Its Kool That Ya Play Freestyle, But The Same Sheit Every Week Is Wack. Play New Stuff. Get Nu Image, Pain, Bernardo, Manny, Latin Nation, Marre...artist That Ppl Rarely Know About On Rotation.

Unfortunately, when dealing with a mass audience as we do on Sunday nights at KTU (Arbitron- 5.3/ 25-54 Fall '04), understand that a good 98% of the audience listening are "casual" listeners- casual meaning they like freestyle, they know all the basic songs, but don't really know (or care to know) anything outside of that bracket. Playing stuff like you mentioned above would not appeal to this mass audience, who are interested in hearing the songs they grew up with and that are still standards on the radio and in the clubs. To put it simple, they would turn it off. As much as us hardcore listeners might deny that and say "but its good freestyle, if you played it, they would like it". But its just not the way it works...It's been attempted before in years past to incorporate a new school element to the Sunday night show, and the result was the entire hour being cut from Judy's show altogether. I am not willing to go down that path again. I care too much about this show to risk that.

I have 300+ songs that I utilize in my mixes on a week to week basis and I can safely assure you that more than HALF of these songs are not standard radio hits like "Silent Morning" and "Change On Me". Look at the playlist again...tell me which radio stations you hear "Sweetheart" and "Come Back To Me" and "Games Of Love"? Of the 18 songs listed below, half of them are "radio hits" and the other half are not. I never play the same songs within a 4 week span, so you'll never hear "the same songs every week".

Please understand that as a DJ and as a radio station on a whole, you have to service your listening core and what they dictate. And that is what I am doing, and have been doing for the past two years. The rating dictate that we are doing the right thing.

Also...to give myself a little bit of credit, I am the ONLY DJ in the country right now playing the brand new Lisette Melendez/Cynthia duet "I Can't Change Your Mind". I broke the record and I'm proud to say so. I took off from playing it this week as to not overexpose it too soon while it's being signed to a label.

Hope that explains things from my perspective a little bit

What your saying is a cop out..........i bet if you asked all those people who listen to your show if they wanna hear the same old stale freestyle songs or if they wanna hear new stuff i bet they call in and say they prefer the new stuff. why dont you try it, get people to call in. trust me.......all us freestyle fans who have grown up listening to freestyle already have ALL the old songs you play on SO many compilations we want and prefer new stuff (if we want to hear these songs we dont have to hear them on the radio we have then in our BRAINS from YEARS of hearing them....and if we wanna hear them again we will bust out our bad boy joe mix cd, or our tim spinnin schommer cd and can hear them.....why dont you pose that question and let callers call in.........see what the public really wants..............

on a more OVERALL musical note...........if you asked the same question on the morning show at ktu and asked do you want to hear the same 20 songs over and over again i bet youd get the majority of people say PLAY new stuff give it a shot so we can see if we like it.

dont all you out here on this site agree with me

As I stated, it's all been done before...They tried it in 2002 for a good six months...The results were the entire hour getting cut out of Judy's show, which should indicate to you how it went over to the listening audience

Judy announces my email address on the air every week for listeners to email me with request....If I get 50 emails a week, I can guarantee you that 98% of the email requests I get are for old school song...About half of those are for songs like "Spring Love" and "Dreamboy Dreamgirl" and the other half are for more underground old school songs that I already play from time to time...Like I said before, half of the 18 songs I play in an hour are songs you won't hear anywhere else on NY radio. I do what I can and that's it.

Not a cop out!!!!!

Most people here are to young to know about freestyle from the 80's, unlike me who danced to it in the clubs of NY and NJ, I agree that there should be new stuff but dont stray to far the original style....sure the kids in their 20's now like yur stuff but you mite want to keep people like me (39) yrs old the true Freestyle generation happy to it only means more record sales

Keeping every body happy will not only make you happy but make a biger impact with Freestyle by having 2 genrations listening to it and making it just as popular or more than the 80's

I THINK THAT WE ALSO HAVE TO UNDERSTAND THAT JAMES HAS TO GO BY CERTAIN GUIDLINES, THERE ARE ALOT OF POLITICS INVOLVED IN RADIO PROBABLY NOW MORE THAN EVER, AND HE ALSO I THINK WOULD HAVE TO ABIDE TO KTU'S STANDARDS. THOUGH I FEEL HE COULD BE PLAYING MORE UNDERGROUND / RARE TRACKS, WERE LUCKY TO HEAR THE ONES THAT HES PLAYING DUE TO THE WAY EVERYTHING IS. ALL OF THE CHOICES MIGHT NOT BE ALL UP TO JAMES. AND AS FAR AS PLAYING SOME NEW TRACKS THAT ARE OUT THERE, TO ME WITH THE EXCEPTION OF A FEW MOST ARE NOT EVEN WORTH PLAYING. BTW, IN MY OPINION MAINSTREAM RADIO IS A FORM OF BRAINWASHING.

BIG PROPS going out to James and Judy for doing what they do each week. Its a BLAST to hear the show!!
Most of us realize that KTU is doing what it does best. I am thankfull for having KTU and the Free For All Show.

Blah Blah Blah

someone at radio needs to stand up and take a chance on some new music, im not even saying freestyle
but dance music in general

thats the only way we can get rid of all the rap crap on the radio and get some dance music hot again

i have one more thing to add, im just so sick of turning on the radio and all i hear it let me go to the candy shop and put my STICK in you and let you lick me and all this crap about bitches and hoes and drugs

what is this music industry coming to
why is all the CRAP thrown at us
i wanna hear songs about love and lost love

In my opinion, James Anthony claims he has 300+ songs, but I bet he has no new school tracks and even if he does he doesn't have a huge new school collection nor does he know very little about the new school generation. I think the guy is just old school all the way. And as for James claiming to play the non-classic tracks from time to time, how about then playing some songs like:

1. Noel - "City Streets"
2. Coro - "Promise You My Love"
3. Nasty Boyz - "Beating Of My Heart"
4. Spanish Fly - "Precious"
5. Nice & Wild - "Infatuation"
6. Johnny O - "Like A Stranger"
7. Daize - "You & Me"
8. Joey Kid - "Everything I Own"
9. Luis Damon - "Should Have Never Let You"
10. Tony Moran - "Shed Another Tear"
11. George Lamond - "Cry For Love"
12. Sebastian - "Everynight"
13. Marc Anthony - "Time"
14. TPE - "Forever And A Day"
15. TKA - "The Way It Used To Be"
16. Body & Style - "Untouchable"
17. Christian Castro - "Got The Love"
18. Linear - "Don't You Come Crying"
19. Timmy T - "What Will I Do?"
20. Soave - "Don't Look Back"

Once you play 5 or more songs like these, then I'll start listening to your show 'cause those are some REAL old school non-classics

Also I seriously have to agree with Utimix2003 and Freestylefinest on this one. Because correction me if I'm wrong but I recall James saying he could care less because his 1 hour mix show gets 2.2 mil or more listeners.

Maybe it's about time we look to another station like MIX 102.7 to give new school a real chance.

btw, I like that new cyn/lis track but I don't think it's all THAT. Just because you play a song no one else has doesn't mean much. I bet there a tons of people who have old school and new school tracks that you don't have or wouldn't know where to look for.

And don't forget James, you can always be replaced by another DJ who would give new school a real chance.

I hate to discredit your claims, because of those 20 songs you've listed...numbers 3,5,6,7,8,9,11,12,19 and 20 are all songs that have been featured in my mixes in the last couple of months, with "cry for love", "every night" and "dont look back" all being songs I've played within the past 6 weeks.

Good luck finding new school on Mix 102.7...or even any old school that wasn't a pop crossover song.

Like I said, if you are dissatisfied with the music, then don't listen. There is much truth to the old saying "you just can't please everybody all of the time"! I've already made it quite clear the reasoning behind why I play what I play, and the results thus far have been nothing short of wonderful.

I must give thanks to my listeners- on behalf of my NY A.I.R Awards nomination for 2005 Best Mixshow DJ on NY Radio! Hopefully Wednesday I will walk away with the award! But if not, it's just nice to even be recognized.

Enjoy the music

I think you are doing a great job James, be sure that i am maybe .001% of the millions that listen to you but none the less, just keep doing what you're doing because of you were doing a shitty job you would not be nominated for an award:yeey
