27 Filipino children die and 100 sick and hospitalized. They contracted food poisoning from fried cassava roots. It's a snack which is a vegetable. They have vitamins, but if not cooked properly, it can turn into cyanide poisoning.

If something can turn into poison when cooked badly, I say don't sell it as a snack!!

Wow thats horrible. If I'm correct cassava is what we call yuca, I make this all the time. I had no idea if its not cook right it becaome cyanide.

Wow, that's horrible....I can't even imagine how the parents must feel. That's such a tragedy.

You know it's to the point where we can't eat anything anymore. Really! I'm so sick of hearing this kind of thing. They find something wrong with everything.

I've never heard of a Puerto Rican dying from eating "Yucca", and we've been eating it for centuries.

How the h*ll did they cook it? With gasoline?

BTW, Last week I gave ALL of my students a taste of latino snacks (Parcha, Guanabana, Guayaba nectars, Chicharrones, Platano Chips, Malta, etc.), AND some Goya-brand YUCCA chips.

Things like this really get to me. I know how these parents are feeling. Sometimes I wish there was something I could do so that no other parent experiences this loss, but all I can do is pray. Us parents that lose children are never the same. Our life is usually divided into the time before that child and after that child. I mean what are we supposed to say when people ask us how many children we have? I pray that God may give these parents the strength to deal with their loss.

On a different subject, how are we NOT supposed to cook yucca. I cook it alot and I don't wanna poison anyone in my house. Though one thing I have read is many fruit SEEDS do in fact contain cyanide.

How can they sell it if it kills you??????? do they put a label on it to say if not cooked properly, it can turn into cyanide poisoning.

Cyanide has a bitter-almond odor. If I'm not mistaken only certain people have the ability to smell it. It is also a common industrial polutant. I still don't know how NOT to cook yuca.

OMG! For real? Geez.. I KNEW there was a reason I didn't care for it! It's one of those things that I just NEVER acquired a taste for.. Now I sure as HELL will keep away from it.. How sad!!
