ok..
just think about it. dance music has a VERY bad rep with most listeners because they think it sounds cheesy. freestyle is primarily dance-music oriented in toronto as we all know, so it falls under that hated ginobeats category.
now i DONT mean to bash on any talented freestyle artists, but if i had spent my entire life listening to either rock or rap, and i tried listening to the planetfreestle cd, i would immediately press the "stop" button because it's dance music. i've tried getting my friends into freestyle and 80% of the time they've given me bad reviews. thats the basic problem, freestyle nowadays doesn't appeal to the average listener. so unless freestyle starts sounding like hiphop instead of dance, or if everyone in the world starts listening to dance music, freestyle is doomed for us for at least 5 more years.
i have one suggestion: this has been mentioned a lot in the past couple years: educate the young people. if freestyle's the first thing they start listening to, they will love it. most of us were hooked to freestyle in our preteen years so i think thats the way to go, appeal to the young.

So why does trance and euro get a lot of air play and recognition not only on 103 but on other stations...they too are dance music

Someone made a comment that SPG only markets their CDs in the GTA. That's not true actually; I've seen them for sale at the HMV in Ottawa.

You must look at it this way. SPG is not in the business to advance Freestyle music. They are in the business to make money, and releasing quality freestyle just isn't the way to do that. Right now the public wants other types of music; apparently their cheesy compilations sell pretty well since I see them high on the charts usually.

SPG's release quality has never been something to write home about. The best songs on the compilations are usually the ones produced by labels other than Ti Amo.

Elissa isn't a true representative of freestyle, she's a vocalist who sings whatever her label tells her to sing. After the low quality of FH5, I think it's safe to say that we shouldn't expect any quality freestyle releases by SPG. I think ClubFreestyle needs to show some love to Planet Freestyle. Planet Freestyle is bringing fresh new material to the genre.

why freestyle is not as respected

hey guys,
I'm glad someone brought up this topic. I'm going to make this short and sweet. #1 reason is downloads-because freestyle is not so big a lot of artists pay for their production and good production ranges from $2000-$5000. If an artist is paying that sort of money for production and is not making that money back from cd sales or shows ect, they will be hesitant to make new songs or try new styles of freestyle. I don't know if anyone saw me perform at the Docks on oct 3 but I had my best friend that's a rapper perform with me,I'm trying to mix the world of freestyle and the world of hip hop which is very big right now, you might even end up hearing him on one of my upcoming tracks. I think that freestyle artists should be showing their uniqness in their music and in their style, for example now days when ever I make appearances I'm usually in my track suit or track pants, I wanna be comfortable, I'm not trying to look like everyone else, because I'm not everyone else, Im me. #2 There have been freestyle songs that have been played on regular rotation on the radio. My advice is, if you like a freestyle song call and request it or even e-mail Tony to play it, if they get enough requests for a song they will play it eventually. #3 The reason hip hop and r&B is so big right now is because people are requesting the songs and they keep coming out with new material constantly because they are able to make a living off their music, even though downloads still exist for these artists as well, when they have a concert thousands show up and buy their tickets. This allows them to be more versitile and constant with their music. So the answer is not that one person can make a difference, it has to be everybody as a team. If at least the people that post on this site didn't download(I don't know if u do, I'm just saying hypathetically) it would improve the cd sales enough that we can keep releasing new songs with new flavours more frequently. This was supposed to be short but I guess I couldn't help myself.

Lots of love,

Dimi

Dimi,
I understand that good production usually costs a lot of money, and I give mad props to all freestyle artists who continue to put out quality material. But I haven't seen any evidence that would enable freestyle artists to accuse downloaders of eroding their profits. Hip-hop is downloaded far more frequently than freestyle (just do a search on Kazaa) yet you don't see hip-hop music going under. In fact, many freestyle songs are impossible to find on downloading services. Rather than pointing the finger at downloaders, I think us freestyle fanatics need to locate the true source of the problem. I would guess that it is most likely the lack of distribution and promotion of new freestyle material. Of course, this is the chicken-and-egg problem, where without the existing fanbase to purchase and support the music, the labels don't have the capital necessary to secure distribution and promotion deals.

One important thing to realize is that there's no reason why freestyle won't continue to exist as it has, in the "underground", much like many other subgenres of music. It's up to the fans to keep the music alive. And it's up to the masses to decide whether they want to elevate freestyle to the popularity it once enjoyed. "Crossover" songs are one way to reach out to the masses. Linking freestyle and hip-hop is not far off, as the two genres have been brothers since the beginning. Listen to some early freestyle records and you'll hear rapping.

As for downloading, I typically only download songs if they are unavailable or difficult to purchase. Sometimes I'll download a song and if I like it, I'll purchase the album. Keep in mind that people who download music aren't usually the ones who would've bought the CD in the first place, and in the case of freestyle where it is not very well-known, people who download may in fact be exposed to a form of new music and will start buying the CDs. Some of my first exposure to freestyle was from Collage and Rockell songs I downloaded many years ago. Now if you check my CD collection I've got five CD's from Collage and a couple from Rockell. lol

Peace to all freestylers
Matt

Great discussion, lets keep on it. We can shake it up
and blow it up but always treat our key players in freestyle
with the utmost respect.

Because it is them who have the power to make our ideas
come true. Advise them on your opinion they are reading
they are here with you now as you post. Encourage them
to give you feedback by posting. The worst thing we can
do is post childish remarks which cause them to shy
away from their fan base and not work with their fan
base. We can make this happen in a Big Way if we
all are professional and truly dedicated to bringing
freestyle to the top as it once was.

Keep the peace in freestyle.

freestyle music

Hey guys,
I give props to those of you who download to get a feel of the song or artist and then go out and buy it. Its all of the elements that have been mentioned that we need to work on so that freestyle wont be so much of an underground thing anymore. Tarp is right freestyle and hip hop are not that far apart if you look at the rap and the freestyle that was around back in the day. Like I said before, downloads effect everyone and the reason hip hop artists are making the money that they're making is off of concerts mostly, and other things but if downloading wasn't around the music scene would be a lot better off. Actually I heard that now in the states people that have over 200 songs downloaded, are getting sued. Right now in Canada people are going to start getting warning letters, this is what I've heared. Sorry guys I gotta get going.

Thanks for all the support!!!

Dimi

Hey Dimi....I was one of the fortunate ones at the Docks on the 3rd....Your performance was really good! (And I loveeddd your jacket...lol) ...
but the rap section added was really creative..... :cheer

Personally I don't download.....
1--This may sound stupid, but every time (in the past) where i downloaded a music program, I would sooo many viruses...lol....ones that would f*ck up my computer, so....I just purchased my own for school only, and its less stressful that way. lol

and 2--I find that the only way to make more music, is to keep buying it....hey, everyone needs money to support themselves/family, to put food on the table, etc...which is common sense!

Everyone has their own opinion on this topic I guess...🙂

Wow everyone seems to be posting up in this one lol...thanks all for your opinions...well as for Dimi's request suggestion...I have emailed and got nothing much out of it...if a song is not on rotation it seems impossible to get it on rotation

gina - you mentioned it's impossible to get a song on rotation if it isn't already. i know on z103.5 if a freestyle song's requested loads of times on the frenzy, it may eventually reach regular radio rotation. but what about stations with no frenzy, how does that work ?

not sure....but most of the songs they used to play on the frenzy a few yrs back when it was mostly freestyle were rarelly played during the day...

I would recommend reading up on this issue more. I suggest slashdot.org and kuro5hin.org discussion forums for insightful links to editorials and news articles on the RIAA's fight against downloaders. It becomes apparent that downloading is NOT the problem causing CD sales to plummet, rather it is high prices and low quality. I tend to lose respect for artists who blame downloaders. Above all, we should be making freestyle music FOR THE LOVE OF THE MUSIC.

By the way guys, I want you all the hear my latest beat. It's posted at http://tarp.worldserve.net/remix/Dj_Tarp-Change_My_Love_Inst.mp3

Download all you want. LOL.

I think easy access to down loads has a small part in it...but the price for cds especially imports (which is what most dance music is considered) is insanely hi and lately not that great in quality as was said above...I don't understand why cds by SPG are like $20 they should be really cheap since they are from Canada :crap

By the way, I'm gonna drop by SPG's offices next time I'm in Toronto.... I want my money back for FH4, it doesn't work in my new Sony CD changer! Idiots used "copy protection" which doesn't let me listen to the freaking CD.

Yeah and I wanna know why when I bought the cd I got Rockell's "What You Did To Me" but when I got the box set it was not on FHV4 so basically a song is missing...it aint even on the track listings wtf is that shyt about

I think SPG and Rockell must've had a falling out. Remember she didn't show up for one of those concerts, I forget which one. Tony Monaco stopped playing her on the frenzy too.

You should get DJ X's Club Experience vol. 2 seriously. It's so good.

Rockell still plays on the frenzy. I hear her all the time.

A lot of artists are "rarelly" played on 103 and if you do hear them it's cuz it's been requested

FYI, Rockell has no affiliation with SPG. In Canada, just like the US., her Top 10 national singles under the Robbins entertainment label ("In a dream" and "I Fell in Love") along with the two albums were serviced by BMG.
