OMG 1988

Summer of '88!!!

I was 12-3/4 years old!! (remember doing that???)We just moved out to suburb hell! We used to go hang out at my cousin's house and I would follow him and his friends around while they were skate boarding and breakdancing and fixing their cars listening to freestyle! I was "in love" with his friend Sandy!! I used to fight with my dad about my "noise"! But Daddy!! you don't know anything about music, you just like stuff from back home! MOM!!!!!!!!!!!!"

We went to New York that summer, and we were in Brooklyn! I remember spending all my money on bootleg freestyle mixes off the guys on the street corners!!! I still have those!!

We drove my dad nutz the whole drive home!!! He couldn't hear himself think he said!!!
When we got home, pure lying in the backyard and tanning while the beats were playing or running through the sprinklers!!!

Those were the dayz......

Damn, if the Summer of 1988 wasn't the BEST DAMN YEAR of my life then I don't know WHAT was !!! So many damn memories from that year, it would take me 10 pages to write em all down ...

Ever feel like you'd give up EVERYTHING YOU HAVE NOW, just to go BACK to a certain time in your life ?!?!

I'd give up everything to be able to re-live 1987 to 1990 ... truly the most MEMORABLE years of my life ...

i was 5 years old, and i still remember hearing Sweet Sensation's "Hooked On You", Nocera's "Summertime Summertime", everytime I hear these songs I always get chills! You know I also remember seeing the video to "Hooked On You" on TV as well! NO BULLSH*T!

SUMMER OF 88 WAS AWESOME. THE BEST RADIO STATION AT THE TIME WAS HOT 103.5 BUT ONLY IF YOU WERE LUCKY ENOUGH TO LIVE IN BROOKLYN YOU WERE ABLE TO TUNE INTO B91 AND HEAR THE BEST FREESTYLE MUSIC EVER. I WAS STARTING TO GET MY TASTE OF THE CLUB SCENE GOING TO ESCAPES OUT IN LONG ISLAND. THEY USED TO ALWAYS HAVE FREESTYLE PERFORMERS EVERY FRIDAY NIGHT. I JUST STARTED D.J.ING AND WAS BUYING A LOT OF FREESTYLE RECORDS. I GOT MY FIRST CAR THAT SUMMER AND WENT WITH ALL MY FRIENDS TO ALL THE FEASTS AROUND BROOKLYN.I KNEW THAT THE NEXT SCHOOL YEAR WOULD BE THE BEST BECAUSE I WAS GOING TO BE A SENIOR AND I REALLY HAD A LOT OF FUN. I'M PRETTY SURE IT WAS SUMMER OF 88 THAT THEY HAD A BIG FREESTYLE CONCERT ON THE SIDE OF THE PARKING LOT NEXT TO CEASERS BAY I SAW JUDY TORRES PERFORM THERE FOR THE FIRST TIME, I SAW SHANA, I SAW MELLOWMAN ACE PERFORM MENTIROSSA, AND I SAW A FEW OTHER GROUPS. THAT WAS THE BEST TIME I EVER HAD AT A FREESTYLE CONCERT. I ALSO REMEMBER GOING TO CEASERS BAY BAZZAR EVERY SINGLE WEEKEND. LOL

1988 marked my second year as Program Director for WCYC (90.5 FM) in Chicago. I also hosted a Freestyle music and interview program on Friday mornings and Saturday afternoons. Everyone who was any one who came through stopped by my "Saturday Afternoon Special" show. Ask around, and you'll find dozens who made the "Wall of Fame" at WCYC.

I was also hosting concert/dance parties at Chicago's A.C. Club, Centrum Hall, Navy Pier, Union Hall, Highlanders and even the St. Pius Church Hall! Everybody was Freestyle crazy. I introduced acts such as Soraya, Bonton, FFWD, Mark Imperial, White Knight, Sa-Fire, Babie and Keyes,Tyree Cooper...

I dug into my dusty box of old music logs and playlists and the closest I got to 1988 was WCYC's top forty list for the first part of 1989, which included cuts released in 1988, check it out and realize that these songs are now at least teenagers!!!

Baja, Samantha Fox wasn't a porn star....There WAS a porno star named Samantha Fox, but it wasn't the singer who sang all my fav songs like "touch me" "naughty girls".......Most people assumed it was the same person b/c the singer Samantha Fox was all into posing nude and shit. Not the same person though.

SUMMER 1988.

I was 11 years old, riding my Christian Hosoi Santa Cruz skateboard till the wheels fell off!....And of course listening to freestyle Mega-mixes by the man himself Cameron Paul of KMEL (San Fransisco) back then!! Those were the times!!! The summer of 1987 was the best yet though!!!!!!! Later. 2001.
