DAMN . . . totally feelin' the love on this thing

RHOQ: Even though you showed up late for the party, glad you made it :cparty . You drop'd a lotta names I've never heard before. Prob cuz I've never stood over the wheels of steel, spinnin' vinyl like a lot of you DJ dudes here. I'm one of those tweebie loosers who only listens to freestyle on CD, pathetic eh? :sosad

DJLEGEND: Got a kick out of your sidenotes/commentary eg "Now, if Mickey could do something on his own rather than licence tracks". haha, almost left skids on my CK's with that line, too funny.

I'm gonna pick-up where you left off a tiny bit, and gloss over some of my picks . . .

C A R L O S "after dark" B E R R I O S
Da man!! . . . When I first heard Ron Esco's "give me your heart", I said to myself, Carlos has got to be freestyle's chosen son.
The church organ intro, that crazy "YAZ" loop. Just when I thought it couldn't get any better . . . BOOM!!!, those out-of-control Berrios beats start kickin' the sh*t out of the 12' woofers and that was it. I've been in awe of this dude ever since . . .

C H R I S B A R B O S A
Who could forget summer of 83' when SHANNON'S "let the music play" was get cranked out of the FM DIAL with that crazy intro . . . WHIPPISHHHH . . . that was my first love with the sound of freestyle

T O N Y M O R A N
Another giant in the game. Dude has that golden touch. Every project he works on, turns out to be the artist's best work eg. NOEL'S "question" absolutely kills. As a matter of fact, that's the only Noel track I've ever really liked. Ditto TKA . . . they're best work eg "don't be afraid" and "tears may fall" was when Tony came into the mix and worked his magic in the studio . . .

O W E N "OS" S O B A
Don't know much about this dude. Heard all kinds of campfire stories, everything from him being a cop, to an astronaut and everything in between, LOL. His classic jam SOAVE'S "cryin' over you", is one of those once in a life time jams. Crazy ability to tell a story with brutal intensity . . . accapellas, dubs, synth hook, wicked drum beats, you name it. The fact that Owen created such a great track with a very average vocalist is only a testiment to his genious as one freestyle's all-time greatest hit makers . . .

L E W I S M A R T I N E E
Legend. Can't think of anyone who cranked out so many hits while working with so many diff groups and artists without even takin' a breather . . . EXPOSE, SEQUAL, COVER GIRLS (one night affair), PARIS BY AIR etc. etc. One of his best tracks IMHO is VOICE OF FASHION'S "only in the night". Love the intro . . . hard pounding drums in an aggressive tribal rhthym, classic!!

T O N Y "pretty" B U T L E R
This crazy mofo's stuff is made up of legend. I've heard all kinds of funky stories about this dude. If only 1/2 of em' are true, he was defintely a character. One of the few freestyle producers ever to pump & bump 3 groups simultanously with equal success . . . FREESTYLE, TRINERE, AND DEBBIE DEB. There were campfire stories about while even he was on top of his game, he was working out of his basement garage studio, shoe string budget and bare bones for recording equipment. If that's even remotely true, it only adds mystic to his already impressive rep . . .

S T E V I E B
Funny thing about Stevie. I only respect one tune he's ever done. It's one of the most intense, aggressive, mucho macho freestyle tracks of all-time "stop the love". Don't know if he was goin' loco with Miami's coco at the time*wink*, but this tune is H-A-R-D. I'm pretty sure him working with Tolga on his debut album "Party your body" had a lot to do with the overall aggressive "feel" of the track and the album overall . . .

T O L G A
I've always loved this guy. He's the type of dude who brings out the best out of everyone he's worked with . . . LINEAR, STEVIE B, G.T., TONY MARINO, RAHN, RAY GUELL, EVERYONE AT SUMMIT RECORDS, UPSTAIRS RECORDS etc. etc.
His signature sound . . . aggressive, hard thumpin' drum beats have always been his trademark

M I C H A E L R U S C K A
Toronto's premier freestyle hit maker. He had a stable so full of freestyle stars it's not even funny . . . MANUELLA, JOEE just to name a couple. One of the few mid/nu school producers to kick it old school. Shameless, and unappologetic for lifting some of CHRIS BARBOSA's juice. If you ever get a chance to listen to two tracks from his debut album "Tiamo's Freestyle Collection Vol.1" -- MANUELLA'S "don't try to come back to me" and "who you foolin'" are an awsome throw back to the old school era . . .

J O E E
Although, he doesn't get much respect from the freestyle community, this guy has a signature track "angel" from his 2nd album "TRUTH" that still to this day, gets monster radio rotation. The track is about his cousin who died in a car accident at the tender age of 17. It's a tune that's gotta be heard to be believed, it's that awsome.

Mykey, good call on Mike Rucska. Definitely one of the most under-rated producers in freestyle. One of the few shining examples of good Canadian freestyle.

All the producers you guys listed are great picks, but my personal favourite of all-time has to be Carlos "After Dark" Berrios.

One thing all these producers have in common is a certain "quality" that permeates their work. With all the cheesy and cheap sounding Planet Rock productions that seem to dominate freestyle today, it's nice to honour the producers that never settled for mediocrity.

🙂

To be honest the list of 30 or so "Greatest Freestyle Producers Of All-Time" was a collaborative effot between DJ Legend & myself. We were working on some new tracks this afternoon and decided to compile our list while taking a break.

I wouldn't call you a "tweebie loser" (what the hell is a "tweebie"?) just because you only listen to Freestyle on CD. It just means that there is a whole other world of Freestyle filled with tons of wonderful rare classics waiting for you to discover it.

We chose to honor our idols - those who are often overlooked, but will never be forgotten. Each and every name mentioned in our list has contributed something special to Freestyle music - many are Freestyle's unsung heros deserving to be recognized for their efforts.

If if you've heard of the names, I can almost guarantee that you are familiar with their msuic. 😉

Its nice to see all the love given to Carlos "AfterDark" Berrios. He is a close personal friend of mine, and I bet he doesn't even know about this board. I will definitely let him know how many hearts he has touched with his work....
