Solution to the Judy Torres Debate

🤖 AI Summary

Bottom line: At the end of the fday, a simple 3:00 freestyle mix on the single would have more than served its purp[ose on the cd single release, especially at retail given that Adam and Judy's names are established and proven brands in the freestyle genre.

The reason why there's not a freestyle version is because they don't want to be associated with it in any way. They are ashamed of freestyle. We shouldn't be giving them all this attention anyways. Let's give the attention to artists that are actually making freestyle music.

this is a great remark....we need to stick withn the ones that support us...when freestyle came out in the 80's, it was not on the radio...it was in the streets...if we don't listen to radio they will find out why and cater to the change by adding freestyle to it's rotation...

judy will need to seperate from adam and his played out productions...
she would have done better with someone else...

forget the 500 budget for a freestyle mix cause miami did it for 400 with hot... :timetopar .......this is the problem today
setting a price on production is bad for bizz because freestyle is about a lot more then just sampled planet rock beats...... :lol

but the track is getting what they where looking for radio play on more then one radio station in the same market i like the track and a big fan of Jidy torres regardless if it is freestyle or not

Let me just clear up some mis-conceptions that are being written about here:

1) Judy Torres has NEVER told myself or, as far as I know, anyone at Robbins Entertainment that she didn't want a Freestyle mix or that she is done with Freestyle.

2) We did not make this record. We heard it, liked it and as we do when we like records, we put them out. We took the mixes that were done, pressed up a record and are getting it on the radio. Last week, it was one of our biggest sellers.

3) With that said, Singles do not sell. Freestyle mixes do not add 3-4,000 to the sale of a freestyle single, most singles nowadays cannot sell 3-4,000 units. Things that look good on paper in a marketing class usually don't work out in the real world. If labels could sell 3-4,000 on a freestyle track I believe you'd see a lot more people becoming label owners and making some pocket change.

4) In response to: "The reason why there's not a freestyle version is because they don't want to be associated with it in any way. They are ashamed of freestyle."

As much as some people may not believe this, we love freestyle music at Robbins. We have supported it throughout our beginnings (1996) and before at Profile Records. Personally, I was on the radio in NYC when Freestyle broke and was one of the first people to play it. At Robbins, we don't care what kind of Dance Music it is, when we hear a track we like we put it out. Freestyle Artists from Rockell to Victoria Angeles to Cynthia to Kathy Phillips and George Lamond, have been supported by our efforts and we continue to support the music when we hear stuff that we love.

5) We can debate what is freestyle forever but some people have said that Rockell's "Can't We Try" and "When I'm Gone" are freestyle. To me, this is in that league.

6) In response to: "Who ever advised JPaker on not doing a freestyle remix advised him wrongly. They should have know that we would express our discontent on the chat rooms."

I advised myself and that's the beauty of living in America, Freedom of Speech. This board and others like it, were created for the exchange of ideas and comments, like those that have been posted in this thread. Talking is a good thing. Not everyone feels the same about things like music. Not everyone is going to like the record as is, and that's fine. But I bet some people will discover Judy for the first time as a result of this track. Our goal is to get Judy back on the radio with current music. So far, so good.

I do try and check this site out occasionally but if you have any questions that you'd like answered, feel free to e-mail me at: jparker@robbinsent.com

Oh, and one last thing, the name and some of you know is John Parker not jparker. 😉

Thanks and have a great day!!!

I just picked up the CD at Tower Records and I like it. Maybe her next single will have a freestyle or breakbeat mix. I am just glad she is making music again. People seem to be unhappy about the new single but it could have been worse, it could have been hip-hop.

With that said I think we should drop the whole subject. Everybody heard it from a major source associated with this record. We all got the facts now let the song be. It's a great song and if you don't like don't buy it. If you have a better single or cd to offer the freestyle community. Put it out!! But, if you can't offer a better product or something to replace what YOU think is song that is no good then I wouldn't complain. Be part of the solution not the problem!!! :walk

I concur Tanktruck..

Thanks to John Parker for giving us his side of it.

yeah, but all i wanted was a stinkin freestyle ver... JUST KIDDING!

Attention

It seems to me that people have a warped sense of business. For someone who always includes "we must stick together" in his emails and posts, you don't practice what you preach. First, you always seem to be promoting this "Philly Freestyle" versus the world---war. This is not about Philly and it's not a war, it's about the music. It's thinking like this that won't get anyone who follows that thinking anywhere. This is not 1980 or the 90's, it's 2004. Is there a market for Freestyle? Sure. How big? Not as big as some of you think. Most people are only interested in the Old stuff. But you should already know this.

You and some of your associates continue to take pop shots at me and what I've done. Here's the bottom line, I've done things... Many things. Some good and some bad. You make remarks about what I've done and money I've made. I did them and I made the money. So much for the "sticking together" huh? What have you accomplished? This isn't me versus you, but that's what you're making it. This all started when I announced the Stevie B show at Dublin's. As the promoter for the show, I made the decisions for the event, no one else. This means I alone, booked the show and the talent. I promoted the show, as well as financed it. When you put up your own money and do your own thing, I won't be questioning you. I will respect the fact you put your money where your mouth (or fingers with the internet boards) is. I've been in this game for a long time and as long as I'm paying for it... I WILL DO WHATEVER I WANT TO DO!

You state below that you feel Judy needs to separate from Adam. In my opinion I think you're wrong, especially after John's post. Judy is probably making more noise now than the past. Radio play and sales will speak for themselves eventually. As for Adam, he's a genius. Look here we are talking about him again. He accomplished alot and is continually talked about weekly. Good or bad, people talk about him. Regardless of the sound of the record they put out, I wish them the best of luck (Judy, Adam, John and the whole Robbin's crew) with the record. I hope it makes a TON of noise!

I really do wish your company the best in whatever you do. I hope you have 10 hit records; it would only help business in general. If you even have just one hit, you can say it and brag all you want. If that day ever comes you can then say I told you so to everyone you like, even me. You can talk and talk but I've learned people only shut up and listen when you actually DO something.

So until then... best of luck!

btw -- this is the new sound of freestyle. who ever says it doesnt sound like freestyle is wrong. judy didnt sell out, she just is keeping with modern times. freestyle is not going to sound like it used to back in the 80's. it's more like dance music now.

i like this song. i hope she makes more songs that have this same feel.

Well that's just wrong. Euro is not Freestyle. There is new freestyle out that sounds the way it should. This is not an example of it. "Air I Breathe" is like the anti-freestyle. There is no way a record could be any less freestyle. Hip Hop is more freestyle than this song is.

How could a true freestyle fan say something like that? Freestyle comes from hip hop. This is the problem with freestyle. It's own fans don't even know where it comes from.
