i agree thanks guys for your input. one more questions for the dj's.... when you are doing your thing which are the songs that bring people on the dance floor more often . those from the very beginging i.e.... one more shot, play at your own risk or those that came out when freestlye evolved i.e... bad of the heart, change on me...
this may be hard to decifer as i know these songs appeal to so many people.
i know when i go to a party today and any freestyle is played that really gets the crowed moving. i mean the mainstream stuff hypes people up to but when freestlye is played everyone starts bopping.

smoothrythm... why are you not educating us? where is your imput on this? im waiting......

When you go to most freestyle concerts today, all you hear is recycled pre-recorded mixes. Whatever happened to D.J.'s playing live....Wouldn't it be nice to hear old Todd Terry shiat. Black Riot, The Texican, Just Can't Understand, Just Make That Move etc.... also tracks such as La Girls "No More, No More", Tina B's January/February, Riana Paige's "Rescue Me"...yo the list goes on and on...I think that Rio Lopez is doing a good thing over at the club in Brooklyn....We must use this as a stepping stone and support Rio Lopez in his efforts to keep freestyle alive and well. All my acetates and test pressings of shit that only a select few have are ready to be played...I will support Rio and he knows where I'm at.......

where can i get Brenda K Starr's "Vicious Beat"

Ya know what? I don't think you can. Reason being- it was premiered and performed on "Beat Street", the movie, during the audition's scene @ the legendary Roxy.

However, I do have the soundtrack (both vol. 1 & 2), and the track isn't on there. So my guess is that it was never released in the first place. But shit, I think it should've been because it's so hot!

My utmost respect for Kraftwerk...'nuff said.

I don't know which song or artist started it all, but here are some of my Electro/Pre-Freestyle/Heartthrob favorites:

Hungry for your love - Hanson & Davis
Dominatrix (sleeps tonight) - Dominatrix
Pop goes my love - Freeez
I Like You - Phyllis Nelson
Angel Eyes - Lime
Don't Make Me Wait - Peech Boys
I Want It To Be Real/Once Upon A Time ("Okay chaps..take it from the top..") - John Rocca
All Night Passion - Alisha
It's Not Too Late - Sequal
Point Of No Return - Expose
Please Don't Go - Nayobe
Crash Goes Love - Loleatta Holloway

That's a mix right there!!!

I'm 99.9% sure Carlito is correct in that it was only used for the movie and never released. However, I long thought that the song that played as the Rocksteady Crew entered the Roxy before battling the other crew ("Only Love (Shadows)" by Lisa Fisher would never be available. And then in 2000 I found it on a compilation from Hot Records called "The Best Of Criminal Records". So basically I'm saying don't lose hope. LOL.

I'm going with Planet Patrol "Play At Your Own Risk" (1983). Sure it wasn't called "Freestyle" but it's clearly the prototype
I agree!

dag you guys really know your freestyle history. its so wonderful to see how far we have evolved. in my heart i will always believe that our evolution has only just began. "play at your own risk", "planet rock", "give me tonight" were our stepping stone. George Lamond, Joey Kid, Cynthia, Judy, Coro made it special. Nu Image, Caleb, Ayna can take it to another level if we just give them the chance and believe in them. the great producers like Chris Barbosa, Carlos Barrios, Mickey Garcia may not still be in the game but im sure there are people just as talented who have something to offer. maybe if we can get to the next level these great talents would want to get back in the game and help the music evolve still. thank you guys for all the information you have provided on this thread. we have come a long way and we have a long way to go.

Ok ya gonna kill me for saying this,.. I agree with Taezee's statement It was a movement of an evolution, but I think and this is what I believe it all steamed from the Disco Era ,. true it's not the same Music but there are so many simularity's there,.. You can still take an Old Disco song and bump that in clubs as well. Like I said this is only my theory as to where Freestyle music Steamed from until it eventually evolved to what it is today.

But don't shot me for saying that.

i dont believe it was just one song ..but an evolution into the movement we called freestyle. from songs like jenny burtons "i remeber what you like"... shannons " let the music play"...lisa lisa and cult jam i wonder if i take you home" c bank "one more shot" carol lynn towens "99 and a half".... many others but to say one song started it..cant really narrow it down to one song

and planet rock was definetly NOT the start of free style..but actually can symbolize THE END because when every body and thier mothers started using that beat..it pretty much destroyed the sound and credibility of freestyle amazes me even to this day that its still used in "new songs" by producers who just wont take the time or effort to make something new.... i hate it!!! if a song even starts out with that beat i wont even listen to it..ill toss the cd out of my car

I know that has been asked before and there are more than one possible answers but which song could be credited with starting the whole freestyle era?

i think it was "let the music play" or " A E I O U"

I don't think it was planet rock but i have heard people say it was.

what do you think?

i dont understand why that AEIOU song is considered freestyle. it dosent sound anything like freestyle 2 me. i dont get it. :huh

again a combination over a period of time from different elements, including disco and definetly a big influence from the electro sound was kraftwerk ,we didnt wake up one day and say "hey whats that song..why its freestyle!!" i dont even really remeber the music being called freestyle till like 1987

Historical

The music first developed in the early 1980's primarily in major cities like the New York, Philadelphia, and New Jersey area of the Eastern United States of America. It was a fusion of 70's disco and 80's breakdancing music, influenced also by sampling found in Hip-Hop. The genre can be further subdivided into Old Schooland New School. Old school was generally made before 1991.

The Music

FreeStyle music in general is heavily influenced by Latin music, especially with respect to rhythms and brass/horn and keyboard parts. The latin "clave" rhythm can be felt in many songs. The tempo of FreeStyle music is almost always between 110 and 130 BPM (Beats Per Minute), typically around 118 BPM. The keyboard parts are often elegant and clever, with many short melodies and countermelodies. Again a strong influence of latin music.

Many people list "Let the music play" (1983) by Shannon as the first freestyle track. The electro funk sound was changed and refined adding Latin American rhythms and a totally syncopated drum sound. That was definitely a reason why the style came to be very popular among Latinas as well as Italian Americans. Hence, the names "Latin Hip Hop" or "Latin Freestyle". Now, the more neutral term "Freestyle" is generally preferred.

i think it was either lookout weekend or when i hear music because they came out in the early 80's instead of the late 80's like most freestyle songs

A good example would be Xscape's new song "What's Up.
