freestyle is a melting pot.

It is the result of a lot of different cultures coming together.

Latino, Black, Italian, Gay.........all had a hand in freestyle.

That's the political correct thing to say and its very "kumbayaish".And yes there are freestyle singers that come from all nationalities and sexual preferences( though almost all are closet queens)but not all play an equal hand in the creation of this sound.

I Personally Dont Think So Shannon And Cover Girls Were Not Latin Hip Hop...They Were Mostly Leaning Toward A Dance Type..So In My Opinion I Dont Think So

fREESTYLE IN 2005 AND fREESTYLE IN 1985 is 2 diff things. It deff. started off as a latin form of Hip Hop..but Today in 2005??? Its latin, phillipino, Asain, German, Canadian...times done changed brutha....in the late 90's we had more phillipino freestyle artist then Latin artist , well at least in Cali...

I agree with Nightrayn-Latino's do dominate the genre and it has alot of latin elements to it.Freestyle is more american Latin type, since it is sung in english and has grown into a melting pot.I do loke seeing more Latino's singing & producing Freestyle, I like seeing & hearing American Latinos I relate to.Freestyle is just American dance music, created by a big majority of Latinos, that has grown into all races who love it, sing it, etc...

IN my neck of the woods,.. well no woods but in my area yeah we consider it latin music,. but thats just here,.. don't know about every where else.

ALL others were simply IMMITATORS.
^^^^^^^^

Metropolitan Records, a Non-Latino organized label, were hardly a bunch of immitators. I call those who cannot put the sweat into producing a unique track by defaulting to Planet Rock as a base to be immitators rather than innovators. Latino or Not.

Name me the top freestyle acts and the OVERWHELMING majority are Latino Not too mention the producers and independent records companies.See I never buy into that silly notion that it was funded by Jews or Italians becuase if you looked into it, most of the major music companies are owned by Jews.So does that make rock or hip hop jewish???
^^^^^

No, but when it came down to 'funding' these ventures a large chunk of the $resources$ involved were found 'outside' the Latin fold and in the case of HipHop the Black fold. Never bite the hand which feeds you. This is all I have to say about this subject matter.

Gay.

Tony Moran, and proud.

who gives a shit, it's music plain and simple let's not analize it to shreds and end up trearing it up like we do with everything else associated with Freestyle. I could care less if jews, or italians funded the damn thing, the bottom line is that the LATINOS took it to where it went. The Majority of the top sellers of Freestyle were or are LAtiinos, nothign agaisn't any other race that has come into the mix, everyone has held it down, and can claim a part of it, In the end, it's only music, no turf, no race, no color or creed, just plain ole good vibing music.

Now we all knows there all kind of freestyle music like euro, canadian, etc, ... but I'm just wondering whether or not freestyle music overall is considered to be latin music? Here in the states a BIG majority of the old school performers back in the day were latino and even today a big majority of the new school performers are latino as well. Even a lot of the producers, managers, etc, behind the scenes were latino. Although this topic was most likely brought up before and there were or will be arguments between latinos and non-latinos on this, not to mention this will probably lead into doing more research on the roots of freestyle music. I'm just curious to see what people's opinions are on this subject.

I for one think freestyle music is latin music

I'm no latino but when the question comes up, "what type of music do you like?" and I throw out freestyle there is always this dumb look and they ask what it is. I say it is dance music that was at it's most popular during the mid 80' to early 90's. I find it easy to say dance music performed by mostly latinos.

The really cool thing is I can play just about anything from the 80's and 90's and the kids today love it. When I tell them that in some cases it's older than they are they can't believe it.

Not exactly, some people who grew up in the Bronx just like I did know where it originated from. I was an 80s child (and damn proud of it lol), but ask anyone who grew up as a teenager in the 80s and they will tell you straight up where it originated.

I was a teen in the 80's and grew up in Fort Lauderdale/Miami where the "HOT" and "Dance" stations jammed Expose, Shannon, The Cover Girls, Trinere, Stevie B, tolga, TKA, etc. etc.

I miss south florida and the 80's... Big hair... parachute pants suede puma's, miami vice...

Now I live and work in the Washington D.C. suburbs and want to get up out of here and move to NYC. I was born upstate but I want to take my career in the IT field to NYC and work as a consultant or for a bank.
