😱 The Cover Girls or The Other Girls?

To those unaware, for the past five years, La’ Entertainment has become one of the most active artist booking agencies in the Freestyle/Dance market. Covering the entire country as well as Canada and Mexico. Our artists roster is vast, handling the talents of such greats as Lil’ Suzy, Lisa Lisa, Doug E. Fresh, Lissette Melendez, Angel (The Original Cover Girl) and many many others, (please log on to: www.La-Entertainment.com for a look at our complete roster). Among our management roster are two primary artist, Lil’ Suzy and Angel (The Original Cover Girl). This post is to try to briefly clarify any misconceptions the Freestyle/dance market might have about Angel and The Cover Girls. First and foremost it is very important that I make this statement “Angel, The Original Cover Girl, has always, is now, and will always perform. For as long as she likes and as long as she is still accepted by her fans, she will work. Since joining the La’Entertainment family in September of 2002, Angel’s hard work along with that of our staff has this year alone booked her 47 performances, 20% of them being repeat business. To enlighten you a bit on Angel’s role in the establishment of The Cover Girls. Angel is the “Original Voice and Face” of such treasures as “Because Of You”, Inside Outside”, My Heart Skips A Beat”, Promise Me”, We Can’t Go Wrong”, All That Glitters Isn’t Gold” and of course The Cover Girl anthem itself “Show Me”. Probably the most distinctive voice in the market, people have often referred to her as “THE Cover Girl”. Disagreements with past management has over and over sent Angel on her own, continuing to make a living perform the music she worked so hard to record and promote. Upon signing with La’ Entertainment, a meeting with past management who claims to “have the rights to the name Cover Girls. (Note: this is just a claim, and since a trade market search is really expensive, no one cares enough to check if the said claimant truly has the rights to this name. I wonder what Cover Girl Magazine and Cover Girl Make-Up feels about this?) Anyhow, La’ Entertainment and past management failed to agree on anything and both parties went their own way. Angel continued to work under various billings such as; Angel, The Original Cover Girl, Angel Formerly of The Cover Girls, Angel, Former Lead Singer Of The Cover Girls, Angel’s Tribute To The Cove Girls etc. Unfortunately past management would do everything possible to keep Angel performing regardless of the title used (note; The law says as long as it is a fact, it can be stated.) A few promoters fell to the threat of false lawsuit by past management, the majority didn’t care and even laughed at the situation. La’ Entertainment does everything they can to clarify and educate their promoters on the business. Past management had no other choice but to throw together another three girls and promote them as the Cover Girls. This was an unfortunate due to the fact that the only one to truly suffer from all of this would be Angel herself. Even though her performance schedule was kept busy, it still hurt her to find out that three strangers were benefiting from her years of hard work and loyalty to her fans. These girls have been known to perform by lip-syncing over Angel’s original vocals, where are the morals? The main reason for this post is to clarify the fact that when the group The Cover Girls are said to be performing somewhere, please be advised that it will not include Angel. Many promotional campaigns around the country have been spotted using Angel’s photo to promote Cover Girl shows. One promoter told us that he had to use her picture or else no one would attend. If anyone is unsure of a performance regarding Angel and The Cover Girls please feel free to call us direct at 718-893-7179, we would be more than glad to tell you whether it is an Angel Show or a Cover Girl show. New promoters might question as to whether or not Angel alone would pull a draw, or are the fans just interested in paying to see three girls sing kareoke on stage. We would truly appreciate your response to this matter. This is very important and affecting someone who we have all grown to love and respect, Angel.
On behalf of Angel, The Original Cover Girl and La’ Entertainment, We Thank You. God Bless.

ANGEL or THE OTHER GIRLS?
We Want To Know!

"New promoters might question as to whether or not Angel alone would pull a draw, or are the fans just interested in paying to see three girls sing kareoke on stage."

@ those promoters -- please... :rolleyes

Granted, it was billed as Angel And The Cover Girls, but IIRC her appearance here in Rochester a few years ago drew a full house plus! :cool

(Still waiting/hoping for a return visit...)

Any true fan of Freestyle/dance knows that Angel is the star and voice of The Cover Girls! Her face is what you think of when you want to see the Cover Girls. The cover Girls is set to perform in Salinas wihout Angel, I wont even bother to watch their performance!I felt the same way with Seduction(without idalis nd the original lead). It would give me a chance to buy or talk to other artists.Believe me the salinas show should book Angel(Clivilles)of the Cover Girls, rather than the cheap knock off that gonna perform.

Latif-

You are telling me nothing new. I know that when they mention a performance by the Cover Girls, Angel C. is not going to be the one on stage singing those songs. And I have posted threads in the past regarding this issue and I feel that these "new" girls should NOT be singing ANY of Angel's songs where she is the lead vocalist in that particular song.

It's almost become a circus act. Karaoke- not necessarily, because the new girls actually do sing.

It's FALSE advertisement and it's not fair to Angel or the ORIGINAL girls to have some other chicks sing these songs.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Promote the damn show the way it should be!

IE., Tonight- Performing on stage: The all-new Pajama Party, The all-new Covergirls, The all-new Debbie Deb, the all-new Giggles and The all-new Seduction! Please note- these are not the original members!

Now, when you see that- it really takes away from all the excitement and genuity . I, personally, wouldn't go to the show.

Latif-

And another thing, it's up to you and Angel to take care of any "holes" and "dents" from a legal perspective. I think it's up to you two to make sure her name and photo aren't being used in a false manner.

And, I truly hope that YOU and Angel are staying true to the fans by not putting her face and name on a "flyer" or "billboard" just to make a few bucks on the side from the other promoters or from the owner of the "Cover Girls" name.

Oh, like this is news.......

This is the reason that dance music gets no respect from the music community.

When bands like Van Halen, Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and others have member chagnes, there is an introduction of the new member, and you can hear a change in the music/vocals.

When a member of a dance group changes, the new member is just dropped into the line up, and lip-synchs over the original members vocals. Perfect example, my faves, Sweet Sensation. Mari is on the original debut album cover, and when she left, the cover was reshot with Sheila's image, and none of her vocals.

On the flip side, you don't see members of rock bands leaving a band, and billing themselves as "so & so from the famous rock band" trying to make a living. In my opinion (and only my opinion) Angel needs to record and promote her own material. She gave up the right to utilize songs by "The Cover Girls" when she chose to leave "The Cover Girls".

I actually said in the chat last night, that all the girls in the Cover Girls could reform with two new backing girls, and we'd have about 10 sets of "Cover Girls" doing shows all around the country.

First of all, much respect to JackG and "CF"...

for allowing this topic to be discussed freely and unedited. Sal B. is a contributor to Clubfreestyle, yet also has worked for "Fever" and could be caught in the middle of this mess. Sal, you know many of us, and I hope that this doesn't cost you a lot of grief, but fans have a right to know the facts and make educated decisions...if you were going to see a Yankees game, you wouldn't want to see the triple A Columbus Jacks...when Sammy Sosa busted his toe and then became Corky Domincano and got suspended, Chicago didn't exactly jump for joy in anticipation of the Cubs "new" right fielder...Troy O'Leary...anyhow...

Latif; Nice novel...

There really should be no question the Angel (Clivilles) Sabater is generally recognized as the lead singer of the Cover Girls. Using the name "Cover Girls" as an example, who was on the magazine covers, CD covers, album covers, pluggers, posters, videos, etc.?

When you listen to the vocal work, who stands out? 15 or so years ago, who do you remember on stage performing the songs?

The "Cover Girls" may have been a concept (Spice Girls, Menudo come to mind), but who was the ONE?

The "Other Girls" are mopre or less victims who are taking advantage of an opportunity. You can't blame them, but you also can't credit them for the gold records, either. Evelyn Escobedo was A lead singer for the Cover Girls, but not THE lead singer of the Original Cover Girls. If Evelyn performed only songs that she was an original artist on, the show would be over before I finish this post.

Remember when Kayel "left" TKA in order to perform as K7? Those same issues arose when promoters booked the "A Klan", but promoted them as "TKA"...not a good idea considering that even after Aby left TKA, Kayel was considered THE lead singer for TKA.

It's okay to promote the "Other Girls" as Latif has called them, but please don't try and convince fans (and potential customers) that they are the original product.

I remember going to Coconuts and purchasing a value priced collection of hits...can you imagine my rage when I got home and popped in the CD deck-only to discover that I was the proud owner of the latest "Countdown Dancers" collection?

Let's see...maybe we can find Joey Kid, Kenny and Eddie-call them Loose Touch and have them perform George Lamond material!

Hmm....what if we not renew Lil Suzy's contract, hire another teenager...I know a girl named Johanna perhaps, put the word "Lil" in front of her name and release a cut all about taking one in one's arms?

Even better...since Sylvestre Stallone in such an overpriced actor, let's use his brother Frank for half-price and use him for the new Rocky or Rambo movie!

Finally, why don't we just create regional performers to cover the country and perform as LIME? This way they could be everywhere-all the time?

The limitations are limitless...

Playing Devil's Advocate here.....

So are you sayngthat because Evelyn Escobedo was not the original singer for the Cover Girls, she's not a "Cover Girl" and has no right to sing past Cover Girls songs?

Sorry......not buying it.

Somehow, when Sammy Hagar took over for David Lee Roth in Van Halen, I don't believe that Sammy was told he wasn't a real member of Van Halen, and couldn't sing any songs that David sang. The group didn't change their name, they stayed Van Halen, and Sammy sang the songs that were originally voiced by David.

David then went on to a solo career, with his own material.

I stand by my statement before. Angel needs to record her own material, and she gave up the right to perform "Cover Girls" songs when she decided to leave "the Cover Girls"

Chuck;

You make a good point. Plenty of artists perform "covers" of songs made popular by others. At issue (at least here in Chicago) was the fact that the venue bringing in the Cover Girls has advertised the group with pictures of Angel, Caroline and Margo...none of whom will be actually appearing at the club.

Angel has recorded her own material...and she performs the material made popular while she was a member of the Cover Girls. Maybe the topic of discussion should question the ethics of promoters and club owners. If you go to a performance expecting and not receiving...

...now if the van Halen brothers broke up the band...

It sounds like a legal issue to me, and I am not a lawyer.

I can see how both sides would fight this.

Angel and her management should be able to sue the clubs for misrepresentation, if her image and voice are used without her consent, and she is not receiving payment.

However, I don't know the specifics of the contract Angel signed when she became a "Cover Girl". If that contract states that her previous management has the right to use her image and voice as they see fit, I don't know what can be done about that.

I think the basic point Latif is trying to make is that when the "Cover Girls" are booked for a show, don't use promo pics of the group from 87 when Angel was in it. That's what is the misleading issue for the fans. Can't the new girls afford some new glossy's?

As far as singing songs that aren't yours, well there should be a clear acknowledgement on the singers part like "this came out before I was officially a member but I'm gonna try to do it justice" or something like that. ANyone can sing the songs, just respect the architect. The reason the new singers know where to go high and where to go low. where to carry a note and where to end a harmony is because of the way Angel did it first. I think that's all that's being asked for as far as respect and acknowledgement.

Chuck, I have to disagree as far as Angel not having the right to sing the Cover Girls songs. By that ideology of "she left the group so she lost the right", is that saying that if Beyonce left Destiny's Child she couldn't sing those songs? Since Busta Rhymes left Leaders Of The New School, he can't perform those songs? Since Gioia is not a memeber of Expose, she can't perform those songs? I think all of them have the right to perform what they are known for. Just give the proper credit where it's due. I just think your statemnet was invalid thats all. Put down the machete please! lol.

Nice thought Kazzeo, but that won't happen. When Michelle replaced LaToya and LaTavia in Destiny's Child, and they won an award, Michelle didn't mention at the podium that she wasn't the orignial singer of that track that won, she just said "Thanks" into the microphone after Kelly and Beyonce` gave their speeches. If a high profile group like Destiny's Child won't give credit, why would any freestyle group go through that?

DJ Kazzeo, you've been on the boards and in the chats long enough to know there is no machete in my hand, and I don't rip people apart or disrespect them.

However, I feel my opinion is right. “Because Of You”, Inside Outside”, My Heart Skips A Beat”, Promise Me”, We Can’t Go Wrong”, "All That Glitters Isn’t Gold”, “Show Me” are not Angel Clivilles songs, they are "Cover Girls" songs. If there is another "Cover Girl" performing with background signers as The Cover Girls, that means the entity is still up and working, and if Angel wanted to perform these songs, she should not have left the group.

If her voice and image are being used ilegally without her consent, then as I stated above, she should seek legal representation and take action to stop it.

Anyone who is a true fan knows that the new Cover Girls are not the original Cover Girls! The promoters know who and what kind of show they are getting upon hiring these acts. They simply don't care, and do you know why?!?! The new show is a better show! The girls have actually taken the time to really sing LIVE, and if you have gone to a show you can hear the difference, and the dancing is amazing. I have been to Angel shows and they are dissapointing!!!! I was amazed to see her performing with a purse on her shoulder as if she ran out from her office job and jumped on stage. She sould have more respect for her fans by looking at this as an art and not a money maker!!!!! If you look at the Cover Girl bio you can see that they never claimed to be the originals. In fact it says "The faces and names have changed during the past 15 years, but the concept of beauty, talent, and great music has always remained. Now, the legendary three some have been re-born with a fresh new look."
The New Girls are all of this. I saw them at the KTU show and they were FAB!!! Even the Daily News thinks so!! Check out the archives titled "It Barely Beat Radio" dated on 8-19-03 in the entertainment section. Fans are not dumb. They pay to see a good show not some half fast performance! I would personally be happier putting money in the pockets of a group who put a little effort into my enjoyment than someone who seems jaded and over it, and just needs the work!!Quote: "Action Speaks Louder Than Words" -The Cover Girls
The smear campaign is pretty LAME!!!!!:crap

Angel's lead voice is on just about all the classic Cover Girls song. It's her voice that makes those songs. From a fan's perspective, they are Angel's song.Regardless, of who has the legal rights. If the new girls are better dancers then maybe they should stick to dancing.Angel's voice is unique and can't be substituted.

NO ARTIST CAN CLAIM A SONG AS THEIR OWN UNLESS THEY WROTE IT, FROM BEGINNING TO END.

AND I HIGHLY DOUBT THAT ANGEL OR THE OTHER 30 GIRLS WROTE THE LYRICS THEMSELVES.

SO LET'S GIVE CREDIT, AS WELL AS THE LAST WORD, TO THE PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY WROTE THE LYRICS TO THE SONGS.

ANYONE CAN LEND A VOICE. BUT NOT EVERYONE CAN WRITE A HIT.

If Angel left the Cover Girls to pursue a solo career then let her sing her solo hits. You can't have your cake and eat it too! Angel did not write those songs, therefore does not own the masters or publishing! This is the way it has been done for years. This certainly is not a new battle and should not be taken out on the new girls. By the way, the lead singer of the new group Evelyn, replaced Angel years ago and was her only replacement. She is not a new face.:blah

Anyone can lend a voice to a song but the song becomes a hit with the right vocalist. It takes a singer's unique touch to make a song work.Don't give me Kareoke and then call it a group.
