If freestyle is a mixture of hip hop and dance, then MY BOO by Ghost town D.J.'s is one of the most perfectly made freestyle songs to me.

"My Boo" is booty bass (Miami bass) such as 2 Live Crew, MC Ade, Poison Clan, Tag Team, 69 Boyz, Kinsu, Kilo Ali, etc.

I guess it could also crossover to the breakbeat category. I've seen Dj Laz and Jonny Z. both put on freestyle compilations along with whoever sings "lookin for the butta".

Pamp and Da Knox-Butta
Yeah, I've seen DJ laz and Jonny Z (Man I love them) but they're more Miami Bass-called Latin Bass nowadays. The song "Lookin' for the butta" as well as Pamp and Da Knox's other releases such as "Shake" and "Switch" is either Hard House or Miami Bass depending on their mixes. But in my opinion, one remix of "Butta" can pass for freestyle because it uses Planet Patrol's "Play at Your Own Risk" method.

Dana Harris "as we lay" had a freestyle beat, but no extra sounds like "a little bit of ecstacy", "set u free", and "love's high (album version)", but it did use the same beat. "summertime summertime" by Corina had parts in her song that had that same beat. Anyway, I really don't know what is freestyle anymore because.....

Dana Harris is really a mixture of bass and R&B. Remember, I guess it's what many consider Freestyle, and I know Dana Harris and Ghost Town DJs would not fit that spot. Back then, if you listen to S.O.S. Band's "Just Be Good To Me", it can pass for Freestyle but many back then and still consider it just good-fun disco.

Also, Anquette's "I Will Always Be There For You" (1989) can be considered freestyle although largely she/they (Anquette Allen is the lead, but Anquette is really a group) is bass, signed to Luke SKyywalker records in 1986. "Respect", "Shake It-Do the 61st"-bass.

Remember, Miami Bass and Freestyle are sisters but do have their own unique sounds and genres to classify them apart (such as House and "Detroit House", or Techno).

On Planet Rock...yes, it is one of the most sampled songs in history. Not only is the beat imitated, but so are their words. For example, Lianna uses "Feel the Groove" in her 1998 hit "Feel it". "Planet Rock", "Rock It Don't Stop It", etc. However, it is Electro-Funk first before it can be Freestyle. It birthed the Jonzun Crew, Planet Patrol, Rocker's Revenge, etc.

What about that Jazz song with a freestyle beat and the little bells? It wasn't first, but what is the name of that song?
paul hardcastle's rainforest, i think

Well I still say that if songs were played in a Freestyle ONLY! Club back in the good ol' days then it is Freestyle!

So say the DJs who played them...

C'mon people...

DOES IT REALLY MATTER? (At least to anyone outside our little dysfunctional circle?)

If we could only channel a little bit of this energy away from the "freestyle" issue, we might just cure cancer, solve world hunger, and find the fountain of youth.

Your very intelligent minds are being wasted this very minute by this poointless quest.

Let's go have some Chee-tos and Pepsi and watch some Cartoon Network (Olive the Other Reindeer Saves Christmas is on tonight).

I believe the first freestyle single was Nayobe's "Please Don't Go".

Shannon and Tina B. were originally described as "electro-funk" records. Later on, they were lumped in with freestyle.

I don't know the year it was released, but I wonder where Alisha's "All Night Passion" fits in here? Is it electro-funk, freestyle, disco, or what?
alisha came out in 1986..i consider let the music play the first freestyle song..
i dont hear any disco in that song..

I have always thought that "I'm Ready" Kano had to be on the list but I guess it's considered more of a Dance/Disco track.

But that was a sik beat.

Hey yo Puta, Let the music play is the earliest freestyle song i know and probably is.

Im tired of so many people say that any of Nayobe songs was the first freestyle joint. This is NOT true. Her first joints were back in "85" and to avoid further arguments to play it safe i'd say the earliest "84". Same with Lisa Lisa with her first "84" joint "i wonder if i take you home". Shannons- Let the Music Play and Al Naafyish- Harish were both made in "83" and were the earliest tracks. that "planet rock" by african bambatta could've also been one of the earliest tracks its just i dont know what year it was produced.

Oh, and also "let the music play" is no where near disco. Its straight up freestyle with a capital F.
that is sooooo truuuueeeee :fkinaman

1st Freestyle Muzik song...

In my opinion, I think it was indeed PLANET ROCK...it was the precursor in which Freestyle muzik has evolved from to date!!! <<LIQUID11>>

I don't know if this was ever asked, but I'm curious on everyone's opinion here! What is considered the "very first" Freestyle song by YOU Freestyle fanatics??? Some pals 'o' mine say Jenny Burton's tune "I remember what U like", others say Shannon's "Let The Music Play". I also hear "Planet Rock" considered as THE 1st freestyle jam. Gimme feedback. And 'foithamore'...Who coined the term "Freestyle"? Let's get some opinions my Freestyle brothers & sisters!

I know they weren't really considered freestyle but freetyle came from these songs.. these were 80's dance classics which we did not have a name for, then came Latin Hop Hop and changed to freestyle.. I have so many records ThaT I could post, but I will be here for days....

Alright, I'm not trying to be mean or anything, but everything before Shannon was considered electro-funk or nowadays, proto-Freestyle as can be indicated by various sources from back then till now. For instance, "Shaft" by Isaac Hayes was considered proto-disco although many people claim it as disco (disco truly began by late 1973 and definitely by 1974). Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" is not really disco but synth-pop geared towards R&B-oriented music. I know back then though, many still classifed Shannon as disco as well as Evelyn "Champagne" King's "Love Come Down" and Aretha's "Jump to It". But in reality, these songs were largely not disco because the use of machines and styles associated with their songs. But I do have a lot of respect for Vega and Hearthrobs as well as other clubs and producers and DJs for keeping freestyle alive and helpind it gain success.

you hit it right on the button.. '

THE THING ABOUT FREESTYLE MUZIK IS THAT ALOT OF RADIO STATIONS PLAY IT OUT THERE JUST AS "FILLER MUZIK" (USUALLY DURING A LUNCH BREAK OR DURING THE 5:00PM TRAFFIC JAM) which is great, but nobody hits harder with Freestyle than the Bay Area, especially KSJO!! They hit the YAY HARD with true Bay Area freestyle whether its NEW or OLD SKOOOL!!! Hell yeah..KEEP FREESTYLE ALIVE...when I bang Freestyle in Fresno, CA, alot of people look at me with a smile and say "Yeah, I remember that jam!!!" I digg that from Cali..always keep true to its roots...<<LIQUID#11>>

Coining The Term Freestyle...

THE WAY I ALWAYS UNDERSTOOD IT AS A KID...THAT FLAVOR OF MUZIK WAS COINED "FREESTYLE" BECAUSE AT THAT TIME, IT HAD A STYLE ALL ITS OWN, THUS COMING UP WITH ITS OWN STYLE, FREE FROM WHAT PEOPLE CONSIDERED THEMSELVES ACCEPTABLE MAINSTREAM AT THE TIME....I SURE WISH FREESTYLE CAME TO THE VALLEY, WE STILL BANG THAT OVER HERE!!! >>LIQUID11<<
