Is anyone else out there watching the European Soccer Championships?

The tournament got off to a thrilling start with underdogs Greece pulling off a shock upset over the host team Portugal on Saturday. (I'm sure Sonya is still in mourning stage LOL). The Greek fans in Toronto were partying along the Danforth all night (and Greek fans could use any excuse to party given their teams lack of success historically).

Today, France scored a big comeback victory over England by scoring 2 late goals in the dying minutes after England led 1-0. You may remember France did the same thing to Italy in the final of the last Euro in 2000.

Tomorrow, Italy plays their first match against Norway, with all the Italians in Toronto poised to party (they started the tradition in this city).

The tournament is off to a great start!

YEP, I 'm a soccer fanatic. I played this sport for years.
But I still watching some matches when I find spare time.

Yesterday night, my country has lived scary moments against England. I'm the first to say that this match was boring. But the 10 last minutes were incredible.

Today, Italy will meet Denmark (and not Norway! LOL).

C-ya.

TODAY'S RESULTS (GROUP C):

Italy 0, Denmark 0

After coming into this tournament as a heavy favourite, Italy disappointed in their first match. From my perspective, Italy were clearly the second best team on the pitch on this day. Denmark dominated for long stretches of this match, but thanks to Gianluigi Buffon in goal, Italy managed to escape with a draw.

The knock on Italy in previous tournaments is that they always played too defensive, but leading up to this tournament, Trappattoni allowed his players to play a more positive attacking style (which led to some impressive results in qualifying). However, today they seemed to revert back to the old defensive style for some reason, and it probably cost them the win. Hopefully, Trappattoni learned his lesson today and we'll see a more positive Italy next time.

Sweden 5, Bulgaria 0

The scoreline says it all.

Is Sweden this good? Or is Bulgaria this bad? Somehow, I can't see Sweden scoring 5 against Italy or Denmark, but we'll see.

Sweden is great soccer team, you can bet on this. I saw the match, and they deserve the result! LOL.

I'm also a big fan of Denmark, It's a good team too. Hope this both countries will be qualified.

I won't talk about Italy, I could be hash! LOL Just kidding!

And I hope that France will win against Croatia... 😉

It will be pretty hard to see Portugal win against Spain and to be qualified. But who knows? Everything is possible in soccer! 🙂

Tonite the big match is between Germany and Holland.
Hey Peter, do you believe in the victory of your country???? 😉

I am following still trying to get over the fact Portugal lost to Greece on Saturday :realsad

TODAY'S RESULTS (GROUP D)

Czech Republic 2, Latvia 1

The Czechs managed to survive a scare after falling behind 1-0 in this one. Like most people, I was shocked when Latvia took the lead (against the run of play), but they managed to score 2 second-half goals to salvage the victory. These 3 points become especially significant due to the draw between Germany and Holland.

Germany 1, Holland 1

Ruud Van Nistlerooy saves the day. After Germany took the lead in the first half, they played a very disciplined and controlled game until Van Nistlerooy scored a spectacular goal with 10 minutes remaining to earn the draw.

Tomorrow, Portugal tries to avoid disaster in a must-win game against Russia and giant-killers Greece try to make Spain their next victims.

THEY WON THEY WON!!!

Russia is the first team to be eliminated from the tournament

WEDNESDAY'S RESULTS (Group A)

Spain 1, Greece 1

Underdogs Greece continued their fairy-tale run by holding heavily favoured Spain to a draw. Both teams are now tied for first in Group A and both have a good chance to advance if they can get at least a draw in their final matches.

Portugal 2, Russia 0

Portugal averted potential disaster by gaining 3 much needed points to stay alive in the competition. Russia becomes the first team officially eliminated. This match contained a controversial talking point when the Russian goalkeeper was sent off for handling the ball outside the box (replays showed he didn't).

OUTLOOK
Portugal can advance if they beat Spain in their last group game, but that will be a tall order. Greece should have no problem advancing against Russia.

That call was wrong but the second goalie that came on seemed to play better than the starter anyways...also in Euro 2000 and World Cup 2002 Portugal had a lot of wrong and bad calls against them it's just a part of the game...Portugal can beat Spain lets see if the motivation holds out till Sunday 🙂
