My heart goes out to Chicago. I've never been to Chicago, nor do I know what it's like to have a full-out dance radio station but I definitely know people that do have such a privelege, and that must be awesome to have when it's there, and must truly suck when it goes.

Out here in Bethlehem, PA, our local pop station used to play stuff from Rockell and Jocelyn Enriquez but no freestyle hits our waves anymore. I feel for ya guys.

I just listened to Energy right now on Sunday, and I didn't know they got bought out. I am glad we are posting now about our views. I emailed the General Manager, but I doubt he would email me back. I have heard about the Julian Jumpin Perez thing too. What is that all about? I guess Money buys somethings doesn't it? B96 is a powerhouse, I bet 103.5 offered him some sweet deal, unless Julian was fed up with B96 and their programming and he has a chance to bring back the mixes to Chicago. Too bad they couldn't recruit Tim Spinnin Schommer. I am sure he would play freestyle all the time.

Roger what is your email address? I am from Chicago suburb too.

Well,I just listen to the last hour of Energy before they went off the air they made it clear that the reason the station was sold was because their parent company ran up too much debt in the 90's and it was time to pay up so they sold off the stations in Chicago as well as LA and NY to the highest bidder. It wasn't because they had low ratings or another company took them over etc.

Their last hour was interesting. They played Rockell,Technotronic DJ Miko and Inner City along with their usual music.

Thanks Ph@atbreaks for updating us on the last hour and what the real reason was. I couldn't stay up that late to listen, even though I woke up around midnight anyway.

gregk, my email address is miamifreestyler87@yahoo.com. I used to live in Chicago and now live in the Quad Cities but am always up there. I remember first hearing Energy 92.7/5 after the first week on the air. What a great station. We were so lucky to not have to listen to hip-hop or the teeny bopper music that was and is out there. Let's hope it won't take too long to get another dance station back in Chicago like it did before Energy started.

Did anyone get to hear what the Top 10 for 2002 was on the station? I missed that. I am thinking Erika's 'Relations' might have been number one but don't really know.

Thanks

GregK-Actually B96 Julian Jumpin Perez contract was done with B96 and b96 did not want to sign him a new one 🙁 I know alot of stations were offering him good offers and decided to go with KISS....
Yeah I think Tim Spinning Shommer is pretty good when it comes to freestyle, I have a few of his CD's! I remember when B96 used to play freestyle on the weekends at night. We need to start calling these stations and start swamping with alot of freestyle requests 😉
Good Luck to Julian Jumpin Perez and hopefully we will hear Freestyle on the KISS FM...:walk

Tim Spinnin' Schommer was the best. I used to love listening every weekend for his mixes. It is strange that Energy was advertising for the new Killer B96 over the weekend but why would listeners switch over the them when you look at their playlist and it is all hip-hop or teeny bopper music. So are they saying they are going to start adding dance music. Because I know there was a reason why listeners were listening to Energy and it sure wasn't for a hip-hop format.
I hope KISS 103.5 will play dance whether Freestyle, Trance, Disco-House I don't care....as long as we don't have to be subjected to that awful hip-hop/teeny bop music.

Dam Skippy..I'm tired of that same ol B96 music thay need to start with some freestyle DANCE!...I hear that they play some freestyle sometimes but they need to play MORE! B96's Flashback party was off the hook they really trew down on that tip they should support Freestyle more.

That really is strange...but in a way kool...they're basically
saying that if you liked what they played, you can listen
to B96 for that type of music? Well, that's what B96 is also
advertising..the flashbacks...(freestyle) if they're calling
it the New Killer Bee Mainly because of Freestyle..then dammit,
they better start playing it alot more..I've heard alot more lately,
than in past years, but they need to be more back to back type
of format with it. I'll hear maybe 3 freestyle songs, on a saturday,
between 5p-10pm...that's not good enough! We need to call em up
ya guyz! We gotta let 'em know we need More! 😉 One flashback show,
aint gonna cut it!!

I plan on emailing them and asking them about the advertisement on Energy and ask them if they are going to play current dance music, whether it be Freestyle, Trance, Disco-House, Breakbeat....anything dance. Hip-hop is not dance to me. I will let you guys know if I get a response back. I usually never do from that station, unfortunately.

I started to listen to 92.7FM this morning going to work. I heard Enrique Eglesias ( however you spell his last name ) and it was in spanish. Then I thought it was a fluke. Then I listened to another song and it was in spanish, so I guess their format is going to be spanish, which is great for them since their FM band reaches pretty far. I don't know how far it goes into Chicago, but it reaches up to Kenosha in Wisconsin. I am still heart broken and I know no matter how much we try and email and call B96, they will be set in their ways. They say they are for the fans and the listeners, but we all know that is B.S. They are a CBS broadcast station and they are in it only for the money. Most of the DJ's get pissed off because they can't play the music they want. They have to adhere to the programming. Does anyone know who replaced Julian at B96?

B96 will never change their ways. They are hip-hop and will continue to do so. I still think it is funny how they want Energy listeners to switch over to them. Like that is going to happen.

I live in Davenport, IA and I was usually able to pick up Energy at night in my car. I thought that was pretty cool. I don't think that they realized that Iowa people were listening to the station also.

Since I don't listen to B96, does anyone know if Tim Schommer still mixes on the weekends on the station? I am assuming that if he does it is hip-hop/bee-bop only.

RoGer-Energy was pretty kool!i'm not sure if Tim still spins on the weekend....I don't think so or it whould've caught my attention already.

gregK-Candi is now on with Tim at nights...so I guess Candi replaced Julian. You check out their website.

I couldnt barley get 927/5 in at all where i live(chicago heights area):crap

i thought they played to musch boring dance music from what i heard while around Aurora(it came in perfect out there) i hardley heard freestyle just Cynthia, Cynthia&Safire, Johhnny O, Rockell, and Expose just like once and that was it. I actually think we got a shot at B96 now. there still playin to much rap but i have been hearing there flashbacks and freestyle. just not new school freestyle though:crap

hey Roger..they still play tim's mixes I've been hearing em Saturday nights at 12:30am. sometimes there freestyle sometimes not. i miss the friday nights all the time so i dont know bout friday. and they replay Tim mixes Thursday nights at 10:30pm.

"Energy" was purchased by Spanish Broadcasting System and they expect to use a "Viva" format (whatever that is). I had sent out some feelers to "Energy", with some proposals to include Freestyle music and interviews, but I was discouraged by someone who had sat in on meetings who told me to forget it. The station was not making money, and they were seen as a small suburban radio outlet, rather than a major market radio station.

Julian's contract at "B96" wasn't renewed-my guess is that they too wanted to save some money as they then teamed Candi Gomez with Tim Schommer and replaced Candi with a relatively low priced overnight personality.

I have spoken to Tim in the past about pushing Freestyle some more-at least on his Sunday show. He told me that he wasn't in control of his playlist. He could squeeze in a song or two on Sunday nights, and he could program some into his mixes, but that was it.

He has been regarded as a Freestyle savior of sorts here in Chicago, but the truth is he hasn't been allowed to expose the music as it deserves to be promoted. His CD mixes are great, but notice his style on "on-air" mixing includes cuts not known as Freestyle.

"Energy" would have been a great outlet for the music, but besides Georgie Porgie, they wouldn't give Chicago music much of a break. Chris Shebel was a great Program Director, not so much a great music director. They aired lots of "Euro", but what about the homegrown artists?

One day, the major programmers will have to discover that Chicago music fans are usually in it for the personalities and artists. We're a ittle more sophiticated than the old "It's got a good beat, and you can dance to it".
