Wish you luck on this difficult decision, I lived too long in NY and loved and hated the cold winters. I looooooove the outdoors and so that's why I'm never going back to live in NY, but that's my opinion.

Anyway it's a huge culture change for that matter

Long Island has many beautiful areas but the cost of buying a house is through the roof and property taxes are some of the highest in NY state. If you rent you might be able to find a better situation but as others have said, the Long Island Railroad is expensive AND has many MANY delays - on the other hand, areas like Astoria, QUeens and PArk Slope, Brooklyn are close to Manhattan, are safe and nice and are not as expensive as Manhattan itself - I live in Riverdale, which is right below Westchester and it is a beautiful area with woods, beautiful parks etc (baseball legend Willie Mays lives down the street from me!) And the rents are not as crazy as Manhattan.

I would suggest visiting www.newyork.craigslist.org - Craigslist is a great site with all kinds of free ads from apartments for rent to job listings and by checking out what is available you can get a better idea of what you want to do.

Thanks guys. this has all been very helpfull. I think my wife is getting cold feet. Neither one of us have ever lived outside of Cali, so I don't know how this is going to work, but it's a great opportunity so I'm definitely going to explore it.

I wish only the best luck anybody can have for you and your family. Hope it all works out and you're happy with your new job and life in a new place. 🙂

another think you can do is look in New Jersey
commuting is a lil better cuz it's closer to the city..
and the prices are a lil less then in NY
we just brought a house for 370.000 and it's 5 brd rooms 3 baths here in clifton so that was not bad..
but there are different prices..
the schools here are good.. that can be something else you can look into
by car i'm 30 minutes away from the city and hour from queens
in bus/train about the same maybe 10 15 minutes more to the city if there is traffic

Well I have lived on Long Island as well as every dayum Borough lol and prices vary Suffolk County on Long Island tends to eb a little cheaper then Nassau county but its further out and the commute into the city is longer but you can find cheaper homes with more land. Nassau county it all depends where in Nassau there are good towns and shitty towns if your looking for an apt you wont find anything below 1300 for a 3 bedroom so it would run yuo from abuot 1500-1800 for a 3 bdrm but as I said it all depends I am talking abotu teh good areas where I grew up it wasnt bad it wasnt the greatest but it was nice and schools are great. If your looking to live in the city it would be about the same but there are great areas to live in. Brooklyn has some nice neighborhoods I currently live in Brooklyn in bensonhurst and teh area I am in is real nice quie t but no outdoorsey activitys . I am currently looking for a 2bdrm so I have been looking into apts and pricing and for a single mama its hard to get something affordable. My sister is in real estate buying selling mortgaging homes etc so she would prob have a better idea of exactly what is outdoor and what you can get for what then me. I will have her check in and post up. Good luck

Is New Jersey a little more wide open? Since I've never been over there it's tough for me to visualize the neighborhoods. Out here there are a bunch of tract homes and communities where once you get to the end there is nothing but open land and custom homes. These are great areas to play and the price of land is much cheaper. I would like to find someting like that but I can't imagine an environment like that since it is the city........
