i agree with all of you so far. i am a true fan. i've met several freestyle and dance artists. i treat them as if they are just an average person. hope this next comment isn't taken wrong...they don't pay my bills or change my life so y should i treat them like kings or queens. they bleed like me, eat like me and sleep like me. i never have asked to get a picture and i only asked once for an autograph. i support them by buying the music and attending the shows in my area. i try to show respect to them and hope to get it in return. some of them like TKA are very friendly. they treat u like an equal. i don't like it when a artist starts to act like they are better then me. that's when i lose interest in them. well i have only good experiences from the artists i've met through cf.com. NYA, keep up the great work. you are a very lovely person.

thanks Aim😉 and thanks for your response too. 😉

Today, in the year 2003, I've grown to be a fan of the artist rather than the music. I'm going to be honest, Freestyle hasn't really grown with me for quite some time now. At the age of 26, I'm still trying to find everything that came out back in the day that I might have missed. I'm a fan of the artist. Artists such as India, Brenda, Judy, Lisette, Chrissy, Coro, and Safire I truly admire. Just to name a few. The quality of the music just isn't the same to me. Does that mean I hate Freestyle all together. Hell nah, there's some shit that I heard in the past 3 years that I liked but I always have to think twice about buying something that is unknown to me. Anyhow, I'm a sucker for the old-skool.

Fan-dom is such an interesting thing. Dayer's comments were right on point in being a fan of an artist vs. a fan of the music genre. Even as a fan of an artist, sometimes the artist does something that completely turns the fan off to them. For example, I used to be a pretty big Madonna fan, but I was just not feeling that Ray of Light electronica thing that she was doing. And, since then, I've been able to listen to her music more objectively and realize that she's not the best writer out there, and the preachy nature of her music lately bothers me. So I went from being a huge fan, to not being one at all. I'm waiting for her to come out with something that will make me love her again.

Janet, on the other hand, can do no wrong in my eyes. I find her to be gorgeous, talented, and consistent in the music she creates. I don't see her trying to jump on a trend, suddenly putting out a Norah Jones-type album, or the whole sk8er thing like Avril Lavigne. Madonna, however, has been known to capitalize on what's popular and that goes way back to "Vogue," and has continued through the electronica thing. But, I digress...

In short, it can go either way. Either you love the artist, or you love their music, or both, or neither. And, it fluctuates with each release. The thing is, that these artists are viewed as "icons," and not as human beings. We see them on TV, hear them on the radio, watch their videos, and somehow we think we have authority to comment on how they look, sound, what they do in their private lives, etc. Now I won't take full responsibility for dogging certain people because these same celebrities who complain about it are the first ones to call their publicists to ask why their picture is not in the paper that day. Damn, I'm on a tear! LOL

A fan is someone who accepts the artist as they are, without commenting on talent (or lack thereof) or dissing them.

A fan is someone who spends their money on cds/shows/stations or supports the artists/genre somehow.

A fan doesn't download music and give it away to people looking for it, unless it's a rare/hard to find track.

Fans don't particpate in spreadin' the hate or gossip about the artists.

Fans appreciate when the artists release their material. If you end up not liking it, at least talk why you don't like it POLITELY, and don't bash for the sake of bashing. That's someone's hard work you're describing.

Hey Ivan, we have completly differnet opinions. Janet's music does nothing for me, I have maybe 2 of her tapes. Madonna, I have all of her stuff on vinyl, tape, and cd. Each release sounds fresh, and exciting. Looking forward to her new cd.

Chuck, I often get into the Janet/Madonna debate with my friends who are big Madonna fans. For some reason, these two are pitted against each other (and I do it myself), but truthfully, they are two totally different artists and comparing them is comparing apples to oranges. I'm also looking forward to Madonna's new CD; as I said, I'm waiting for something to blow me away. I'm also curious about the new video, too. I just hope she doesn't try to make too much of a political statement because I think most celebritites should leave the politics to the politicians and not try to exert their perceived influence over the feeble minded public. 🙂

I wouldn't say I'm as "loyal" as most other freestyle fans out there, but I know that I have tried to become one as much as possible. I support all artists when I can, and as put in the other posts I follow the artist wherever they may go and will continue to do so in the future!

YES I'M A REAL, HARDCORE FREESTYLE FAN AND PROUD OF IT

Hey Nyasia,
Excellent thread !!!!

Just want to add that i've been a DJ for over 25 years back in the Bronx. I was there when freestyle started and still play, push & promote the sh*t out of it. I've worked hard to get all the vinyl, artist pics and drops that I have. I can say that I have had the honor of meeting so many artist and have had the pleasure of having them in my studio.

I CHERISH every telephone call I get and picture I take with them.

Ive been asked to DJ other genres for "REAL MONEY THEY SAY" and for some reason, I choose not to.
Foolish? Maybe.
I cant get enough of Freestyle and thats why I do a live show every weekend in between a full time job & family.
I LOVE IT SO MUCH IT F*CKEN HURTS.

SO...YES I'M A REAL, HARDCORE FREESTYLE FAN AND PROUD OF IT!!!!

Thank you to all old & new Freestyle artist.
I appreciate & support you 150%

Just my 2 cents.
God Bless,
DJ Paradise

Just as D.J. Paradise, I'm a hardcore fan and proud of it.

I am, however, a fan of the music first amd foremost.

Peace from da east :heee lol

Nyasia, I definitely know what you are reffering to. Let's just say, I know many people who mistake "quantity" with "quality" because they lead us to believe because of so many "mega stars" who are "air brushed" to look good. More emphasis seems to be placed on their image than the way they sound. "The better you look, the more "marketable" you will be. I thank the Good Lord above, that he has blessed me with fans who have been there through thick and thin and they are the reason why I kept striving. They embrace me so much that although at times I feel not worthy because I know I'm no prince charming, the fire in their eyes when they see me makes me feel like "The King of the World." So I've learned to let my supporters and my sound do the talking. It hurts those "quantity seekers" most when they see someone who they don't think deserves the attention they are getting being loved so much. That is the best way to tell those people, "How you like me now biotchhhhhhhhh" Lol

I feel artists, such as Madonna, have every right to take a personal stance on any political statement or point that is displayed by our government or any other. Especially in today's pre-war period, I don't agree with 75% of the shit that I read or see on television. Does my opinion matter? Of course not. Can I get my opinion heard nationwide? Worldwide? Probably not. So along comes Madonna, as fierce as usual, with a new video and song, with an opinion that probably 50% of the world both agree with. And it gets across to anyone and everyone. That is what we need. And if takes making a video about it or wearing a certain article of clothing, than so be it.
