How do you tell a friend who sings without hurting their feelings that they need vocal coaching or training. Some take it as envy and some as jealousy not as you trying to help them or coming from another singer that's what they will think. Somebody mean can tell them and really hurt them. Believe me, there are many of us out there in this spot that can't find a way to tell them. When I started to pursue my career singing professionally, I had someone tell me to take vocal coaching because it would help me and they also mentioned that Gloria Estefan, Celine Dion and may artists today still do it. I did my research and it is true. Well I took the advice and people who knew me from before who saw me perform would only say WOW!!! Ever since then I am being called to so many events to sing I am overwhelmed. Every week I am performing. Now how does one tell someone with out hurting them or for them taking it the wrong way?

Wow I remember recording my first demo, I let a producer hear it and he told me , Tony you need to work on your vocals. He said my door is always open , but you have to be ready, and your not ready vocally.
I then asked him to pinpoint what he thought was lacking vocally.
He explained the problems and I went on to practice vocally on my own and later took vocal classes.
8 months later I was walking downtown in my home town and he was stopped at a traffic light . He yelled out Tony G.
He asked me if had recorded a track yet, and I replied yes.
He said a friend of he's showed him a track the other day and he was really feeling the song. His friend told him this is Tony G. and he could not believe it was me so he had to ask me himself.
The track was called "TEARS IN MY EYE'S" and he wanted to know if he could produce a track for me.
We worked on a track and later worked on a few projects together.
I thanked him for his advice, it was some of the best honest advice I have ever received.
I always thought, that if I wanted to become any where in this business I would have to focus on what ever it would take to make it.

I once heard a phase when I was just starting out and it was .
"we are looking for 90% looks and 10% talent".
Well I beleive it should be 90% talent, because I did'nt fall in love with music because of how good someone looked I fell in love with music because of what it made me feel when hearing a particular song.

I was told to lose weight at one time or it would hurt any chances I had of making it in this business, well I have this to say is I have yet to step on a stage and have the crowd say lose weight and we will like you music more .
People like what they like plain and simple, and if the quality of your music is top notch , thats what the fans really want great music.
what good is it if I look like a hunk but sound like an out of tune record.
When was the last time someone saw a me on the radio? never
now I ask when was the last time you heard me on the radio , because the song is being requested? last Friday.
My point is this never let anything stop your dream and if you have the skills and need to tooned them up JUST DO IT you will love yourself for doing so trust me.

Great post thread Victor.

I think Music is a Beautiful Gift that the *Man up Above has allowed us to have in our lives. However, there's only one "Style" of it that I'll continue to be IN LOVE with for the rest of my life. 🙂

HOW YOU LOOK SHOULD NEVER TAKE PART IN HOW YOU PERFORM BUT SADLY A LOT OF THE TIMES IT DOES. TO ME LISTEING TO AN ARTIST BEFORE SEEING HIM IS WHAT I FALL IN LOVE WITH, ITS THE VOICE THE TALENT THE PASSION BRUNG OUT IN SONG, HOW THE ARTIST LOOKS TO ME DOES NOT MATTER WHY SHOULD I BASE AN ARTIST ON THERE LOOKS RAHTER THEN ON THERE VOCAL TALENT. THERE ARE SO MANY ARTIST OUT THERE THAT JUST BRING THE MUSIC ALIVE AND HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HOW THEY LOOK. IF YOU HAVE A DREAM FOLLOW IT EXCEPT CRITICIZM BECAUSE IT WILL ONLY ENHANCE WHAT YOU ALREADY HAVE. THERE ARE PLENTY OF ARTIST OUT THERE THAT ARE NOT AS TALENTED AS SO MANY AND ARE OUT THERE DOING THERE THING BECAUSE OF THERE LOOKS BUT TALENT SHOULD ALWAYS BE #1 NO MATTER WHAT. IF I WAS TOLD THAT VOCALLY I NEEDED SOME WORK HEY YOU KNOW WHAT I WILL TAKE THAT ADVICE. PERSONALLY I AM ALWAYS LOOKING FOR WAYS TO IMPROVE MYSELF IN EVERY ASPECT OF MY LIFE TO THE POINT WHERE I WIL TELL MYSELF ANG ITS NOT GOOD ENOUGH EVEN WHEN THOSE AROUND ME WELL DIFFER ITS MY MOTIVATION TO WANT TO THINGS AS BEST AS I CAN. MY POINT BEING WHAT EVER YOUR DREAM BE WEATHER IT BE IN SONG ETC ETC DONT EVER LET ANYONE TELL YOU YOU CANT DO IT IF A PERSON GIVES YOU HONEST CRITISISM TAKE IT FOR WHAT IT IS AND CHOOSE WHAT YOU DO WITH IT THEN 🙂

:hugs 2 sexyangel:

Thanks ma! I enjoy reading You & Tony's thoughts on this Topic. It really has me thinking, and it's just good to see that we're all showing Love and Support to one another. No Matter What! 😉

FO SHO MUSIC IS A BEAUTIFUL THING A GOD GIVEN GIFT TO THOSE ABLE TO SING WITH THERE HEARTS. MUSIC A POWERFUL THING 😀

90% looks & 10% talent is just foul! The looks should never overpower the talent. But think about it, we can sit here and say that it's just wrong but then the people you find attractive on tv are the same people that are products of this type of marketing. I mean women don't get wet over a 300lb. singer sweatin buckets on stage. But they'll damn sure throw their panties at the ripped singer who looks good and can dance like it's nothin! I guess that just clear evidence of how much of a cut-throat business entertainment is. On the flipside, it is kinda hard to market overweight people. These labels are businesses. If they don't make money, they shut down. That's why so many acts are alike today. They're riding with what's safe. I mean you got a guy like Big Pun or B.I.G. where they made it actually work to their benefit, but I think the R&B & pop markets are a less accepting. However, in dance music the focus seems to be blind. Or the spotlight is on the d.j. and the vocals. It's a little messed up but you cant hate on the industry because they're just trying to make a dollar too. They go with what's in demand. People want to see those young, toned singers and dancers, they can see that average 300lb. guy sweatin on a subway anyday.

I see your point , but when I was at a show back in 1992 was the first time I met Marc Anthony.
A promotor in the business told me that he agreed with what was said to me about look's vs talent. This person said that guy you were talking to he sings freestyle/dance music. He said his name is Marc Anthony. He said Marc has incredible vocal talent but he is lacking in the looks department and he is short this is why
he is not a big as TKA, George LaMond, etc. I thought that was such bull , and really turned me off.
I guess people were wrong afterall, he is bigger than ever now, singing english and spanish , and some just did'nt see all he had to offer back in the day.
Aside from a different hairstyle then he had in 1992 and more exspensive clothes he looks the same to me today.
I say he's been pretty marketable,would'nt you.

You can be 300lb's and still look good on stage , 300lb's does not make you a slob,I see people go nut's for Judy Torres when she hit's a stage and i'm sure she has'nt always had it easy, but the fans love her music, and got the chance to know Judy , and love her as a performer aswell.
I feel what your saying about the industry making money with a marketable artist, but let the people chose the music not the industry, thats all.
I totally respect your insight though.

i gotta say that if i saw fat joe on stage doing his thing and then saw my babie nas i am going ot be doing the same oamount of hollering cuz there both very talented brothers in the industry. Maybe its just me but to me its about the talent.. Look at luther vandros aretha franklyn, everyone loves them and it isnt for the looks its because of the talent. It is truly a biotch that looks over power the talnt in gettting out there but I rather have the talent then the looks any day 🙂

Tony, I agree with u 100! I love Kelly Price music, and she has been interviewed on many occassions she talks about Columbia records shelving her and only letting her sing back up (mainly for Mariah Carey) and she continued to write for other artists. She was in the cut six years as a shelf act because they couldn't figure out how to market her. It wasn't until about 4 years ago that Def Jam finally signed her as a solo act and she is AMAZING!
Same situation with Faith Evans took place before she released her sophomore lp on the down low. Puff Daddy wanted a new image for her with the new album. They got to a point where he was going to drop her from Bad Boy Entertainment. This all over her weight. She got a lawyer and was set to pull out of contract and record exclusively for Arista (which is Bad Boy's distributor). When Puff Daddy finally realized what he might lose (with most of his other artists broken up, locked up, or deceased) he offered Faith a personal trainer & her own production company to sway her from signing with Arista. Thus a slimmer Faith Evans still records for Bad Boy Entertainment! lol
I agree, it's foul and I love both the artist music. I just meant that I can also see the business aspect from the label side. Everybody just trying to make money. It's all a business.

But when was Marc Anthony ever in the shadow of TKA or George LaMond? Seem like G.L. had a problem with keeping his weight down as back in the day as well. Seem like the bigger u are the better u can sing though!

I love ya sexyangel, and Markluvzcynthia I hear ya.
As for Marc Anthony being in the shadows , it was more like he was not promoted as much as he should have been, thats all.
It seems thats all taken care of now . I know this girl from around my way that told me she never heard or saw Marc Anthony before his salsa days. She also said he is not the cutest guy in the world but hell with that , he is so passionate when he sings a song you fall in love with him anyway. GOD bless your talent Marc Anthony GOD bless.

I already told u man! LOL😛

It is a good topic though. On a more serious tip. Two very understandable views that sort of oppose each other. Talent should definitely be the main factor though. Too many manufactured acts these days. With not an ounce of real talent.

HMMMM MARC ANTHONY IS ONE OF THE MOST TALENTED AND PASSIONATE ARTIST TO EVER BLESS US WITH HIS VOICE. THE MANS VOICE IS BEAUTIFUL I CANT FIND A STONGER WORD THEN THAT AT THE MOMENT LOL PERO WHEN I STARTED HEARING ABOUT ALL THE OTHER WORK HE DID BEHIND THE SCENES AND VARIOUS INTERVIEWS I READ AS HE STARTED BECOMING KNOWN IN THE SPANISH MARKET I WAS SHOCKED TO FIND OUT THAT A MAN WITH SUCH A BEAUTIFUL VOICE WAS WATCHING FROM THE BACK WHEN HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN CENTER STAGE FROM THE BEGINNING. I SAID IT ABOVE AND I WILL SAY IT AGAIN IT IS SAD THAT IT IS MAINLY BASED ON LOOKS RATHER THEN TRUE TALENT BECAUSE I KNOW OF MANY ARTIST I CAN NAME BUT IM BEING NICE TODAY SO I WONT THAT CANT SING FOR CACA BUT BECAUSE THEY LOOK A CERTAIN WAY ARE OUT THERE. I WANT QUALITY BEFORE ANYTHING. LABELS SJOULD LOOK FOR THAT THEN ANYTHING ELSE BUT SADLY THEY DONT IT IS HARD ENOUGH TO PROMOTE AN ARTIST TO GET THERE NAME OUT THERE BECAUSE OF HOW COMPETITIVE THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IS AND HOW SPECIFIC THEY HAVE BECOME ON WHAT AN ARTIST SHOULD LOOK LIKE AND AT TIMES THE ARTIST DONT HAVE PROPER PROMOTING FOR THEM. I THINK IT IS IMPORTANT TO HAVE THE RIGHT EAM OF PEOPLE BEHIND YOU WHO WILL ALWAYS HAVE YOUR BEST INTEREST AT HEART AND BELIEVE IN YOU ENOUGH TO PUSH YOU REGARDLESS OF WHAT THE INDUSTRY SAYS THEY WANT. TRUE TALENT WILL EVENTUALLY SHOW ITSELF 🙂
