Ok we all know it's a fact that freestyle is at an extreme low point in Canada...now if we can all list a couple reasons why (plz people try and be a bit civil lol) it would be appreciated...JackG wants us to try and create some hype but I don't really know what to do cuz it's hard to determine the problem...so if we all list some reasons we can sorta analize the situation (i'm sure chica will do some fine analizing lol) and go from there...also we need more Canadian members on the site...any ideas on how we can achieve that?

POST UP!!!

We cannot say the music is not there cuz it is...the radio play is not though...one station...a handful of clubs...the same songs played over and over again ain't helping 🙁

We could start by promoting Odeon's "the retrun of panet freestyle" cd on this site through a button or something. the cd inlay sleeve has a huge logo of www.clubfreestyle.com on it yet no mention on this site at all; come on guys!!! where's the love????. Americans can by the cd for $10.99 directly from www.planetfreestyleonline.com until a US and european distribution deal currently in discussion comes through.

It has not been a weak year in freestyle. Au contraire, just cause the ti amo tracks were weak; doesn't mean everything else was. Freestyle in Canada is not all about SPG!.

#1) Why wasn't the Tycoon/Sony Music Canada mega hit "Audrey-I Know (DJ Pezz DRC Mix)" pushed by the frenzy and Z103?; it was the year's truly and ONLY national freestyle single in Canada; getting airplay on MC Mario, nationwide radio and satellite; and it is a SONY baby!

I can go on and on but let's start with question #1. But as a treaser to #2, why weren't kathy phillips and freda added to the invasion? and #3, why are the return of planet freestyle tracks, 100% canadian and quality tracks from production ot instrumentals hardly promoted by the few that claim to advance the cause of freestyle in the GTA? andthe the #4 teaser: ODeon records and MC MArio truly pushed their products nationwide; u go to HMV in frickin regina and the return of planet freestyle is there! Why isn't the SPG produicts promoted and serviced outdside of the GTA; blame low sales on downloading, that is the biggest BS I keep hearing over and over. None of the radios and record pools got "Better than you"; I say that is poor management and promotion! wakie wakie!!!!

Unlike what is perceived, 2003 was one of the better years for freestyle in Canada; unless we stay focused on the GTA only. Even then,12000 came out to see Joee and Stevie B at the rush. Just because the return of Planet freestyle is not an SPG distributed product doesn't not mean it is not THE CD OF THE DECADE so far IMO. No cheeze on that one! Indie cds take time to sell and its glory days are well into the later part of 2004. Let's see some exposure here on this site as well. Unless it is all baout the bucks?

2003 has seen more singles on the radio than 2002; last year it was about Primadonna, Sweet TB and Ceres. The selection was just as great and homegrown this year. And for the 5 people that call the frenzy line on Sundays in between 15 minutes of commercials and 10 minutes of yacking, they certainly do not represent the national industry activity or the so called charts of that show; for this year anyway. Such a shame.

That's another reason why I think Freestyle is so weak...it seems to be all about SPG and Ti Amo here in Canada and all the artists and songs created/produces and supported by these 2 labels...funny how artist that are and were with Ti Amo are on the "Return Of Planet Freestyle" cd...things that make you go hmmmmmmmmm

I couldn't agree with you more Civic...

Im going to be the first to admit...i think I have 99% of Ti Amo CD's in the past....but Ti Amo and SPG don't rule the universe...like they think they do....(i could say more but....dont wanna get into trouble)

Ive ALWAYS been supporting Planet Freestyle....and i will continue to do so....no matter what people say, no matter if it gets radio airplay...Chris Phillips is the KING...(to me) lol

Plus....lately the artists that are coming out from Ti Amo suck...(freestyle or not, but who's Brad Machado? Another Shawn Desman wannabe?)

my two cents...i could ramble alot more on this, though.

I think the favoritism with Ti Amo and SPG (cds and artists) is doing the most harm to the current freestyle scene here in Toronto

I dunno who Brad is but won't be too surprised if he were probably a student of some vocal talent workshop, ahem, school, that charges a hefty fee to get on an SPG compilation with intelligent, well thought of, radio quality verses like "ladadidadaram damdadadadadidaram".

Yup most artists are products of this "skool" but anyways :rolleyes

yeah very good and valid point there ladies... and bassbump...

to me personally what was a shocker is that his year's INVASION didn't have any freestyle acts. Both Tony and Elissa tried defending their point to me... i mean how ironic, both of them stand as symbols for freestyle in Toronto in the eyes of thousands of people... Tony, a great radio personality, the only freestyle hsow host in Canada (well Toronto for sure lol)... and Elissa, our one of the most recognized freestyle talents... so they not see the problem with the picture?? If they both don't fight for freestyle.. what's the chance of it surviving and getting played on the radio?

Invasion, to me, was something that brought people together... people who liked euro, found out about freestyle... Some people behind us were listening to Kathy Phillips sing and they were like "Hey she's not bad!!".. i mean from here they'll be interested in her, listen to her music, etc. Now that freestyle is no longer in a line up... what's the chance we'll be hearing it on the radio? Other than the FRENZY of course.. which is just once a week for one hour only 🙁

We gotta push freestyle... have more freestyle shows... more freestyle compilations.

The Freestyle Madness passed couple of weeks back... other than you and me guys, who knew about it? Some, or thaer most of my friends who went to the previous Invasions and some that went to the SUmmer Rush, had noooo idea what that event was all about... There is not enough of goddamn advertisement for anyone who isn't SPG or Ti Amo to have a chance in this industry...
I'll be back to finish my point.. cos I was about to start pointing fingers.. I don't want this thread to be removed, cos it's a good topic.

This thread won't be removed and will remain as a sticky for a while so no worries 🙂
Also I just find the Frenzy a joke these days...it goes back to the favoritism all you hear is Stevie B, Debbie Deb, Joee, Elissa, Rockelle and Lil Suzy and of course Diamond Girl by Nice n Wild that's it...theres so much more to it then just that

wow i wish they played that.. all i hear is freestyle remixed euro songs on frenzy...

i had to stop myself too. lol

I would love to say more...but I shouldn't really...

I know we all want to say more but don't wanna start something that blows up...this is just a discussion though not a debate...I think there is a great potential for Freestyle here in Toronto if we can figure out what's holding it back
Ok another reason the lack of cds available here...Ceres has a cd...she was huge here in Canada...why was her cd never available to us here in Canada and North America...other cds too Sharyn Macern's cd, Freeze's cd, and then the old skool artists...these cds are not available up here...ever hear of the term "out of sight out of mind" I think that's what's happening here :crap

Hmmmmm somebody looking for trouble??

Simple fact of the matter, currently Z103.5 is the only station playing freestyle in Toronto without any pressure anywhere to be seen in the near future from any competitors, SO , Z103 dictates what they basically play (or pretty much what Tony Monaco) decides to play that particular day.

Fantastic mixes--not particularly so,
Pretty much same, over-repeated playlist--yes
Euro/dance songs with a Freestyle loop in the background-- Whats up with that?

The Sunday afternoon freestyle show, basically should delve (dive) a little deeper in more "classic" freestyle by artists that dont get a lot of airplay, and what I mean by "classic" isn't that same track by Stevie.B over and over again.

Artists such as : Pure Pleasure, LAW, Luis Damon, Bobby Delante, D'Zyre, Latin Boyz, Nyasia :yeey ,Clear Touch, Expose, Trinere, Soave, N.V, Charlie Rock.

The list goes on and on. Why don't they shed some of the freestyle spotlight to some of the above mentioned singers.

Freestyle Fridays live from Z103 turn into " Lets play 4 freestyle tracks back-to-back then switch into R&B Fridays" come on whats the deal with that!!

Those of you that have been regulars on the Canadian Freestyle forum here on "CF" know that I have a few particularities with what Z103 played in the past , and what certain "On air personality DJ" tends to "borrow" certain mixes and claim them to be his own.

You have to remember one thing my CF kiddies, the freestyle they play caters to a younger listening "market", so Z might not take a chance playing "older" Freestyle tracks that old goats like me remember being played in "actual" Freestyle club nights like "Misty's" nightclub in the Sheraton Hotel (airport road)for the "Sunday Free-for-all-Freestyle Nights".

We can bitch and moan all we like, having 1 hour a week for a freestyle show, minus the 100 or so ads in between leaves us like 35 minutes of actual airtime of tunes we like.

Threat of competition builds a multi-tude of variety for the listener, since there's only one dance station in Toronto, we have to look elsewhere for our Freestyle fulfilment.

But hey thats just my 2 cents. :sadsmile

oh yeah i definately agree with you spyboy...

free for all freestyle sundays... must have been nice...

Nicely said Spyboy 🙂

Well the comment that was made that this was a weak year for freestyle is another major factor that's bringing freestyle down...2 cds were released here in Canada well 3 with the Stevie B one and 4 when you count the up and coming Joee release...that ain't bad considering usually it's just 1 being the Freestyle Heaven cd of that year...now lets factor in the American Cds that were released this year...Johnny O released one, the 360 tour cd thats 2, Freeze released an amazing cd this year so that thats a thirds, the bad boy joe vol4 is a forth and thats all I can think of off the top of my head I'm sure there's more...that's not a bad year for freestyle actually I think that's actually pretty good...

ok #1 a cd released of all the songs of stevie b's old cd's with one new 2003 remix of an old song, does not count as a cd release. It's called RECYCLING!!!

#2 there is no demand for fs music on other radio stations and certain record labels seem to have the ear of a certain radio persoanlity on sundays between 5-6. I was actually shocked about a comment made about Freda before he played her song. It was unnecessary and malicious. But whatever.

#3 Elissa is not the queen of freestyle. Yes she has put out hits, but recently it's been cover songs or latin flavoured music and not of the freestyle persuasion. All of which do not a freestyle hit make. She can either branch out and make music she finds more marketable and profitable which is fine, but then you can't keep touting yourself as a freestyle leader. Leaders innovate in their own field.

#4 While I am not happy with the lack of variety on the frenzy on sundays, I can understand the point of trying to cater to all, having to follow crtc regulations on content and playing music to beat out competing stations. Here's a thought though, give listeners, ESPECIALLY the younger ones, some credit. Don't decide what will and won't get them going. Play the old stuff. You'd be surprised how much they like it. In fact, why be surprised? The old stuff is where the new stuff evolved from. Can we get a clue?

I'll admit I made the same mistake till my 15 year old brother was bringing me old freestyle stuff and I was like WHOA where'd you get that? You know where he got it? Off the net. And he asked me why he can't find any old school stuff in stores now. If we decide for people what they can listen to it eliminates the choice for them. What's worse, it also eliminates any chance of them proving you wrong. So you can keep playing what you think people want or you can play a little of everything and let the people dictate what they want.

wow she hasn't been here in like forever...but hit it right on 🙂
