How do you tell a friend who sings without hurting their feelings that they need vocal coaching or training. Some take it as envy and some as jealousy not as you trying to help them or coming from another singer that's what they will think. Somebody mean can tell them and really hurt them. Believe me, there are many of us out there in this spot that can't find a way to tell them. When I started to pursue my career singing professionally, I had someone tell me to take vocal coaching because it would help me and they also mentioned that Gloria Estefan, Celine Dion and may artists today still do it. I did my research and it is true. Well I took the advice and people who knew me from before who saw me perform would only say WOW!!! Ever since then I am being called to so many events to sing I am overwhelmed. Every week I am performing. Now how does one tell someone with out hurting them or for them taking it the wrong way?
Wow I remember recording my first demo, I let a producer hear it and he told me , Tony you need to work on your vocals. He said my door is always open , but you have to be ready, and your not ready vocally.
I then asked him to pinpoint what he thought was lacking vocally.
He explained the problems and I went on to practice vocally on my own and later took vocal classes.
8 months later I was walking downtown in my home town and he was stopped at a traffic light . He yelled out Tony G.
He asked me if had recorded a track yet, and I replied yes.
He said a friend of he's showed him a track the other day and he was really feeling the song. His friend told him this is Tony G. and he could not believe it was me so he had to ask me himself.
The track was called "TEARS IN MY EYE'S" and he wanted to know if he could produce a track for me.
We worked on a track and later worked on a few projects together.
I thanked him for his advice, it was some of the best honest advice I have ever received.
I always thought, that if I wanted to become any where in this business I would have to focus on what ever it would take to make it.
I once heard a phase when I was just starting out and it was .
"we are looking for 90% looks and 10% talent".
Well I beleive it should be 90% talent, because I did'nt fall in love with music because of how good someone looked I fell in love with music because of what it made me feel when hearing a particular song.
I was told to lose weight at one time or it would hurt any chances I had of making it in this business, well I have this to say is I have yet to step on a stage and have the crowd say lose weight and we will like you music more .
People like what they like plain and simple, and if the quality of your music is top notch , thats what the fans really want great music.
what good is it if I look like a hunk but sound like an out of tune record.
When was the last time someone saw a me on the radio? never
now I ask when was the last time you heard me on the radio , because the song is being requested? last Friday.
My point is this never let anything stop your dream and if you have the skills and need to tooned them up JUST DO IT you will love yourself for doing so trust me.
Great post thread Victor.
