Ask the old partners in Tazmania Records who laughs their way to the bank. One partner now sells cars, another works at a hospital, while another has opened a pizza shop. None of them are in the music business anymore. Because they couldnt afford to provide for their families by staying in it.

but at the time, when they were running the lable, i bet they were laughing all the way to the bank!! not now, but back then they were.

Even though I am a new member at CF I been checking the site out for some time and my 1 question to Rhoq is how come you always criticize everyone. I mean you criticized TKA which has made a great comeback with their new album, and now Johnny O. From what I hear Diana sounds better than the one from collage and now I am waiting to hear his latest remake of Fantasy Girl. Just wondering if there is some sort of jealousy here.

peace

FreestyleIzLife...Since you are new, please allow me to officially welcome you to the forum.

Much like your name suggests, Freestyle is my lifeforce (so to speak). I have have Freestyle running through my veins...

Why am I so critical? Well, I guess someone has to be (so it might as well be yours truly). I am a non-conformist. I don't believe in playing "follow the leader". I refuse to praise these artists for recording new material just because everyone else does. I believe in calling things just how I see them. If I don't like a new song or the direction someone's music is going in - I am going to speak my mind. As in the case with TKA and now Johnny O - I don't like the way it sounds. This is just my opinion and I believe that I have every right to plead my case, just as you have every right to challenge it.

As far as remakes go, I honestly believe that over the last 7 years, Freestyle has been flooded with remakes for lack of new material. This practice has lead to downfall and discredit of our music and has helped it to become a joke in the eyes of the dance music community.

What Freestyle needs right now is to look into the past and help to bring back the sounds that helped it become what it once was. I don't see a remake of "DIANA" or "FANTASY GIRL" doing that...

Am I jealous? LMAO - Why would I be jealous? If we (The PFC) had the finances together, we would be recording our own songs right now...There is no room for jealousy in Freestyle...Enough shady practices already take place...

The dilemma of freestyle

I actually agree with alot of what Rhoq has to say.
I feel that freestyle fans have found themselves in a bit of a dilemma. We are very loyal and dedicated fans and we want to see freestyle not only survive but prosper. Unfortunately, because freestyle has become an endangered species, many of us feel OBLIGATED to support any new releases (regardless of the quality of the material). We feel like we HAVE to support it because, if we don't, freestyle might eventually not survive.

It becomes a vicious circle where we continue to support sub-standard releases. And producers and record companies, seeing this, continue to put out sub-standard material knowing fans will support it. Heck, I could probably take some cheesy 80's song and put a freestyle beat to it and I would probably have a hit!

While I'm not as pessimistic as Rhoq regarding the dearth of good material in the last seven years (and he does have a habit of exaggerating in this regard), I do agree with him that labels such as ZYX are flooding the market with sub-standard releases KNOWING that freestyle fans will buy them, no matter how bad they are.

Does everyone really want the "old" sound to come back and not allow FREESTYLE MUSIC/ARTISTS" to progress into the future? Why dont we just bottle it up and keep it for ourselves? It would be nice, but im willing to let the younger generation feel the vibe that we got, with a sound they can like. Not a sound that they feel is "old" and "80's".

Kenny, I think you misunderstood my point. I'm not advocating that freestyle shouldn't progress or that only old freestyle is good. There is a lot of good new freestyle that I love (Synthia Figueroa, Elissa, Anthony Norris, Sharyn Maceren, etc.). However, there is also a lot of new freestyle that is BAD. My point is certain labels tend to release more crap than others knowing that freestyle fans will buy it just because it is "freestyle".

Do you think cheesy remakes of 80's ballads is "progress"? 😕

Yeah because one of the guys was working construction full time, the other was a mobile DJ, and the other was roofing full time. The music studio, by-the-way, was in one of their father's basements.

Rhoq... If I may interrupt

I don't think that it is Rhoq's main intention to "badmouth" freestyle artists. I just think he'is sick and tired of being promised the next wave of good Freestyle, and being spoon fed a bunch of recycled music.

Bassy was very interested in finding out more about my old publication, Atomic Reaction Presents: Freestyle Music Magazine as well as Jose Martinez's Freestyle Focus Music Magazineso I dug out the library to look through them as well as other publications, and when I was publishing my magazine I can tell you for a fact there were at least a dozen singles, and maybe 5 or 6 new full length albums being released a month! We're talking brand new material, not a bunch of remakes!

This website, along with Johnny O, and ZYX, have been hyping the return of Johnny O to the recording studio for some time now. we have all heard the song snippets, and have our new favorites.

So according to the ZYX website "Diana" is slated to be the first single. And on the maxi single will be new mixes of "Fantasy Girl". This will be ZYX's 4th time of re-releasing "Fantasy Girl" commercially. Already released by ZYX on maxi-single were Fantasy Girl Remix `97, Fantasy Girl Remix `98, and in 2000 Fantasy Girl-New Episode. It was also used twice during one megamix on a maxi-single!

ZYX has gotten more miles off of Johnny O and "Fantasy Girl" then I get off a full tank of gas in my Mustang!

Better yet this is as bad as Chubby Checker and "The Twist". Chubby gave us "The Twist", then "Lets Twist Again", "Slow Twistin" "The Texas Twist" "Twist It Up", plus his own remake of the Twist with the Fat Boys!

ZYX is not run by Freestyle fans. ZYX is run by a bunch of guys in suits with calculators, and they know Johnny O re-recording Collage's "Diana" backed up with two more remixes of "Fantasy Girl" is going to sell a lot of copies. "It's all about the Benjamins!"

ZYX by-the-way has listed no release date yet for Johnny O's new full length album.

I agree with you. It seems like Rhoq likes to badmouth our beloved Freestyle artists.
i have seen him say things about artists but really only constructive critisism and things that would make them better. never personal attacks like "tka or johnny o sucks" and leave it at that. he will go on to explain why he doesn't like it, for example that they are remakes, or the production sounds bad. i don't agree with everything he says, but if you were around long enough i think you would know he loves freestyle.

😱 OOH Gornicevo, what a great question!!! 😱 a great question to those who say our music needs to progress, yet we get remake after remake, or someone or some group using a different dance style.
the way some people say freestyle should progress, at some point it will no longer be trance or euro or house. that is what some people here have been calling "new freestyle". if freestyle is to progress, if anything, it should be sounding like Sharyn Maceren (example-"One and One, "They Put Me On The Mix"), Rockell (example-"Tears"), Angelina (example-"I Don't Need You Love"), Rosalinda (example- "Give Me All Your Love", or some other artists whose music we can still at least recognize as freestyle and not trance, house, or something else.
and to Kenny, about the younger generation feeling a vibe we got with a sound they like, i can tell you johnny o's new euro sounding track is something that would appeal to people are age who listened to euro back then. today's real young generation does not like that dated euro sound. they are listening to music like trance (example- Ian Van Dahl). hey check Texas, there are many people younger than us that like freestyle better than euro or some of that other music. same in parts of California.

I'm with you on this one Cafreestyler, well stated. I can't say that I agree 100% with what Rhoq says all the time either, but I do respect him and his opinion as a member and it’s obvious that he is trying to make a positive difference and it’s not fair to categorize that as "badmouthing" artists.

About ZYX again.....

On their Freestyle Series you can find a bunch of Songs what never sounds like Freestyle or have nothing to do with Freestyle for Example "Sheila E".....

When i buy a Sampler what is descibed as a Freestyle CD then i will listen only to Freestyle not other Genres and Sheila E is real old stuff.

That is what makes me angry about Zyx and also i contacted Zyx many times and get no response from them. And when i hear then, that Zyx cares about their Artists and promote them...i can laugh again, when they dont care about the consumers like me or others then they never cares really about the Artist. The main thing is putting money in the bags !!!!

Peter, don't forget that the word "FREESTYLE" is not ours anymore. it is used to describe many forms of music. perhaps the SHELIA E song you mentioned "is" a freestyle version?

That would be Anthony Ponzio's father's basement. Sometimes when you would call Taz, Ponz's father would answer the phone, lol...I'll tell you what though, the Taz guys were always cool with the PFC. They always had time to talk to us and hang-out...I am sorry that they have left the music business all together...

LMAO

That is one of the points I have been trying to make for years now!!!

As far as progress in Freestyle goes...I have said it so many times in the past you guys should be tired of hearing it: There is just so much change and progress Freestyle can go through before it is not Freestyle any longer.

With that said (again), I fail to see where the "Progressive" sound has helped to elevate or resurrect Freestyle music. Every progressive song that comes out either sounds like "FEELS SO GOOD" by Lina Santiago or "IN A DREAM" by Jossette. There are very few Progressive Freestyle songs out there that are fresh and original sounding because most of them are already imitating something that has already been done. At least with Old School Freestyle, you have originality even if a certain elements have to be present in order for it to be Freestyle...

Jason, cafreestyler, Perspo...Thanks for your support.

It is never my intention to bad mouth any of the Freestyle artists. I am not on a crusade to ruin careers as some people have accussed me of doing, lol. Like I have said earlier, I believe that a lot of this new material being released could be and should be better than what it is. An artist like Johnny O or even TKA have a legacy that they need to live up to. They have a history of making some great and memorable songs. When they release new material that is sub-par to music that is expected of them, I am going to be vocal about the situation.

I am not going to sit here with my mouth shut and just say "oh my god, you're my favorite singer. I love you, your new material is the best stuff you have ever done" (you can insert any artist's name)...Especially knowing what the new material sounds like.

I always try to be considerate of the artists' feelings, I never bash anyone on a personal level. I always try to critique the music only. It is in fact constructive criticizm. And yes, there is a rare occassion when something new is released and I have nothing but praise...I just can't remember when that last happened.

---------

FreestyleIzLife...You are entitled to your opinion. Think of me however you would like to. I am sure you are not the first person to have a negative image of me. I still offer nothing but respect for you.

I am only here to help Freestyle to be the best it can be.

you know what about the people who aren't artists, performers, t.v. people and the like, who think they are better than anyone else? who think it's there right to be overly opionated about the person next to them. it's not just the artist or people in the media. my dominican hairstylist thinks shes better than god himself, i've put her in her place many times myself, because i agree not one person is better than the other, I myself make it a point to let people know that i don't think i'm better than anyone. Just to make things clear. because other artists aren't hear to speak for themselves, or choose not to , and I can understand why.
