What do you thing qualifies as the 1st ever freestyle song? I say it is a toss up between One More Shot, I.O.U., and Play At Your Own Risk...they all came out in 1982, produced by John Robie (and Authur Baker except for One More Shot) and they all have the essential elements that make up freestyle. I'm not sure why Planet Rock gets credit so often. It's missing the all important love theme. Also, it did not introduce electro dance/club.....it introduced electro funk...(or did Planet Patrol???)....big difference. I think the confusement is due to Debbie Deb using that beat for When I Hear Music....and she is one of the big originals. Well, let's hear everyone else's opinion...

well i never really considered "one more shot" or "i.o.u." to be freestyle. more kind of an electro-disco sound to me. so i would have to say "play at your own risk".

i always thought that

"let the music play"
"i wonder if i take you home"
"please don't go"

were tha 1st freestyle records but those were in '84. so i guess planet patrol did come out before them. but i think afrika bambaataa started it off though. i think it took many different peeps to create freestyle (not just him). but his beats for "planet rock" & "looking for the perfect beat" were tha base beats for most of tha freestyle songs that came out of tha 80's. and "planet rock" is still being used to this day! maybe a little TOO much! but i think he's responsible as far as tha music goes. but i think peeps like planet patrol, shannon, & nayobe are tha ones responsible for tha actual freestyle (beats, vocals, style).

Thats simple

Nayobe with her song "Please Don't go" was the first freestyle and anyone in the industry will tell you the same.

Planet Patrol were Electro Funk, not freestyle now a days they consider it freestyle but is not.

And AEIOU by Freeze is more Nuwave Dance, could be consider Freestyle but I don't know......

Hope that helps😉

i agree with you on the first 2, ALEX, but "AEIOU" being "new wave" is a tough one to prove. it was pure dance, late disco. i would put it up there with "funky town", not "blondie".

"let the music play" came out in '83 😛

and a song doesn't have to have a "love theme" to be freestyle...

yo..

Anyone listened to HASHIM rmx by JOHNNY VICIOUS' trance mix? It's been out i dont know how long but i got it the other day and its bangin'...laterssss,

da~EM..

Victor_S, you failed to mention that NELSON "FFWD" CRUZ helped out with the SHANNON song "LET THE MUSIC PLAY"........so, you may have to change your title to "ALMOST HUGE FREESTYLE FAN"!!! 🙂

"LET THE MUSIC PLAY" was 1984, no?

No (en ingles), Let the Music Play was made in 1983.

Big Marc lately Johnny Vicious has been remixing very old freestyle music. I think he desperately wants freestyle to come back so maybe that is the reason why he is giving it his 2000 touch. He also did a long remix to "let the Music Play" by Shannon in a Maxi Single entitled "Shannon the Lost Mixes".

Kenny... being a HUGH freestyle fan dosent mean that you have to know every single thing.

al naafyish- hashim [which also brought alot of freestyle influence.(not many people know that.)], and shannon- let the music play were the most successful and recognizable so I guess that would truly make these the first freestyle tunes. Both were released in "83".

i think Victor's right peoples!

its gotta be a toss up between Nayobe & Shannon. and if Shannon came out first, then i guess she's tha answer to this question! peace!

Mark

what a regular questio?n

The 1st Latin Hip-Hop track is "Let the music play"(1983) by Shannon.

If you consider Electro Funk as part of Freestyle:

The 1st Freestyle song is "Planet Rock" (1982) by Afrika Bambaataa.

Just my opinion...

Francis

Well, I STILL say it is a toss up betwwen One More Shot and I.O.U. As I said, it contains ALL the essentials of freestyle as we know and love it. It doesn't contain one or two. And freestyle, as we know it to be, does need a love theme to be just that. Remember, the question was NOT which songs provided certain elements that helped to lead up to our freestyle. Those two songs came out in 82' and contains everything. That's just my opinion though!!! :0)

Which was the 1st ever Freestyle song Part 2

Hi,

Everybody seems to camp on his own position, and won't see the truth. You will be agreed with me if each of you takes the original pressing of each records that you mentioned.

So, the 1st ever Freestyle song will be:

The release year:

1982: "Planet Rock" Afrika Bambaataa [Tommy Boy Music]
1983: "Let the music play" Shannon [Emergency]
1983: "I.O.U." Freeze [Criminal records and Streetwise records]
1984: "Please don't go" Nayobe [Fever records]
1984: "One more shot" Next Plateau records]

Personally, I have a small doubt between Shannon and Freeze for the second place!

Do we have some ancestors on this board that could answer to this question for once! It will be interesting to see somebody who possesses some dance magazines concerning the years 1982, 1983 and 1984 (some Charts, reviews at the time…etc).
I was a teen and I don't remember of everything, to be honest with you!

An another thing, it's absolutely right that "Let the music play" ain't Latin sound! So what? Many Latin Hip-Hop songs don't sound automatically Latin…but they are nevertheless considered as Latin Hip-Hop tracks. Anyway, what do you mean when you're talking about Latin? Your remark is too vague! Are you trying to break down the word "Latin Hip-Hop" or do you think that only the Latino people can do this music? I will be extremely interested to see your response.

But anyway, each time I saw some posts about this topic, everybody has his own definition of Freestyle…very difficult to advance in the discussion and to have a serious dialogue! What do you think?

No offense…once again, it's my opinion…and believe me I say that kindly. So, it is not necessary to respond spitefully to my post. I'm not attacking anyone, alright?

Peace.

Francis
