Many producers have asked what is the best way to get a good sounding record? One of the key ingredients is the mix. You could have the busiest produced track, but if the mix is not there then the record will sound terrible. The key to getting a good mix is referencing. What I mean is that you should take a cd that is already on the market, with the sound quality that you like, and reference it with your mix; ie: is your bass as pronounced as theirs, are your highs cutting threw like theirs, are your vocals to far back, are your levels on par? One of the best engineers that My brother and I feel is a good reference is TOMMY UZZO. He has done most of the T.K.A. songs, George Lamond songs, most of Tony Morans mixes, and a host of others. His mixes are a good starting point. Now I am not saying that you will get that exact sound, but if you use one of his mix as a reference you will be able to get somewhere in the ball park ( or parkinglot. LOL) The MIX is the most important aspect of what makes a good freestyle record. Now Tommy, I believe does all his mixes on an SSL with total recall. Unless you have a million dollars, dont expect to get the exact quality. But there is a poor mans solution. Yamaha's Pro mix 01! It has total recall, and this will allow you to record a mix and go back and adjust parts of the mix later. Listen to your mix on as many different speakers as possilble. Take notes and return to your mix and make the adjustments. This will definitely give you a better mix. You can pick one up used for about $600 to 750 on ebay or at your local equipment store. Or you can get the new one for about $1100. This is by no means the only thing you will need, but it will give you a good start and help you take your mixes to the next level. Until my next post peace out.
