Ok I wanted to get some feedback I mean some honest to God feedback from everyone. I was reading another thread and I found some of the things said interesting it was on weather or not listeners would stop tuneing into a station if they dropped playing Freestyle and it got me thinking. Now CF has been around for a minute giving a voice to fans and artist alike as an outlet to those who want to support as well a those who want to let here music b heard and known. Not everyone always agrees but in the end the site does its job, fans come let artist know what they think artist take in the feedback weather positive or negtive and run with it. Here in NY Freestyle is played no where nere as much as any other Genre, it has no major labels backing it no Puffys or Jay Z financing anyones projects its usually an artist hard earned money paying for the cost of studio time production and promotion is usually nothing more then word of mouth and sites such as CF and fans trying to hep get FS back into mais stream play so its basically when it comes down to getting any kind of air play there at the mercy of the radio stations such as KTU. Now me I will heep it real I dont listen to the radio much and I have never been an avid listener of KTU I use to turn in every so often but I dont listen to the radio they play the same songs in the same rotation this goes for every station. Now I see all the praise stations such as KTU get for playing FS and how they keep it alive and I asked mself are they really more often hen not its the same artist getting play over an over and when and if new artist gets play it isnt on reg rotation or during peak hours now I could be wrong since I dont listen but it has always been standard procedure for new unknown and unreleased music to get played on the late night or early morning when its avid listners arent listening. So when people say support the staion I really dont get it when it doesnt really support its artist. I realized this when I found out ths particular station holds one of the biggest summer events Beatstock and doesnt pay the Freestyle acts that perform which is if you ask me the actual attendee getters, granted its usually the same artist every year (another reason why I dont attend) but these acts dont get paid shit for this event, why do they do it so that in turn they can hopeful and NEVER guaranteed get some air play and what happens they pocket all this money cause ya know the show brings in one of the largest crowds and the acts that you and me support get not a single profit from the show, so they get screwed there and then even further screwed when there music gets no air play. So I see like this artist need to make money in order to afford studo time etc etc so that theycan make these albums pass them along to these stations so that you and me can hear what they have done but if they aint geting paid for these shows how is that suppose to happen. I know a lot of people will say well why dont they demand to get paid or not do the show and sometimes its the artist themselves not all but some who f**k it up for the rest and rather then sticking together they cut throat an are like fuk it Iwill do it for free ya aint got to pay my ass for shit sowhen the new artist as well as thosealready trying to make a stand come through they dont get paid either. I know a lot of artis start out doing shows for free to get themselves ot there but there are veteren arist out there that dont get paid or artist who further make it harder by taking smaller pay outs so when the next artist comes along its expected that they to take lesser money or not do shows and come on they got to make there living but if they stuck together they wouldnt get jerked like that because FS plays in the shadows and not on main stream. Ok ok let me stop talking and now ask you who should we be supporting the stations that dont even pay the artist that bring in the profit for them, the artist that dont support each other ad take money outthe next artist mouth. There are a lot of artist not getting a fair shot coming up now because of these actions. So holla caue i want to know whatya really really think. 🙂

Artist Have The OPTION of performing or not performing. Its there decision. Head Liners get paid, thats a Fact. As a artist who is starting off or not getting the attention as a more sucsessful artist, its perfectly naterual to do a gig for free. Its exsposing your music to potential fans. Getting exsposure in other parts of the USA can benifit in the long run. Gaining new fans in new states and citys. I once heard that Stevie B Toured the US for 2 years B4 "In My Eyes" went GOLD. I doubt he was getting paid each show (This was back in the 80's)

As For Radio Playing Freestyle..Its always a plus having freestyle on the radio. If enough of it gets played , it can fall upon new ears and create a new fan / fans. The future of freestyle Music Is the Fans. They will be the ones Releasing future albums until Freestyle becomes what it once was.

I admit Playing the same artist on the radio for 20 years may have played a major roll in the decline on Freestyles popularity...But Stations Like KTU are trying to make a differnce. Many Small differences make a HUGE difference Feel me? So any shape or form of support and help is needed.

Sincearly,
Freestyle FAN / New Freestyle artist

The freestyle movement has long been over...I've been around a long time and worked at various record labels and HOT 103 when it was a dance station. We all had great times and in the beginning artists...I'm not going to mention any names made tons of money doing 3 to 4 shows a night. Freestyle will never be what it used to be. All the key players have moved on and either retired or changed gears in music. In response to Angie's original post....girl you know as well as me that when these parties are put together (Your KTU Beatstock's, Sal's Fever Parties, etc) it's like a family reunion for all of us who have been in the game for years to get together for one night and remenisce of what once was.... If we all think that the freestyle movment is on the rise again, then you all have missed the boat years ago.....I'mma keep it real...most of the new shit that I'm hearing is madd weak, the productions suck, and creativity is lacking.....Going to these events year after year is doing nothing for the music of freestyle. KTU will play what they want to play and HIP HOP will continue to be a multi billion dollar industry......hollllaaaaaaa :bangbang

Well If More Freestyle Lovers would Concentrate on The Present and Future as Much as they do with the Past, Freestyle would be Fine. Look at Your Entire Post...Its all In Past Tence. Your Speaking Of Your Freestyle Era, Not Ours. The Freestyle Movement You speak Of , That has "Long Been Over" and Has come And Gone. Those Days are Gone. That Freestyle Is Gone. Ours Is Just Beginning. Its Just a Part Of Life, It happens In all aspects. Why Should Freestyle Be any Different?

I dont Know whats Harder , Getting It through Clear Channel and Mainstream or Getting It through Freestyle It self. Is the New School Supposed To Just Stop and Give Up because Of whats Happened In the Past? Its Called Revelution.

well if freestyle had millionaires backing it like hip hop did and still does, it would be a different story. some one needs to give ktu 50 grand 2 play their freestyle song and put it on a reg rotation! if u force feed the public they will start feeling it! i know it took me a while to like hip hop. it's sad but true we need someone with alot of money to get the ball rolling again.

Sexy Angel, You hit some valid points .

I totally agree with Smooth Rythym on this One..... But doesnt stop me from trying. Ive expanded an have recently licensed my Music overseas as in the states I get no support @ the retail level and no radio support at all.

For Example Its weird Clear Channel has me listed under their new Muisic Artist Spotlight, but then again I get no radio play or mix show play at all.

Well Ill just keep working at it.

i think that freestlye fans are in many ways their own worst enemys. if we all demanded that freestyle stayed on a regular rotation on our local radio stations not just here in NY but all over we wouldn't be having this conversation right now,. when KTU used to play freestlye all the time when people like Lisa Lisa, Cynthia, George Lamond, Corina and so on were just getting started didn't they have advertisers? so what would be different today if freestyle stayed on a regular rotation? would the advertisers suddenly pull their ads? i don't think so. if you go to a wedding reception and the dj plays rap, house, reggea, and freestlye i bet you everyone start jumping up to dance as soon as they hear the freestyle. even the old people get up and shake a tail to the music. KTU calls them selves "the beat of NY" but they are just playing the same dance/house/pop songs as they all play. sunday night at 9pm is when they can really call themselves "the beat of NY". i don't feel "lucky" that KTU is still playing some freestyle because to me thats not good enough. we have the legends of freestyle who should be coming out with new stuff and the new artist who can't ever get a chance to blow up because their stuff may only be played during the judy show. that is if they are lucky. im not trying to bash KTU but its people who say things like we should be lucky they still play freestyle at all the cause of why freestyle people.artist, producers are where they are today. yes if we have a puffy or a fat joe backing us up we can make some real noise with $ but since we don't why not do the next best thing like write letters, make phone calls, be in the faces of the power that be to make a change? if that don't work stop tuning in all together. look at reggeaton how the hell did that blow up the way it did? the answer is simple... fans of the music never let it die and were proactive in making it heard. they craved more of it and in the end it became what it is today. for those people that say freestlye would never be what it was i just think that an attitude like that is what caused the problem in the first place. instead of being so negative why don't you try to do what you can to make good freestlye music and get the radio stations to play it? we are the general pubic so why don't we have a voice? i don't know i have a lot of passion for the music since i grew up with it, sang it, wrote it, perfomed it my self. i guess its in my blood and for that i can never just except that freestlye is dead. i don't want to sound like a broken record but we all could make a difference in what is played if we all stood together. thats what living in a free world is all about. the government can't control what we listen to. we are in control.

If you really wanna keep it real ... let's not forget that back in the old school era, the majority of old schools artists were nothing but voices. They lack the skill to manage themselves alone not to mention they even lack the skill to write or produce any of their own material. Unlike old school artists, at least new school artists actually get their hands dirty and take TOTAL part in their productions.

Very well said. I've been listening to Reggaeton since it's was latin rap and Vico C, Dj Negro, Ledesma, Brewley MC, Kid Power Posse, among others rip the stages with no backing. It's amazing how reggaeton got where it is today. And it's all about not giving up, Same goes for hip-hop, I didn't know until about 2-3 years ago that Puff Daddy used to be LL Cool J's Road manager. Now thats some shit.
I've been doing freestyle for years, as well as for Willie Valentin & Michael Anthony (All-In), Legit (FFWD), Artie, Nu Image (Latin Image), and me as (Reflextions) among others; we starte as for as 87-88. I started performing in 89 and club scene was unbeliveable. And yet they treat us with no respect like new comers. Radio stations was giving what other stations weren't. Some will add a few freestyle here & there, but they took the chance with Freestyle and ran with it. But since Hot 97 step down from Playing Freestyle it was like a Hault to our music. Once they stop, alot of others stations stop as well. Radio has the biggest hand in the industry. We need a radio station like La Kalle 105.9 who will say "I'm tired of being a follower and try something New"! Which they did, and they have grown min weeks, why cause there was no stations taking that big step of supporting Reggaeton. And they had the B@lls to do it. Just like Hot 97 Had the B@lls to change from a Dance station to a HipHop/R&B station.
We need a Radio station will be like these 2 stations and take the chance and push our music.
Money is the Devils hand so of course if you don't have that you ain't jack. Money talks bullshit walks.
Thats how I feel and many of the young heads had came up to me after a show and will say, "Great Job, I love the song. What kind of music is it?" I would say freestyle and the first thing that comes out of their mouth will be "That isn't Hip-Hop".
The Young will accept us if we cater them, just like Caleb said. Until then I will keep performing until I can't no more. Why? because I love this music and have taught me so much!
Smooth I know how you feel papi, but if you don't have the love for it then who those?
With all my love and respect to the Old and New
Much love
sincerely
Alex

well why did everyone stop?? why take it off the air?? because all of the sudden everyone with a casio keyboard and a fischer price microphone was making "music": the level of quality dropped off drastically and freestyle died a slow painful death..and everyone then and today still dont get it..alot of freestyle is actually horrible!!!! this coming from me a hardcore fan..but im a realist to.."disgusting" but we settle.. a new artist a new song a remake drops and free style fans are dancing in the street awaiting the "second coming" despite the fact that the song SUCKS!!!!
ill support freestyle and the artist if the artist stop whining and complaining that the dark evil "industry" is holding them back to cover up the fact that the music they make is mediocre at best!! ill finish this later as im late for work.........

How about the fans that don't support freestyle?

How many fans download the music instead of buying it?

How many fans don't go to the shows? I've gone to plenty where "everyone" says they are going, but they don't show up.

When KTU has been giving the spotlight to new artists, how many actually called KTU to tell them them wanted to hear the song again?

What do the following 3 have in common?

1. Freestyle
2. Disco
3. Hair Bands

.... I rest my case....Move On

The differnce is Urban Stations that Play Hip Hop and RnB dont play metal or disco..yet they do play freestyle...The differnce is you have thosends of people who would buy new freestyle if they knew whare and how..(Not every one is a Internet Junkie)....Disco and Metal dont have a Huge Import following like freestyle doese...Can we please stop focusing on the 80's for 1 minute? Thats why freestyle is dead. What you know about foam partys , E partys , Import Parts...all playing Trance, Breakz, and umm yeah MODERN Freestyle...It Just need exposure....and New Artist That Have Bomb Shit..PERIOD...Just cause a new artist come out with a CD , that dont mean its gonna make it.PRODUCTION NEED TO PROGRESS. SOUND LIKE ITS FROM TODAY. The Old school wont like it...But pleasing them VS pleasing Today is the difference of Getting back on the radio........Prime example Angelina,Buffy, Jocelyn, Spanish Fly, S-Factor, all On Bilboard in the Late 90's ...notice a sound change? See a Pattern..PROGRESSION. RADIO PLAY. Give new Freestyle to New eyes and ears...and its a new thang. New Sound, Look at Crunk..(slowed down Freestyle or Trance Breakz) we knew what it was....But the kids didnt and Bladow!! FOCUS on FREESTYLE of tODAY and TOMORROW if you want this music to last...I love old school frestyle....But 20 years of shelf time and radio was enough...and that why freestyle is what it is..PERIOD. How Many Years Can you Play the old shit til Clear Channel gives it the boot? and Gues what? ITS Being Played on todays Hottest stations...Freestyle is not like disco and Metal....By the way Disco and Metal is dope.

As for some freestyle fans downloading songs ..Well I think its becuase most of the new stuff isnt worth paying for in all honestly,,,Why are the fans going to boost up sales that sound wack and therefore the artist will create more crap..I know when I hear something from a sample and if its good I will deff buy the album..I know I am guitly of downloading here and there and that is my reason..I aint rich and I would so feel stupid to spend my money on some wack cd I could have done some compra with lmao.nah I am kidding.

Now for supporting the shows I mean its plain and simple why no one goes..The mics never work the artist never show up the events are not organized ..I mean if you from the area I am sure you wouldnt mind but if your going to travel why put up with that ..I mean some travel but its because they have met some peeps through the boards and chill out ..I know even if I did live in the area I am not sure I would go with all the Bs fans go through to be in a hot ass club waiting hours till performance then shit be all messed up when it comes to performances.I give props to those who do go despite all that .Thats hardcore for real .. ..People still blame the fans and industry ....I dont get it,....Freestyle will never be what it once was ...Just accept it and quit pointing the blame...

I love freestyle but I accepted that its not going to be what it once was ..

I gove props to Nuimage and Licyn now those are some tracks I look forward to hearing..Its artist like you who do what it takes to do for your fans hard work and dedication..I never see cynthia whining or blaming she keeps doing what she loves regardless..

Ive never seen any artist on CF whining or complaining...And If your refering to me "FIGHTING THE POWER" You got me all wrong. My post are motivational pep talk for those who still beleive in Freestyle and Love FREESTYLE. Its for the open minded who except change and condone any thing to make this music come back..OLD GRUMPY MEN and WOMAN can Go Kick Rocks. New school is here to stay and thers many more to come. Soon New School will run freestyle and thangs will be the way it should be...ALIVE.
