I'm sure that name wasn't around back in the old days with people like nayobe and lisalisa. And I wasn't around to witness all this as it was first happening, so what did everybody here call freestyle music? 😕

I always knew it as either "latin hip-hop" or "club music" - and when SAFIRE, COVER GIRLS, SWEET SENSATION and a few others got major airplay on stations like, WPLJ 95.5 and Z-100 (nyc), then they were consider crossover pop music.

I also remember peeps calling it "The S#!%", unless that was just me, lol. But Latin Hip Hop was the main title.

it did not last long on philly radio once in a while i hear it in the am and the djs talk like they love it after the song is over but they dont play it much all i hear is nstink etc and rap

not NEW YORK! I guess all areas had thier owns vocabulary!

LMAO that sh*t is funny Kenny, electro what?, back in my old stoppin' grounds in Brooklyn and Queens it was know as "CluB" or as many might have guessed "Guido" music!!
"KeeP :spin that Freestyle"

FrEEjacK00...LMAO!!! We didn't have any big, fancy name to it back in the day. It was all "GREAT!!!" Even the term "LATIN HIP-HOP" wasnt being used. The records were tossed on the bis at the record store usually under "DANCE" or "POP/TOP 40".

Well - Clifton, NJ is only 16 miles away from the NY boarder. I grew up listening to Hot 103/Hot 97, Z-100, WPLJ, KISS & WBLS!!!

Rhoq, i was busting your chops but honestly, i dont ever recall those terms being used when i was growing up. most of those descriptions you mentioned werent used until the at least the mid 90's.

I know Kenny - we love to bust each other chops!!!

I believe the radio stations that targeted the more "urban" market (KISS/WBLS) used the term Electrofunk as they classified the early Freestyle (Shannon, Lisa Lisa, etc.) right along with stuff like "ONE MORE SHOT" by C-Bank, "PLANET ROCK" by Afrika Bambattaa, and "EGYPT, EGYPT" by Egyptian Lover...I have never heard the dance or mainstream orientated stations refer to it as such.

🙂

why do us fans adore "labeling" music? i guess we like saying "hey, this is mine" type of deal. I spoke to many freestyle artists (mostly old school) and they tell me they really hate it when they get labeled with thier music. I sort of understand why. some fear that they will get "pigeon holed" into a catagory that is sometimes considered "dead", therefore making it hard for the artist to go and get more work in the music field in other realms.

Hey In Jersey and for most part

Club Music was the most popular!!! That was the most in my town.....
