Well, here in Miami, it was called Club Music in the middle 80's. Then 88 to early 90's it was classified as Freestyle. If my memory serves me right.

Rhoq: Afrika Bambata and Egypt Egyps was 80 -82 music. I remember a club in Miami, on 57th Avenue and US1 called Manhattan where they played all that type of music. It would get slamming packed on Sunday nights.

I honestly don't recall it ever being called Electro funk? That was the titles given to the songs that had the sound like Apache, Electrick Kingdom, and so forth.

But, that's just on my memory chips...I've lost some of its storage..IM SERIOUS.

Take care,

it usually fell under "Club" music or Latin House:blah

I remember it was mainly
"Latin Hip-Hop" or "Latin Dance"

Now a Days it's probably easier
to tell people "Club Music"
cuz they can relate to that
instead of Freestyle!

there were many type of "club music" names once "freestyle" became a strong genre. it became a very "loose" word desribing many. there was also techno, rap, and even "synth-pop"! they too were called "club music".

LET'S PUT THE CARDS ON THE TABLE, AS HISTORY WILL FOLLOW

FIRST YOU HAD THE ELECTRO SOUND,WHICH WERE ARTIST'S SUCH AS C-BANK, TWO SISTERS, TINA B, FREZZE...

SECOND YOU HAD THE SHANNON SOUND, WHICH WERE ARTIST SUCH AS SHANNON, DAN HARTMAN -NAME OF THE GAME AND ALEEM WITH RELEASE YOURSELF

IN 1985 THE SOUND ON THE STREET STARTED TO CHANGE, WITH ARTISTS LIKE NAYOBE, LISA LISA WHICH YES WAS A TOP 40 ARTIST, AND LEATHER & LACE,

AS WE MOVED INTO 1986 THE TERM FREESTYLE WAS USE MORE LOOSLY AND FREELY, WITH PRODUCTION FROM THE LATIN RASCALS, LIL LOUIE VEGA, AND CLUBS SUCH AS DEVILS NEST, HEARTTHROB AND 1018, ALL THESE ARTIST LIKE COVER GIRLS, SA-FIRE, SWEET SENSATION, & TKA BEING WERE BEING PLAYED ON TOP 40 RADIO STATIONS, RECORD STORES AS FAR AS I KNOW, AND I BEEN TO A LOT OF STORES REFERRED TO THIS MUSIC AS FREESTYLE...HOT 103 EVEN REFERRED TO IT AS FREESTYLE NOT CLUB MUSIC, CLUB MUSIC WAS KNOW AS THE HOUSE JAMS, THEY DID MENTION AS HEARD IN THE CLUBS, BUT THAT DOES NOT MAKE IT CLUB MUSIC AS IT TITLE...

ELECTRO WITH JOHN ROBIE, ARTHUR BAKER AND JELLYBEAN WAS THE ORIGINAL BIRTH OF FREESTYLE AS FOR A LOT OF THE BEATS ARE STILL REPRODUCED AND SAMPLED TODAY IT WAS JUST LABELED AS SOMETHING ELSE...

HeartThrob was one of the musics original names because many of the artists had most of their performaces at The HeartThrob Club. Freestyle was pretty much a name that came up in the 90's

NO, FREESTYLE WAS NOT A WORD THAT CAME UP IN THE 90'S, I HAVE RECORDS DATED FROM 85 THAT SAY FREESTYLE MIX ON THEM...

Let me think...............

Ok, you might not believe this one, but back in the day (in Toronto that is) they used to call it "Gino Beats" which is a term associated with Italians. Not that I have anything against Italians, but this term used to frustrate me as did not think the Ginos deserved full credit for "Freestyle". For me I don't care what you call it because always has been and will be the only music that always gets my blood pumping. I thank God for these heavenly beats called _________________.
