Honestly, I just bought two of the Bad boy Joes freestyle megamixes, I liked them for the most part, but I listenend to both a couple of times because there are songs that I liked on them, but there were songs that should never have been on those CD's or radio for that matter. So when the record executives here the quality of music that comes out of freestyle land , it's probablty waste of time to them. You have to have quality in the music, vocals etc etc. That's what I think the downfall of freestyle was, too many band songs that should never have made it to the radio. That gave freestyle a bad taste in the mouth for non-freestyle fans. Sorry if that offends anybody.

This just goes to show that there's diff'rent strokes 4 diff'rent folks....I would like to hear the cf peeps' opinions on what exactly constitutes a good freestyle song...I agree with skoza about the fact that some, well a lot of freestyle songs out there that I have listened to, and it made me want to sue the singer for noise pollution, LOL!!! But seriously, back to the original question: What makes a freestyle song good? Is it the beats? The voice singing the song? Or how about relating to it? I'll throw down some examples: In my opinion, I don't think Soave is a great singer....but I'll be damned if "Crying Over You" isn't one of the BEST freestyle songs ever!!!...Or how about "Mirage" by India?....If any of you know what in blazes she is saying, then God Bless You, lol, cuz I'm still trying to figure it out...Can't relate to what she's saying, but it's a danceable track. You see what I'm saying? Also, could the formula that brought freestyle into the mainstream work in 2004? What mistakes would have to be avoided? I would like to hear from fans and artists on this.

Actually, I shouldn't say that any of the songs on the new generation were horrible, it's just that some didn't appeal to me, but I'm sure if they came on the radio I would be here all day posting about how exciting it is and how much I can't believe it. But as for right now, I've been stuck on Energy 92.7/101.1 all day and night, and I've been downloading the latest new radio friendly hip hop songs to play in the clubs, but buying any freestyle whether or not it's mainstream, so now I'm confused about if I should continue to call myself a hip hop d.j. Someone once told me that if you try to change your style for anybody other than yourself, you will always come back to be what you were before. I guess that's true because I've never been so stuck on Energy 92.7, never before used to carry any c.d.'s with me when I went out, just listened to the hip hop and r&b station that was available, and never been so mad about stations removing all the dance music - no, ALL THE DANCE ARTISTS - ANY ARTIST WITH A DANCE HIT! I wouldn't mind so much if Energy had a stronger signal, but it doesn't, and I feel more confortable knowing that other people could easily find a (dance music) station and pick it up clearly. The thing about 104.7 KissFM is that I know they are popular, so them removing ALL the dance music and mix shows, it's hurting dance deeply because all people are going to do is think it must no longer be in, stop requesting it, then soon forget about it so the next time they try to argue with me over the phone that nobody requests the songs I request or even less has heard of them, they might be right. Some people might listen to Energy, but it's not one of those stations where people will listen and say "hey they are playing it! it must be a hit" then automatically it's cool and something everybody says is in - but I do have to admit there are quite a few people bangin' house, dance and trance in their cars! Maybe I should start that thing back again when I used to go to a department store and pretend I was trying to test out and pick out a certain stereo just so I can turn my freestyle c.d.('s) up loud and make everyone listen to it. It was kind of funny because I am testing out a stereo, but standing there trying to find certain tracks each time! The last place I did this was radioshack. I also remember back in school when the teacher had a day when we should all bring our favorite song to school, and the people were like "oh no........ shymann did you hear that? everybody get ready for this..." (by the way I ended up playing Jacqui Cenci "memories", and came back four days later after the assignment was done because I wanted to play another song. .... I think I should just start a new post and forum strictly dedicated to all those things I did though school, work,....etc. - just to get freestyle heard. Some people might find it very comical.) And now that I think back to those days, I really must have had no shame... I'm surprised I played Jacqui Cenci because when I think back to those times, my favorite songs that year were "in a dream" (carnival radio edit) by Jossette, and "can't get you out of my mind" (extended freestyle mix) by Lil Suzy,.... (I was originally planning on playing "when I hear the laughter" by Stephanie Fastro, but didn't.) I should stop here because if I don't, I could go on forever and I'm not staying up to 8:30 a.m. again. Everybody I know should know not to get into a discussion about music with me - especially if it's in the dance category

I don't know why, but for some reason I always run into freestyle vinyl records when I go to the store. I don't know if it's because I subconciously look for it, or if it's just that the forces are with me and there is some magnetic activity between me and those records occuring in this universe, but ever since 1999, when I ran into Michelle Diaz "I wont cry for you" record, 2000 when I discovered Adriana before it came out (and the store owner said he never expected to receive and wasn't planning to sell any record like that in his store, it just happened to come in shortly before I went to that store......... and I bought it even though it wasn't to be put on the sales floor). And just recently, I ran into a lot of "I Can see" by S.F. Spanish Fly vynil records along with other records by S.F. Spanish Fly and Angelina, one by Energy "take me higher", and one with both Angelina and S.F. Spanish Fly. I went to one of my old friends' house to record some vynil to c.d., and I discovered a lot of records he didn't even know he had. He was like "damn! I never knew I had that record.... it's sounding kind of good in here too...." while my other friend was like "that's right! you go Shymann - that's all you right there! that's all you right there. I know all that music is you..." and he went on about how he wished he could find and have all the records I have, asking, how do I find all that stuff......on c.d.? (Yes I'm a c.d. d.j., don't get confused because I did say I run into freestyle vinyls, but I spin with c.d.'s, and by the way - I run into freestyle c.d.'s very often also...................in Arizona!) Maybe it's just that after years of experience I've become a pro at selecting and finding things that have freestyle/breakbeats on it - even if nothing is said on the cover to indicate it.

All those years of buying the wrong thing by mistake really paid off. To get better at something, you must practice and mess up a lot to reach your goal, and my goal was to be able to walk in a music store, and know exactly what to buy (in the freestyle/breakbeat genre) with the least information possible about the c.d. I went from spending hours in the store analyzing the c.d. to just walking in and out no longer than 5 minutes. For Example, the new single by DND f/ ANGIE IRONS "ex ex girlfriend", I had no idea what it was, but out of every single in Tower Records, I picked that one up and bought it. How did I know? simply because it said "DND" - which for me, means something. (It was just about 2 years ago I was looking for a certain version of "gotta get thru this" by Daniel Beddingfield and came accross 2 import compilations with that song, but each c.d. had a different version. I bought the wrong one by mistake for over $32.00 at Virgin Records and made an agreement with the store over the phone to be able to exchange it. I got the DND version which was the one I wanted, so now DND is one of the new things on my list to look for when selecting a certain c.d......) I also saw Mis-teeq at Tower Records, Mis-Teeq is known for having 2step songs and remixes, but when I got to the sales desk I came to the conclusion that I should not purchase it, but should go home and find a place to listen to it online first, so I put it on hold. I ended up being glad that I did not purchase it. Another example is this: when I bought the ROC PROJECT f/ TINA NOVAK, "deja vu (it's hard to believe", I had no idea what it was, but I saw the name JOHNNY BUDZ and purchased it. I've been mixing it and playing it ever since with no regrets. But don't think this record selecting all comes easy, there are times when you have to go by very little or no obvious meaningful info, and I'm pretty sure I've missed probably one or two freestyle/breakbeat singles because it wasn't evident - I'm not a perfectionist, but surely I did eventually get those songs through other means.... for instance, a compilation a few weeks, or even months later on.

I dont think freestyle is dead I think it has evolved. Listen to a lot of the new dance music and you will hear "freestyle" in it. Breatbeat mixes are doing very well now. Of course I like the old flavor and still throw those classics on. Disco never really died that evolved into "dance music" In the world of dance there are to many sub genres. Trance, house , techno , breakbeat and then the break down again. Right now there is a ton of tracks that have vocals which is going to help this genre get back on the airwaves across the country. Dance music is evolving and we need to embrace it

THE QUESTION... Is Freestyle DEAD?

Lets see...

I go to the record shop, look for new Freestyle 12" or CDs and I find...ZERO, nothing, NADA!!!!!

so in math: record store + no new freestyle music = DEAD Genre!

Sory but true!

ATTENTION ALL PEOPLE:

there are only 5 true dance radio stations in the country, which I heard from a program director - or shall I say the new future program director that will eventually take over Energy 92.7/101.1 Arizona's Dance Radio....

For more info on this, there is a new forum thread that will be open for you to type and read.

I must also add that dnace isn't the only music that is evolving, if you listen to hip hop now, you will see that it also has evolved, but it's not as easy for you to keep the same name for freestyle as it is with hip hop. Why? because as freestyle, disco, or dance evolves, it kind of sounds different. As hip hop evolves, there is always one thing in common, rapping is always in it so it's still easy to recognize it. I remember when I thought it was all going to go towards the new futuristic Timbaland and Neptunes sound, but now I notice that some of that is now being played in the old school mixes and it didn't even go too far in that direction. This is why Missy Elliot, Timbaland, and Outkast still kind of stick out. I don't know why everybody didn't continue to follow that futuristic sound like "I can't stand the rain" by Missy Elliot and "up jumps the boogie" by Timbaland, and the beats of Aaliyah's songs - it would have sounded much better but it seems as if the evolving of hip hop is going more towards even more simple beats - beats that you don't even have to be creative to make. A lot of the new songs - half of them I don't even know much about yet, are all going the same direction with the same sound, and a lot of urban stations are mixing all those songs back to back so it kind of has a trance effect, nonstop same beat with different rhythm. I One other thing is that I notice if they would speed up those beats a little, it would become freestyle, so why can't they do that? Why can't Outkast make a freestyle song? P!NK? I don't know what to say about her - who knows what she will do next. Madonna sounds like she wants to make freestyle songs, but I also have noticed that her new stuff is not being played as much as her old stuff - at least here in Arizona this is true. Only one station plays it, and that's Energy 92.7/101.1 Arizona's Dance Radio.

_After all, I should not complain because I am lucky to be in one of those 5 cities accross the U.S. that have an all dance music station - and must I add that at least the one we have doesn't play r&b songs like "I don't wanna know" by Mario Winans and stuff like that! I believe that there are stations for songs like that and if I want to hear that song, I can go to that station to hear it. I believe in general that if there is a station for country, alternative, oldies, latin, christian, etc., then there should be a station for dance! Just like the r&b would go with the hip hop and the alternative would go with the rock and the light rock would go with the easy listening, the freestyle/breaks will go with the dance, then the top 40 station should be the choice for people that want to hear the top songs out of each genre.
