

I am sorry to say but Temptation is not the highest charting Freestyle song. Check out the record books. Billboard magazine says it all.

I think you misunderstod me.Some people don't consider "Let the music play " freestyle.Which it is.

Now if only we could get some freestylers to admit it too. That the real test haha

ok, heres another one:

Stuff and nonsense. No one at TB put any such pressure on the band. If
we'd wanted just another freestyle act to go along with TKA (the only
freestyle act on an otherwise rap, technofunk and R&B label), we would
have signed some of the many local acts that all the other now-defunct
freestyle labels were scooping up.

Instead, Insoc was free to do their own thing: nothing on the first
album is freestyle with the exception of "Running", which was written
by Murat Konar and already jamming the South Bronx clubs before we ever
signed them. At the same time, you had all the New York freestyle
producers copying the syncopated bass of "Running" (and, later, "What's
On Your Mind"), so Insoc was in fact setting the trend rather than being
forced into it (and Paul, at least, seemed to have no trouble taking
side gigs producing freestyle tracks for other labels that wanted the
Insoc sound, as well as one for TKA). Certainly you can't even mention
the word "freestyle" in connection with "Hack" and "P&LI".

> I think Hack was as close as Kurt got to what he wanted, conceptually,

Kurt's the only one who can answer that one, but again whatever
pressures he may have felt one way or the other would have been coming
from within the band, not from the label.

Ahh didn't planet rock come out before running? Info put a new twist to it thats all

No argument here. Now probably the most freestyle sounding sonf they did after "running" was "think" now there's now way you can deny of its latin flava horns and synth sound.Even the words and vocal arrangement scream Freestyle.

INSOC was originally a new wave band.
but like many new wave bands..they cam out with record leaning to much to disco. disco meaning the dance music of that time.

we are disco today......but diferent term since SOME PEOPLE LIKE TO SEGREGATE SOUNDS AND GENRES DUE TO TEMPO OR ANY LIL EXCUSE.

the disco of the early 80's was a mix of the electro funk and the dance records coming from new wave bands from europe (who all bit off alot of the 70's disco records).

So INSOC, ilike many bands of that time were rediscovered and became a latinhiphop phenomenom. even in the tommy boy re-relaes of their album not long ago..describes them as a group that took a huge part in the LATINHIPHOP movement due to the direction and musical influences.

Speaking of EXPOSE....bands like Erotic exotic in miami, who was the original expose band and traveled with them.....and others like secret society.......where all bands that were suposed to do new wave, but came out with records that became freestyle anthems and therefore they identified themselves as freestyle bands. same thing later with linear.

but all these bands came out with a sound and records that would bridge that sound new wave and eurorock and hi nrg to freestyle dance records.
there were so many of type of bands like these.

they didnt sit there and say this is this and this is that.
they made music.

same as expose and all other artist that came out with balalds and diferent forms of music.

Freestyleartsit had freestyle balads. the songs where freestyle in structure and elements, but slowed down. not soulfull enough for R&B, but had the capability to cross over to the r&b ,adult cont, and pop market.

Just like Disco records from the 70's had many Disco ballads:
example celi b had "super man" as a huge disco record...and also had "for the love of my man" as a disco ballad. (celi b aslo came out with a freestyle record later ' "i cant let go"' also produced by martinmee)

what made those disco or freestyle ballads was elemnts put into the record...musical structure, vocal tone, elements.

I asked lewis martinee who made "seasons change" and he told me what i am saying to you guys now. it was freestyle. alot of the ballads done from freestyle artist are freestyle influenced or driven to be freestyle balads.

so its not something im saying, its something that i figured (dugh) and had the power to find out.

even on the demo reels of that material by expose, still in the studio..when i cleanit, the boxes say freestyle ballads.

people forget what a freestyle artist is or was . It was an artist that FREE STYleD. also meaning...they did other styles of music besides freestyle or incorporated freestyle to bridge to other genres. we, as a freestyle comunity were known for that.

all we see now is people sitting and saying this is that and that is this and segregating everything!

Freestyle..we did it all. the community and the obvious mentality (diferent from today)was more open and experimental.

the mainsteram always put freestyle under a microscope to disect it...and now within the community..some pockets are doing the same.

why?

but yes..freestyle had its ballads. thats what makes us diferent from other dance artist. you will find that compared to trance artist, house artist (except if they go gospell) they have no ballads. freestyle was the only ones who not only had ballads..but incorporated some kind of freestyle form into those balalds..justlike the disco artist of the 70's did.also musicaly bridged to other genres. we got alot of respect from the music comunity for that. today we dont have that..obviuosly. i need not say why.

and once again..we are all disco....4th generation of disco now.

And talk about disco..we are very rooted to 70's disco as well.
wealways were and always will.

also..regarding those who read joey gardners freestyles greatest beats..........THAT ONLY 25 PERCENT OF THE STORY!!!!!!!!
Although..much love and respect.

one more thing.....i forgot that lewis was specifically takling about..."let me be the one", "seasons change" and "december" when talking about freestyle ballads in his part.

but like i said...read above.

( i dont get my info from websites...i actually wrote for some.
i dont get my info from grapevines...i getthem fromthe source themselves and our undergorund knowledge. passed down from generation to generation. Above all...i was young...but old enough to witness and see and experience the whole thing.

one more thing.......alot of those newwave and dance records of the early 80's hailing from europe and the u.s...not only crossed to the freestyle market........but also flooded the overlooked gay market.
which was the prodominant "disco' crowd again in the early 80's.
If it wasnt dance music for the freestyle people..it was hi nrg for the gay masses (mixed with early house).

(which is why victor calderone and junior vazquez remixed "running" and "whats on your mind"...to hit directly to todays gay circuit...and it did.)(same with shanons.."letthe music play")

yeah, that butch from yaz was family too.lol.!!!!!!!!!

so freestyle records really bridged inmore ways than one!!!

God bless freestyle!!!
