But it will be hard against Spain. I think it will be an interesting match for the second place of this group. :walk

I agree. I think Portugal will have a much tougher time against Spain.

THURSDAY'S RESULTS (Group B)

England 3, Switzerland 0

England managed to bounce back from their heartbreaking opening loss to France by beating Switzerland 3-0. 18-year-old Wayne Rooney scored twice to lead the English attack, becoming the youngest player ever to score in the European Championships. Surprisingly, Switzerland was the better team for much of the match, but the difference was England was able to finish their chances, while the Swiss could not.

The win revives England's chances of advancing to the next round, while Switzerland looks like they will be hard pressed to make it.

France 2, Croatia 2

This was a see-saw battle that saw the French escape a possible embarrassing upset. After taking the lead in the first half, France looked to be in full control of the match at halftime. But then Croatia scored two quick goals in the second half to take the lead and it looked like a poosible upset in the making. France managed to equalize on a terrible back pass to the goalkeeper by the Croatian defender Igor Tudor that David Trezeguet pounced on and deposited into the empty net. The goal was scored amid some controversy as the ball appeared to hit Trezeguet in the arm but the referee didn't detect it.

OUTLOOK
The shock draw by Croatia combined with the England win makes this group wide open. France should have no trouble advancing against Switzerland, but England will have to be wary of Croatia, which could be a tricky opponent. Basically, whoever wins the these last 2 matches will go through to the quarterfinals.

Tomorrow, Italy will face Sweden without Francesco Totti, who was suspended 3 matches for a spitting incident in Italy's first game.

I didn't see the match last night, but what I've read on newspaper this morning, it's not good! I don't think that it will be easy against Switzerland anymore. I don't know what's goin' on with the French team, but in my opinion they are not playing an exciting soccer.

Yea that was a bad game at the end for Croatia! It was so close! We could've had it, instead gave it away....didn't lose, but in our eyes we could've won!

Francis, the match against Switzerland may not be an easy one for France, but I still think they will win. Remember, France only needs a draw to go through.

FRIDAY'S RESULTS (Group C)

Italy 1, Sweden 1

Italy let this one slip away. I criticized Italy for playing too defensive in their first game, but today they came out flying. The Azzuri played a positive, attacking style and were rewarded with a 1-0 lead at halftime. In the second half, they tried to sit back and defend the lead (and were doing it very effectively) until Sweden scored on a scramble in front of the net with 5 minutes remaining. The draw means Italy has to win their final match in order to have a chance to progress to the next round.

Denmark 2, Bulgaria 0

This was a one-sided affair. Denmark dominated the game from beginning to end and the 2-0 scoreline was flattering to Bulgaria. The Bulgarians played a very uninspired game and seemed to give up in the second half.

The win moves the Danes into a tie with Sweden for first place in the group, setting up a "winner-take-all" match against Sweden next week. The Bulgarians became the second team officially eliminated from the tournament.

OUTLOOK
As mentioned, Denmark and Sweden are now tied for first place in the group, setting up a "winner-take-all" match next week. Italy has to win their final match against Bulgaria in order to entertain any thoughts of advancing.
Interestingly, if Denmark and Sweden draw and Italy wins, there would be a three way tie for first place, and goal-differential would decide who goes through. The 5 goals Sweden scored against Bulgaria now look huge! This could be interesting.

Yep, this is what he scaries me the most...French soccers think more with their brain that with their feet.

And Switzerland haves nothing to loose, on the contrary.

One last thing to say: Guys from the France soccer team...WAKE UP!!! :walk

go greece go finally there playing as a team you never know they might win it all

i dont think greece will win, altho it would be something huh 🙂 danforth will go nuts!

i'm going for spain... but i'm looking how sweden got a sweet chance to take it all

SATURDAY'S RESULTS (Group D)

Germany 0, Latvia 0

One of Germany's main weaknesses in recent years has been their inability to score. Although they continue to produce good midfield and defensive players, Germany hasn't had a consistent top-level striker since Juergen Klinsmann in the early 90's. Today, it showed. Germany played very well against Latvia and managed to produce several good scoring chances, but couldn't convert them. In the end, it was this lack of finish that cost them the win.

Czech Republic 3, Holland 2

The most exciting match of the tournament so far! The Dutch can be a maddeningly inconsistent team, but when they are motivated, they can really play. Both teams played a positive attacking style which resulted in easily the best match of the competition so far. The Czechs came back from an early 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 and win the group, becoming the first team to clinch a spot in the quarterfinals. Despite the loss, Holland still has a chance to go through thanks to the Germany-Latvia draw.

OUTLOOK
Germany can clinch the second spot in the group with a win over the Czechs in their last match (especially if the Czechs choose to dress their reserves for that game). Holland plays Latvia in the other match, where the winner will advance only if Germany doesn't win their game. So basically, Germany are in control of their own destiny.

Tomorrow features the much anticipated showdown between Spain and Portugal. Interestingly, Sonya is cheering for Portugal, while Vicky is cheering for Spain....Hmmmmm.....This should be fun. 😉

So Greece and Portugal make it on from Group A---Russia and Spain are going home

SUNDAY'S RESULTS (Group A)

Portugal 1, Spain 0 (Sonya 1, Vicky 0) 😀

In the history of this tournament, only one host team has ever failed to advance from the group stage (Belgium in 2000). Portugal avoided that potential embarrasment with an inspired 1-0 win over archrivals Spain. As for the Spanish, they have always had a reputation for underachieving in major tournaments and it happened again this year. Once again, the Spaniards failed to live up to expectations, and once again they are making an early exit.

Russia 2, Greece 1

Russia gain a consolation win as they were already eliminated earlier in the competition. Despite the loss, Greece advance to the quarterfinals on the strength of having scored more goals than Spain (they were tied in points and had even goal differentials).

RESULT
Every major tournament produces a Cinderella team, and Greece appears to be wearing the glass slipper this year. As Sonya mentioned, Greece and Portugal, who finish first in the group, advance to the quarterfinals, while Spain and Russia are eliminated.

MONDAY'S RESULTS (Group B)

England 4, Croatia 2

"Rooney-mania" is sweeping across England! 18-year-old Wayne Rooney, who many have pegged as the next great English superstar, scored 2 goals to lead England to a convincing win over Croatia and a spot in the quarterfinals. Our good buddy NuJerz2001 will not be partying tonight as his team, Croatia, are out.
Trueeeeeeeee! 🙁

France 3, Switzerland 1

Francis, I can see why you're worried about this French team. Les Bleus did not look overly impressive tonight, but they did just enough to win (and the result is the most important thing, after all). The Swiss can now look forward to the next Euro in 2008 when they will be co-hosts along with Austria.

RESULT
France finishes atop the group and will play Greece in the quarterfinals. England will face hosts Portugal in what looks to be the most intriguing match of the next round.

Hey Gornicevo, you are absolutely right, they weren't impressive last night..AGAIN! I don't know what's goin' on inside the group (between some players and the coach Jacques Santini) but their soccer wasn't really enthusiastic. I got bored when I was watching the match that I did other things in my appartment! :lol
Against Greece, I already scare about the result! LOL. But I'm a supporter, you know!!! 😉 So, I will be behind them just to support THEM. :rolleyes

Portugal will be playing England next
Greece will be playing France

TUESDAY'S RESULTS

Italy 2, Bulgaria 1
Sweden 2, Denmark 2

...And this is exactly what happened.

Italy scored a late winning goal deep in injury time to earn a dramatic victory. But it was all for naught as the dreaded result that Italy feared between Sweden and Denmark came to pass. The 2-2 tie meant that Sweden and Denmark go through based on tie-breakers over Italy.

Although the paranoid Italian media will try to suggest a conspiracy, the Scandinavian teams both played hard and there was no evidence of a fix. The truth is the Azzuri have no one to blame but themselves for their elimination due to their poor form in the earlier games.

RESULT
Sweden finish first in the group and will take on the second-place team in Group D (Germany, Holland, or Latvia). Denmark finished second and will play the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals. Italy and Bulgaria are out.
