Maybe some of you new school artist need to work harder......the fact remains Freestyle in the 80's was when it was most popular, why was it???? it certainly wasnt MAIN stream, outside of the big cities like NYC, Miami, Chicago, LA and a few others, nobody even knew what freestyle was never mind even hearing a song, Freestyle is a type of music like Rock and Roll or Country, the music may evolve but the basic concept is the same, but the music for the most part is the same. Sure we all would like something new, but dont stray to far from the origins or it wont be heard!

Oooop.

Sorry, I believe the new schoolers work hard.

They probably work harder than the old schoolers did.

The old school artists had the push of major labels. Atlantic, Capital, Atco, Colombia, Arista, and other major labels all had freestyle acts on their rosters. Today, smaller labels, or independent releases are the only venues for the new schoolers to follow. They have to work harder to get their music heard.

Yeah they had the labels, but it wasnt like they fell into their LAP, they had to work to get on those labels, put good music out and the fans will listen, this is comming from a fan!!

Oh you guys! Stop taking KTU for granted!! Take it from your homie from MIAMI that has suffered through her loss of Party 931!!! I think that was the only station worth listening to especially because they played those one hour 12 o clock mixes during weekdays and their 2 hour sunday mix. After they got off the air ,all i was left with was my cds!
So like a lot of ppl were saying, even if its the old stuff thats playing..appreciate it..if not be your own DJ 🙂

Its Kool That Ya Play Freestyle, But The Same Sheit Every Week Is Wack. Play New Stuff. Get Nu Image, Pain, Bernardo, Manny, Latin Nation, Marre...artist That Ppl Rarely Know About On Rotation.

I know.. they always play the same old school freestyle over and over again. Even when they play the new stuff not all the people over here in ca hear it which sucks. oh well. Freestyle lives always in our hearts.

Then I recommend sir that you go to sirius radio for all your old school needs.

As for Baltazar, you call yourself a fan but then you say maybe new school artists aren't working as hard AND THEN you say "put good music out and the fans will listen"? That's like saying new school music sucks.

In my opinion, freestyle will still be around with or without KTU. I know that, you know that, and every member on this website knows that. New school freestyle has been around for over a decade EVEN WITHOUT THE SUPPORT OF MAINSTREAM RADIO, so lets not start with what will the world be like if KTU has to drop the old school sunday night show. I believe TOO MANY people give credit to KTU and thanking Judy and James all the time believing they are keeping freestyle (well, old school) alive some how.

It's obvious KTU plays freestyle because it's part of their dance format, and it helps their station differ from other stations, not because they believe in the music.

And I also know there's a big difference between listening to a freestyle song on the radio and listening to one on your CD player. Which is easily noticable. People like that want or maybe even need to feel that freestyle music is "still in" with the genre. Either that or they don't want to feel old lol.

I don't think any harder then Poze, Ashley, Artie, Willie, Nu Image, Pain, Sonya, Myself among others can work anymore. Speaking of myself I have been doing this for so many years now and it's get harder and harder, and then Losing my 2 brothers who were the back bone of the group, didn't make it any easier.Yet until this day I bust my ass in every single song, every single show, and do my best to represent. Who knows what would've happen if I will had release my song around the peak of the generation, but I would never find out.
Oportunity is different then working hard, most of us do that. But I don't see anybody trying to get our music on the radio, or in the clubs. All we get it's nags, people who say I going to the show, but don't go. I'm sorry if I offend anybody it's not my intention. I just want to make it clear how hard some of us do work and what we have to do when it comes from our Pockets.

Nothing for nothing, but I know Johnny Budz via email, and met him when he spun at a club here in Connecticut. I spoke to him recently about his old Sunday Night show on KTU. He told me KTU didnt get rid of his show because he played so much new school. He said he only would play 2-4 new songs during the hour

His mixshow was deleted because KTU decided to cut the freestyle and disco shows from 3 hrs to 2 hrs, and there was no room for a mixshow. Of course, that didnt last long, and KTU brought back the 3 hrs to the freestyle and disco show a few months later. THANKFULLY !

So comin straight from the horses mouth, KTU didnt STOP him from playing new freestyle. I give him mad props for goin out on a limb and playin the new shyt. Thats what a real dj is all about. Its good to see him succeeding so well as KTU's #1 mixshow DJ (even though he doesnt play freestyle anymore). At least he's keeping the freestyle sound alive with his SLAMMIN remixes !

James, speak to your prodessesor. He'll tell you ktu was cool with the new freestyle. His email is JohnnyBudzKTU@aol.com. He always answers my emails quickly

Forgot 1 thing....I asked Johnny Budz why he wasnt nominated for a A.I.R Mixshow DJ award. This was his email response:

Well I was a part of that awards show last year. Any DJ can be a part of it. All you have to do is nominate yourself! The committee or station doesnt nominate you. The DJ nominates himself. Just look at the nominee's this year. The biggest mixshow DJ's in NYC from the 4-5 stations that have mixers aren't even on the ballot. Its not a very credible award, which is why I choose not to nominate myself this year, and not be bothered with it. But thanks for your opinion and interest !

Thanks for your insight John.

I've known Johnny Budz for many years now, when he was DJ'ing freestyle mixes on KTU, posting his playlist on this very website and getting the same sort of responses from people like I am getting right now. I was once on the other side of this argument...."Hey Johnny Budz why do you always play this, or why don't you play that...you should play this song and not that song...I love freestyle and I know what people would want to hear"...and no matter what his answer was, whether it be me or someone else complaining to him about the way he did things or the way KTU did things- he was always wrong. LOL.

Now I know what it feels like to be on the other end of it.

You know what John, what Johnny Budz didn't tell you...One of the VERY first things he told me when I told him I would be doing sunday nights was "well..don't go too crazy with the playlist- stick to the classics...remember- everybody loves coro "where are you tonight", but they could give a shit about whatever his 4th or 5th single was".

And thank you for your insight on the AIR Awards. I attended the ceremony last night, and it was a wonderful event filled with everyone in the radio industry, and paid tribute to Jim Ryan and Dan Ingram, two radio legends, with two special tributes by Lionel Richie and Cyndi Lauper. The entries are submitted to a panel of judges- this year radio industry people in Pittsburgh and Houston who reviewed the entries. These people judge who gets nominated. There were over 350 entries this year, a new record. I have no idea how many mixshow DJ's submitted mixes, but 6 were nominated. Therefore, if 12 mixshow DJ's entered, 6 were not nominated.

I'm not sure whether your intention was to belittle the fact that I had written that I was nominated. But thank you.

James Anthony,.. I understand exactly what you mean,. I have many friends whom claim to be freestyle fans and truthfully I call them mainstream fans only because all they now is Sping Love - Scares of Love - Change on Me - Highways of Love - The Question - One More Try ,.. and a few other's like that that got mad airplay time. I have so much club music that it's crazy and alot of it is old that really never got a lot of play in my area so they never even heard of it,.. till I've played it for them so they be asking me is that new and i'm like no it's not but if you were really a freestyle fan like you claim to be you would know this. So keep doing what your doing for the sake of the general mass audience. I'm sure you'll find the space and time to throw in the new stuff as well for the rest of us. Keep up the good work.

As I stated, it's all been done before...They tried it in 2002 for a good six months...The results were the entire hour getting cut out of Judy's show, which should indicate to you how it went over to the listening audience

Judy announces my email address on the air every week for listeners to email me with request....If I get 50 emails a week, I can guarantee you that 98% of the email requests I get are for old school song...About half of those are for songs like "Spring Love" and "Dreamboy Dreamgirl" and the other half are for more underground old school songs that I already play from time to time...Like I said before, half of the 18 songs I play in an hour are songs you won't hear anywhere else on NY radio. I do what I can and that's it.

Freestyle will sufer if radio stations doesnt play the music, and it was you who said that new freestyle music "suck's". I said that if you put out good music then the fans will come, as I have noticed ,most of the people on this board are in the music business, I am saying as a Original Freestyle fan that today's stuff does not measure up, now granted during that time freestyle was the hottest it's ever been, it seemed like every where you turned there was another hit!!! I am not going to buy a CD if I have not heard any songs of that CD full length, I and most fans (99%) will buy our cd's when we might hear a good song by an Artist on the Radio, whether NEW or OLD, so it's unfortunate but you need the Radio stations, so fans like me can decide for our selves whats good and not good!

"Freestyle will suffer if radio stations don't play the music"? You are speaking from an old school perspective 'cause the only ones who will suffer is the old school artists, producers, labels, etc. Like I said before and I get tired of saying already, new school has been around for over a decade without the support of mainstream radio. New school artists and concerts gets no advertisement, no promotions, etc. And speaking of these 99% who you call fans, they are not hardcore fans, like the ones who look all around to find those rare hard to find old school and new school tracks (you know who you are). I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of those mass audience listeners think freestyle still died back in 1992. One more thing, I said new school music sucks? Then what do you call it when you say "put out good music and fans will come"? What's not good about new school music? Be specific.

I hear that Krystal. It was so phat back then when DJ Paradise, Hightech, Mickey, Tim Spinnin', Diamond Boy, etc was part of the freestyle flashback on Latinomix. Even though that mix show probably lasted a year it was just great to see how new school got the same respect as old school. And yeah sure it didn't last long but HEY it still brings back the best of memories. And I do listen to DJ Paradise from time to time, the man really knows how to mix and edit.

I second that!!! DJP plays the new and the old but what stands out about this fabulous DJ is HIS RESPECT FOR THE MUSIC!!! His knowledge and continued support of the Freestyle genre and the way he introduces us to new music.. I would have NEVER known about Wolfsheim if it wasn't for him! LOL..

I got MAD RESPECT and ADMIRATION for the man!

James,

I'm sure Johnny Budz got the same slack from the freestyle new schoolers. But he always played 1,2,3....sometimes 4 NEW SCHOOL tracks in his mixshows. Is it really hurting your show by throwing 1 or 2 new school jams in the 1 hr set? Johnny Budz did it for years, and contrary to what people on here say, it WASNT the reason he stopped doin the sunday show. Believe me, I still have all his Sunday shows recorded on tape, he always played new tracks, especially a great jam -- Elissa "Back to me"!

No, i wasnt trying to belittle that you nominated yourself for an award. I just wanted to state that I found out it wasnt something you were nominated by from your peers. You simply nominated yourself, and making a big deal that you were "nominated" for a NYC award. Either way, I wish you luck and hope u win the award
