I have the opportunity to relocate to the NYC area. I have an opportunity to join a law firm as there IT Director in NYC, but I'm not sure about relocating from So. SoCal. It would be a huge culture shock for my 4 kids.

They asked about what kind of compensation and we are trying to come to some type of agreement but I have no idea since I don't know the cost of living, housing costs and what the best areas would be for the kids.

Does anyone here know how to calculate the difference in the cost of living from SoCal to NY?????

I have checked a few websites that have good info on it but I don't want to endup short changing myself.

Another thing is the outdoor stuff. We like to take the dirt bikes out on the weekends and I don't know if there is anything like that out there or do you have to drive a few hours just to get out to some open land.
 
You dont necessarily need to live in the city. You can find great places to live within the suburbs .. your family might like Long Island or maybe Westchester; since these places have more of a country feel to them. They are not too far from the city but far enough to see the difference. In these areas, you can do the outdoorsy stuff!

As far as cost of living, I'm not too sure.
 
MyOnly said what I was going to say.... to rent a house out in L.I. you're talking about a good 1,800 per month, plus the Long Island Rail road to get into NY, about 200 per month.. that's not including gas, elec. and water.... besides your other necessities... as for rents on apts in NY... location, location, location.. Manhattan, you're talking about the same rent for the house but you'd get a one bedroom apt... it all depends on what you want or are able to spend....
 
It all depends on how you are used to living currently. Here on Long Isalnd, you cannot buy a house for any cheaper then about $450, 000 to be in a decent neighborhood not too far from NYC about 45 minutes on the train where the schools are good. It all depends on the schools and the neighborhood you live in and this is for a house that is nothing special 50 or 60 by 100. I have a cousin in San Rafael that sold her house in Pacifica up in the fog about two years ago for $450,000 so I know Californians are used to high prices and small property.
 
Yeah, I'm on Long Island too, about an hour and a half, two hours from Queens, and Heartbrake is right on the prices. Some places a little more, some a little less. In my area, dirtbikes are really popular, I just don't know where the legal riding spots are. We have lots of beaches out here, very suburban. Westchester's nice too, really hilly. The housing cost out here is really bad. Everything out here is a grip. I was thinking of buying something in the range of about 450K to 600K, but I would like to find a good size lot. Is there any areas where you can get at least 2.5 acres without out having to go out to far. Is land out there tough to come by? I have a 20 acre lot out here, but it's out a ways, so I have a 50 mile commute. I don't mind being way out as long as I get what I want and the wife and kids are happy. It's going to be such a drastic change for them as it is.

My understanding is that people on the east coast are used to long commutes on the trains, 1 to 2 hours. Out here its a similar commute but you're sitting in your car the whole time.
 
Hmmmm.....that's a big step. I'm trying to get out of NYC and you're trying to come here. The rents are outrageous! I wouldn't recommend living in the city because your kids may not adapt to it well. These city kids are wild! For real. I won't lie. You may want to stick with the surburbs like Myonlysweetie said. It's still expensive. But it's not the city. It's kind of hard for me to personally tell you anymore than this because like I said, I'm trying to get out of here. I'm so sick of NYC. But good luck. Congrats on the job opportunity. 🙂

What part of SoCal are you in? I just relocated to Texas from Ventura County. A 20acre lot will get you some nice change. Can even hook you up with a Realtor.

It is tough. Will be major culture shock though. I've only been to NY once. I hear its expensive to live there just like CA.

Yeah, same here in the SF bay area. Very expensive. My mom owns a house in Hayward, it's only 1100 square feet, pretty small. It's worth over a half a million bucks....and it's in the hood! No BS.

When I was in SA, I almost bought a house, huge (4 br's, 3 bath's, 2 lr's, dining area, 2 story, 2 car garage, huge yard, etc...) for $89,000! And that's in a really nice area (Oak Creek). That's insane how the cost of living is so different everywhere.
 
Currently I'm paying about $2600. for housing and then about another $650 for utilities, cell phones and with food and all the other stuff I believe it comes out to about $4200. give or take.

So you have housing and commuting (train) costs. Are there any other hidden costs?

I can vouch for that! I used to live in San Jose where the prices are really outrageous.

Yup. I sold my house in Ventura County for 560,000 and bought one twice the size here in Frisco for 250. Same house here would go for about 1mil in SoCal and 2mil in the Bay. Just nuts!

How about education for the kids? Are they going to public school, private school or catholic school?
 
They go to Public school, but there are not to many private or catholic schools out here. I mean there are some but most kids go to public schools. I guess I might endup putting them in private schools out there? WOuld that be better?

I'm tryin to do searches on the net for real estate and I can't find anything. Can any of you give me some suburb type of neighborhoods or zip codes that might help in the search.
 
Check out http://www.hamptons.com/ and it gives you an overview and links for all of the east end of Long Island which is on the average of about 2 hour drive from the city. It includes different towns and links to real estates and education. I live in the west of Southampton town. The South Fork is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and a few bays which separates it from the North Fork. To the North of the North Fork is the Long Island Sound, which separates us from CT. The more eastern part of the island has more beaches, more land generally and lots of vinyards. Hope it helps...

i live in san jose and it is a grip to live here. I rent a 3bd duplex and i pay about $1600.00! Thats nuts. Its crazy out here!
 
Try http://www.mlslirealtor.com/ this will allow you to select Nassau and Suffolk homes on Long Island. Suffolk is where you get the land. Nassau is usually no more then 80X100 and that's considered a good size. In Suffolk the homes are usually larger and the land in bigger. Go to find a home, select Suffolk and there is a list of towns to choose from. Suffolk starts around Melville and goes out from their. It may be best to find a map of Long Island so you know how far you are willing to go out.
