Just curious to hear some opinions...What's the most slammin' freestyle label...BESIDES Mic Mac and Cutting?? I say Metropolitan...the old school Metroploitan specifically...Wiseguy and High Power are a real close second...
Metropolitan started out good and then started to suck really quickly.....and they wonder why they stopped playing freestyle songs on the radio.....Micmac suffered the same fate, but at least they were good for a couple of years, and even when they did start to get shitty there were still a few gems in the later years (Nyasia "Whos Got Your Love", Cynthia "Love Me Tonight", etc...)
Tommy Boy/ Timber records. Lately, they've been distributing excellent new school freestyle. I wish they'd make more freestyle than what they have now.
Of course anyone who knows me expect me to say "Tazmania", well I am gonna say Tazmania. They are the true originators of new school even though they had some artist that just should not have been recorded.
Actually let me revise this and say not a label but the studio "The Polygon!" Rob at the polygon is the man with new sounds!
Yo Where Is TOMMY BOY Commin From? They hardly Do New...
Anywayz...
NEW SKOOL LABELS = TAZMANIA * RIP * ARTISTIK * Till Around 98 *Sorry...
OLD SKOOL...MICMAC * Died Cuz Of Complications With Artists And So Forth. 2 Much 2 Type Here * METROPOLITAN AND CUTTING & ONNAROLL
Timber! & Robbins. although tha only freestyle artists i know of on Robbins are Cynthia,Rockell, GL, & K5. other than that they have more artists, but not freestyle.
but i have to say my favorite was MicMac back n tha day! "change on me", "i wont stop loving you", "no reason to cry", "crying over you" did they know how to work tha vocoder sound or what!!! LOL!
Good topic! Old school, Hmmm that's tough! I've GOT to go with both MicMac and Metropolitan! (Deniz's "U R the One" still gives me a bone to this day). New School - I like Artistik & Tazmania! I've got to get my freakin' hands on Artistik freestyle parade Vol. 4 already!!!
p.s. - sorry to be so graphic, I'm just being truthful about Deniz's song & what it does to me!
In my opinion, MIC MAC kept the classics coming one after the other up until 91-92. I remember going to the record stores and people were running to hear the new song on that label that had the red and yellow record sleeve. They did wonders for freestyle with:
CYNHTIA
JOHNNY O
BODY AND STYLE
EXO
TONASIA
RIOS SISTERS
NYASIA
EILEEN FLORES
ABBY LYNN
AND MORE
MARIBELL
SOAVÉ
TIANA
Can you guys think of another label that brought us so many hits and classics? Too bad they got greedy and it had to end.
