Now we all knows there all kind of freestyle music like euro, canadian, etc, ... but I'm just wondering whether or not freestyle music overall is considered to be latin music? Here in the states a BIG majority of the old school performers back in the day were latino and even today a big majority of the new school performers are latino as well. Even a lot of the producers, managers, etc, behind the scenes were latino. Although this topic was most likely brought up before and there were or will be arguments between latinos and non-latinos on this, not to mention this will probably lead into doing more research on the roots of freestyle music. I'm just curious to see what people's opinions are on this subject.

FREESTYLE was initially called LATIN HIP HOP, so I don't see why not.

Roots.... It came from the Blacks and was nourished by the Latinos. It was then funded by the Jews & Italians. There was an opportunity for many aspiring youth to sing songs in English with the hopes of crossing over. Anything else you want to know? Today, it encompasses groups from all corners of the globe. Freestyle is an International Music not exclusive to any particular ethnic group.
 
I wasn't talking about international or globe wise ... just here in the states. Obviously Canadian, europe, etc, have their own freestyle cults, but my question was whether or not freestyle is considered officially to be another form of Latin music here in the states.


btw, are you speaking as a latino or non-latino?

There you go. Now that's the history I was about to talk about.
If anyone who grew up like me back in the 80s listened to people like Afrika Bambatta's "Planet Rock", or Planet Patrol's "Play At Your Own Risk", you know the roots of freestyle. Freestyle even dates back to the late 70s early 80s when Lyme was out (they used synthetic, electronic music for their sound).

The only reason why some of the freestyle music you hear today sounds "latin" is because some of the beats in some of the songs came from the latin culture. If you listen to that song "Your The One My Heart Beats For" or Nancy Martinez's "For Tonight", you will hear indications of the latin beats incorporated into their songs.

Other than that, Freestyle originated in NYC from the urban scene, when youths were still breakdancing.
 
it was considered Latin based, but just like everything surrounding freestyle there is controversy with who brought it out first..LOL freestyle has the most drama I swear!..lmaoo!

Not exactly, some people who grew up in the Bronx just like I did know where it originated from. I was an 80s child (and damn proud of it lol), but ask anyone who grew up as a teenager in the 80s and they will tell you straight up where it originated.
 
But then you have the West Coast Freestyle and the East Coast Freestyle (and any other freestyle beyond that bla bla bla).

This doesn't relate to music (in a way it does but), for instance the way they dance salsa in Los Angeles (Dance On 1) is not the way we dance salsa in New York City (Dance On 2).

So nowadays, Freestyle has many different sounds, and that depends on what city you come from. Canadian Freestyle may sound different from NYC freestyle, etc etc.

So Freestyle has its origins, but now has different sounds because of geography.
 
it was called Latin Hip Hop in the 80's but it was Dance Music before that label "Latin Hip Hop" and then "Freestyle".. Shannon's "Let The Music Play" is Dance as she is not latin like so many other artist (Joyce Sims, Nocera, just to name a few).. I don't know where and how it changed from Dance to latin Hip Hop to freestyle.. So I wouldn't consider it 'Latin Music" but more like Dance Music.

lol ... all I wanted to know was whether or not freestyle here in the states and in the public eye is officially considered to be Latin music, not a history lesson. Even a old timer like me (23) knows about this stuff. But then again I think that was my mistake for using the term "roots", so my bad ...

But hey at least you answered my question.
 
To me it's latin...everything else just doesn't sound like the real freestyle!
 
Let's keep this shit real.Freestyle was originally called Latin Hip Hop simply because it is Latin dominated genre.It always was and it will always be.Not only that but the music is a cross between Latin/dance music.It was music created by 2nd and 3rd generation LATINOS.ALL others were simply IMMITATORS.

Name me the top freestyle acts and the OVERWHELMING majority are Latino Not too mention the producers and independent records companies.See I never buy into that silly notion that it was funded by Jews or Italians becuase if you looked into it, most of the major music companies are owned by Jews.So does that make rock or hip hop jewish???

Rickiemorena, I said what I said because I like how Nighttrayn spoke about the silly notion of how Freestyle was funded by Jews and Italians. He was being 100% real. Not to mention he got straight to the point on Freestyle being latin music.

And history lessons are nice and all ... but all you talked about was freestyle's origins (in detail) and nothing else.
