Well we could start out with Shannon's "Let the music play" but at that time the genre did not really have a name. I would say when Expose came out with "COME GO WITH ME" AND "POINT OF NO RETURN" back in 1987, was really when Freestyle, then called Latin-Hop or Miami became exposed and remember as the Miami sound that eventually was changed and called Freestyle. Both songs hit number 5 in 1987, even though the original "Point of no return" was released in '85 by three different ladies. Expose was the first act to have a freestyle song hit the top 5. Their album Exposure reached number 16 in '87 also hitting double platinum in a year.
Sping Love or Fantasy Girl pop into my mind when I hear the word Freestyle. The bring back fun-ass times too. I know with some of the younger people, I'll Be Loving You is the song that brought them into Freestyle.
i think personally it would be "Show Me" by Cover Girls, or "When I Hear Music" by Debbie Deb those are the 2 songs I constantly ear on radio and see on compilations! plus everyone mainly says Cover Girls whenever you mention Freestyle!
when i mention freestyle a lot of people start singing to me
dreamboy/dreamgirl-cynthia & johnny 0
other mentions are-"spring love"-stevie b
"when i hear music"-debbie deb
Spring Love - Stevie B
Lookout Weekend - Debbie Deb
When I hear Music - Debbie Deb
Dreamboy/Dreamgirl - Cynthia and Johnny O
and of course
Let the Music Play - Shannon
Give me Tonight - Shannon
I know you said only one, but any of those are immediately recognized as freestyle. Ask anyone what freestyle is and they'll answer one of those, for sure!
I think there are many songs that define freestyle. Spring Love is a very good choice...I also feel that way about Where Are You Tonight by Coro, One Way Love by TKA, Come Into My Arms by Judy Torres, and Bad of the Heart by George LaMond.
cool, thanx guys. the reason why i ask is because i am making a cd with all the fine/ forgotten/chart topping goodies from the past and turnin it in to this dj here in NC. hopefully he'll play some of the tracks on radio. heres what i got as my final selections.........

or maybe Change on Me or Fantasy Girl, or maybe the group Freestyle with Dont Stop the Rock and Its Automatic. man, they were all so popular at the rollerrink.
well to me I would say that when I hear the word FREESTYLE I think of "Louder Than Love" by TKA, I Mean it to me defines what at the time was the crossing of "Old School" freestyle into "New School" Freestyle because it brought together something hott a new school sound with a old school vibe.
For me, it has to be One Way Love by TKA. That is the song that really got me hooked on freestyle, and while I have so many fave freestyle songs, that is the one that defines freestyle for me 🙂
