Unfortunately, that is one of the drawbacks of reading the words on the page as opposed to hearing them. Sometimes, if you can't hear the person's voice, it is possible to mistake an innocent joke as something more.

You are one of the most respected members of CF and I have great respect for your knowledge and all you do for this site. I didn't mean to offend you.

I was just trying to make a joke. I guess the joke wasn't all that funny.

Once again, I am truly sorry.
