I just went to CNN's website and there was a breaking news bulletin that Rick james was found dead today in his apartment. Dont know any other details yet.

Just read on ABC News that he died of Natural causes.

Flavoring his heavy funk grooves with a splash of pop and a dash of rock, bassist/singer/songwriter/producer Rick James cooked up heaping helpings of hits for himself and other artists. Drug problems contributed to his artistic decline, but seeing a dozen blue-mohawked punk rockers skanking furiously atop the tables down at Danny's Oki Dog to James's 1981 mega-hit "Super Freak" blasting out of the radio is a sight neither easily forgotten nor dismissed.

Born James Johnson on February 1, 1948 in Buffalo, N.Y., James was first signed to Motown as a member of the Mynah Birds rock group, whose ranks included Neil Young and Bruce Palmer (future Buffalo Springfield members) and Goldy McJohn (future Steppenwolf ). The tapes have never been released. In 1978, James re-signed with Motown. Now writing and producing his own material, he immediately hit with the strong P-Funk derivations, "You And I" and "Bustin' Out." The multi-platinum 1981 Street Songs LP remains James's finest moment, containing "Give It To Me Baby" and "Super Freak"--and sounding something like Godzilla doin' the pop-lock with King Kong. In addition to recording hit duets with the Temptations ("Standing On The Top") and Smokey Robinson (the gorgeous ballad "Ebony Eyes"), James produced hits for the Mary Jane Girls ("In My House"), white soul-singer Teena Marie ("I'm A Sucker For Your Love") and comedian Eddie Murphy ("Party All The Time"). "Slow Dancin'"--a 1982 album-only duet with Chaka Khan --is an undiscovered gem. His career cooling, James moved to Reprise in 1988. When M.C. Hammer hit with 1990's "U Can't Touch This"--freely based on "Super Freak"--James successfully sued for co-writer's credit. In 1991, he was arrested on cocaine/torture charges and received a five-year sentence. He's now rehabbed and released.

REST IN PEACE RICK JAMES.

REST IN PEACE RICK JAMES.

No one that young just dies of natural causes like that. It was most likely drugs.

I read his story line awhile back. He was a drug addict and supposedly quit. In the back of my mind, I never thought so.

Damn.....that's some shit. I wonder how Teena Marie is takin' it. They we so close...and recorded a duet on her new album, "La Dona".

"Fire & Desire" is the shit. Might wanna check it out.

I agree. Drug related. He was a huge user and when he got out of jail, I doubt he kicked his habit, especially with today's phucked up prison system.

Rest in peace, man....

"I'm Rick James...........bitch!"

I agree...it's very unusual for someone that young to die of natural causes.

Carlito......you IM'ed me the other day about "the song". LOL!!! Anyway, I wanna get my hands on it from you. Can you email it to me???

Sorry FreestyleGal, for the thread jackin'. 😉 I know this ain't WCM but this dude rarely get's on AIM. lol

Actually He Supposedly Did Stop. Natural Causes Could Have Been That His Heart Was Weak. He Did Have A Heart Attack A Few Years Back. The Heart Deteararates Itself Once Something So Powerful As A Heart Attack Happens. And After Years Of Drug Use Who's To Say How Good His Kidneys Were Maybe One Of Them Gave Out.

Well when people say "natural causes" I would assume they're not talking about a heart attack and just died for the hell of it. But since you say so, then I guess I would assume that they don't really know the real cause of his death.

They were saying the same thing about John Ritter once he died. Later, info. started coming in with detail and we were told of what really happened. Damn. I miss him!!

"Life's too short!! Oh, oh, oh, love will never hurt me. Life's too short!! Did you think i'f fall apart?"

Damn!!!, Rick dead...i can't believe it!!! - RIP bro. 🙁

exactly my thought :sosad

Mine too. He was responsible for so much hot stuff back then with his own records ("Give It To Me Baby", "Mary Jane", "Fire & Desire) and acts he discovered/produced (Teena Marie, Mary Jane Girls-who can forget them! lol). And he produced a crazy track for Mariah Carey called "All My Life" a few years back. He was one of the artist/producers keeping funk alive in the new millenium.

R.I.P.

My God, I hope the stars of today and tomorrow will learn from this...I knew all about the drugs(btw, according to the New York Daily News, it's become a coroner's case, so an autopsy will be done)but even still, I didn't see this coming...I'm Rick James....BITCH!!! That's f***in hiliarious!! Anyone remember when Keenan Ivory Wayans spoofed him on In Living Color? RIP "SUPERFREAK".
