I don't know if this was ever asked, but I'm curious on everyone's opinion here! What is considered the "very first" Freestyle song by YOU Freestyle fanatics??? Some pals 'o' mine say Jenny Burton's tune "I remember what U like", others say Shannon's "Let The Music Play". I also hear "Planet Rock" considered as THE 1st freestyle jam. Gimme feedback. And 'foithamore'...Who coined the term "Freestyle"? Let's get some opinions my Freestyle brothers & sisters!

Hmm...

I think the first one was Nayobe. Please dont go. Shannon was more like Disco/dance. Although she has been put in the category of freestyle (loosely) She just happened to be the one who came out with a catchy dance tune that all races could enjoy and that's what put her on the map. In my opionion.😉

true! so I guess Jenny burton's tune 'I remember what U like" is in that category too? I always hear how Freestyle is this evolved version of Disco though! U know what I'm saying?!? & the older stuff has a very heavy taste of Disco too! I personally have always seen "Let the Music Play" as the defining "freestyle" song! C'mon, somebody COUNTERATTACK me!!!!

i think this was asked last week too 😉

i say "let the music play" was first (it's FREESTYLE!!!) 😛

this is actually an intresting topic that i've seen on this board a few times. every time this comes up, i learn something different too! i always thought it was a toss up between "please don't go" (Nayobe), "let the music play" (Shannon), & "i wonder if i take you home" (Lisa Lisa & Full Force). however, in tha last discussion, it was said that Shannon's record actually came out (which is true) before all tha rest of these singles. so i would consider "let the music play" to be tha first one.

but i am very intrested in knowing when freestyle was given a name. it used to be just music put into tha category it fit closest to. but all having tha same distinct sound. so i am very intrested to find out tha actual history of tha term "Freestyle". anybody have any information on this?

Hey yo Puta, Let the music play is the earliest freestyle song i know and probably is.

Im tired of so many people say that any of Nayobe songs was the first freestyle joint. This is NOT true. Her first joints were back in "85" and to avoid further arguments to play it safe i'd say the earliest "84". Same with Lisa Lisa with her first "84" joint "i wonder if i take you home". Shannons- Let the Music Play and Al Naafyish- Harish were both made in "83" and were the earliest tracks. that "planet rock" by african bambatta could've also been one of the earliest tracks its just i dont know what year it was produced.

Oh, and also "let the music play" is no where near disco. Its straight up freestyle with a capital F.

another one of the very first freestyle records was "honey to a bee" by tina b - this song came out in '84 which was a year before nayobe's "please don't go - so "please don't go" can not be considered the first freestyle song if there were some already out before it.

i say let the music play

but i think joey gardner said it was lisa lisa in the "history" of freestyle on the back of those comps!!!!

geez

Look My definition of freestyle led me to believe that nayobe was the first. I said shannon was disco dance not just disco!!! I'm not trying to start an argument here that why I ended my statement with IN MY OPINION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is not a debate just a guess which one was first question!! hmph😡

The first freestyle single.........

I believe the first freestyle single was Nayobe's "Please Don't Go".

Shannon and Tina B. were originally described as "electro-funk" records. Later on, they were lumped in with freestyle.

I don't know the year it was released, but I wonder where Alisha's "All Night Passion" fits in here? Is it electro-funk, freestyle, disco, or what?

look guys, let the music play was produced by three latin males. the 3 latin males who brought you "bad of the heart" and "where does that leave love" which were certified freestyle songs. you guys cant deny that it isnt. but i do believe that lisa lisa "i wonder if i take you home was a first breakthrough for freestyle.

RE: First Freestyle Song?

The first Freestyle song? Hmm, good one. I think that totally depends on what one considers to be 'Freestyle'. I personally don't consider Planet Rock to be Freestyle but that's just my opinion. There are also some old songs that can qualify as somewhat Disco'y that some might consider to be Freestyle. Just like the cost of living in the US... It's all relative.

LATIN HIP HOP WAS THE NAME FOR "FREESTYLE" WAY BACK IN THE DAY.

SHANNON, AS GREAT AS HER SONGS WERE AND STILL ARE, IS NOT "LATIN" THEREFORE DISQUALIFING HER AS THE FIRST.

NAYOBE'S "PLEASE DONT GO" WAS THE 1ST TO BE CALLED THE FIRST "LATIN HIP-HOP" SONG.

lol guido, why do you think the term latin hip hop was abolished? because people knew that it wasnt only the latins making this kinda music. plus, this was the sound back then, so to make it mainstream, the people in the business figured they'd come up with a better term than just latin hip hop just to avoid confusion. since, "latin hip hop" was just a street term. also, anybody anywhere else wouldnt have the slightest clue that the songs that were made at that time were made by latins and this is because of their sound. there was no latin twist of any sort. just straight up underground dance music. thats why the latins in the business today like ricky martin and jennifer lopez are getting in recognition today. they use spanish lyrics, use spanish chords, etc.... they represent!!

to say that Shannon didn't have tha first latin hip hop record just cuz she's not latin is kinda messed up. even though she's not latin, i give her props for having tha first latin hip hop/freestyle record.i mean tha record was produced by chris barbosa & mark liggett who also produced George LaMond & Monet who are both freestyle to me. race doesn't change sound.

Given the tendency to refer to a lot of "Freestyle Friendly" songs as Freestyle nowadays (such as trip-hop songs) i gotta say that without a doubt, the first Freestyle song ever was "Planet Rock", which came out in 1982. 😎
