Sugi, I have been very impressed with Denmark. They play a very positive style and are fun to watch. Hmmm....maybe we'll see a repeat of 1992. 😉

WEDNESDAY'S RESULTS (Group D)

Czech Republic 2, Germany 1

One of Germany's main weaknesses in recent years has been their inability to score. Although they continue to produce good midfield and defensive players, Germany hasn't had a consistent top-level striker since Juergen Klinsmann in the early 90's. Today, it showed. Germany played very well against Latvia and managed to produce several good scoring chances, but couldn't convert them. In the end, it was this lack of finish that cost them the win.

^^^
Today you can just substitute "Czech Republic" for "Latvia". LOL

The Czechs fielded their reserve team, and Germany still couldn't win. In a "must-win" game, the Germans were in attack mode for most of the match and created several good scoring chances, but their lack of killer instinct around the net came back to haunt them. All in all, a very disappointing tournament for the Germans (my favourite team). 🙁

Holland 3, Latvia 0

The Dutch can be a maddeningly inconsistent team, but when they are motivated, they can really play.

When the Dutch want to play, they can really put on a show. The Oranje poured on the style today in a one-way match they had to win. It seemed like the entire match was played in Latvia's end as the Dutch ran circles around Latvia. Thanks to Germany's loss, Holland qualifies for the quartrfinals. Now, why can't the Dutch play like this every game?

RESULT
The Czech Republic win the group and will face Denmark in the next round. The Netherlands finish second and will play Sweden.

Yes, maybe...untill further i've crossed my fingers/legs etc. - LOL!!!😉

And you're right, very good style they have....The coach Morten Olsen can be very proud of his team...🙂

Cheers Gornicevo & Francis!!!

Quarterfinal: Portugal vs. England

Portugal 2, England 2
(Portugal wins 6-5 on penalties)

It was a dramatic win for Portugal and a heartbreaking loss for England.

It was a game full of dramatic momentum shifts. The English took an early lead with a goal in the third minute and it appeared like the lead was going to stand, until Portugal scored late in the second half to send the game to Extra-time.

Rui Costa scored a powerful goal to put Portugal ahead and they appeared on the road to victory. But then, in another dramatic shift, England equalized to send the match to a penalty shootout.

The teams were level after 6 shooters, when Darius Vassell's shot was saved by the portuguese keeper Ricardo. In an ironic twist, Ricardo then stepped up to deliver the winning kick.

Portugal move on to the semifinals in a dramatic win, while England are eliminated in a cruel and heartbreaking fashion.

It was sad to see one of these teams go out. I thought England played with great heart and deserved a better fate. But Congratulations to Portugal!

Tomorrow, it's David vs Goliath; the big favourite France vs the underdog Greece.

WHO WOULD HAVE GUESSED RICARDO (the goalie) WOULD SCORE THE WINNER :biggrin
btw did anyone who watched the game notice that the shot Ricardo saved...he had no gloves on??? :confused

MONDAY'S RESULTS (Group B)

England 4, Croatia 2

"Rooney-mania" is sweeping across England! 18-year-old Wayne Rooney, who many have pegged as the next great English superstar, scored 2 goals to lead England to a convincing win over Croatia and a spot in the quarterfinals. Our good buddy NuJerz2001 will not be partying tonight as his team, Croatia, are out.
Trueeeeeeeee! 🙁
U right about that one Peter....tough luck! We had some tough teams to play, France then England....only a miracle would've gotten us through! 🙁

I'm the sadest guy tonite...France lost against Greece. I can't believe it!
Well, honestly, I'm not very surprised by this defeat. "Les bleus" played a very bad soccer since the beginning of this Euro 2004.
See you in 2008.../LOL/ 🙂

Quarterfinal: France vs. Greece

Greece 1, France 0

The party is raging on the Danforth as we speak! Underdogs Greece eliminated the defending champions France in a major upset, relying on an airtight defense and timely counter-attack.

This is becoming a wide open tournament as all the traditional soccer powers have been eliminated. It's time for some new blood to rise to the top.

Francis, you're right about Les Bleus. From the start of the competition, I kept waiting for them to warm up and start picking up speed, but it just seemed like they couldn't get it going. So, this is now 2 straight disappointing tournaments for France. 🙁

The bad thing, the French coach announced his departure of the France's team before the start of the Euro. What a stupid idea!!! And some French journalists said that some of the players argued with him during the competition.
His departure will maybe a good thing, the future will let us know. LOL.
