Freestyle lives

Many people that say Freestyle died in 1992 are not paying attention to the new school artists like Rockell, Jocelyn Enriquez, La Rissa, Synthia Figueroa etc. They all started a revival in the late 90's and we have to keep it going in this new decade. we have to buy and support new artists. My album has 3 Freestyle Tracks on it you can check it out at www.RJAMPRODUCTIONS.com. It has been getting play on Latin stations like Latino mix 105.9FM. top twenty in record pool charts and top 5 on internet sites like soundclick. There is also a new album by johnny O. I also have artists on stand by who want to record freestyle but may have to record Salsa or Trance if no one is interested in buying freestyle music. We all need to show support for the new artists.

I haven't spoken much on the subject lately, but here goes...I agree totally with RhythmFaktor, cafreestyler, and R-JAM. PEOPLE MUST SUPPORT THE NEW SCHOOL. Over here on the west coast freestyle was alive and well with artists like Angelina, Buffy, Jocelyn Enriquez, Rosalinda, Sharyn Maceren, Jossette, and others. Even some of the newer artists like Malyssa, Christina Marie, and Natalise have had some radio airplay. It is a completely different story over here. When I worked at dance station Power 105.5 in Sacramento, we had lots of requests for new and old school. But I think the people on this site do not represent the average listener (at least in other parts of the country). I can tell you most of the songs people mention on here as there favorites, most people have never heard of before in my area, and I'm sure in many others. The requests I was getting (besides the new school), were well known artists like Johnny O, Cynthia, Lil Suzy, Debbie Deb, Nice and Wild, George Lamond, Collage, Freestyle ("Don't Stop The Rock"), Connie, etc. You guys have it different in New York since KTU has played freestyle while many other stations have quit, so I can understand if you are tired of hearing the same old songs. But you (not everyone, but many) do seem too unwilling to accept the new school sound.
Here is the problem... radio isn't going to be playing old school sounding freestyle unless it is an old song by a big artist that was popular years ago (i.e. Cynthia, Lil Suzy). I do believe an old school sounding song will OCCASIONALLY have the chance to become popular, but I don't believe the people in radio believe that (many people runnning dance stations today don't know much about the music they play anyway). So I don't see a big likelyhood of the old sound coming back (though again, some songs could do well if given the chance...for example we played "No One Knows" by Susan Santiago and for a couple weeks it had more requests than the nationwide dance hits "Sandstorm" by Darude and "I'll Fly With You" by Gigi D'Agostino. But we were probably the only station that had the freedom to play a 5 or 6 year old song that know one hear ever heard of. The dance radio stations that exist now are more likely to play the newer, more progressive sound if they play any freestyle. So it's up to the fans to see if they can embrace the new sound which was already embraced in other parts of the country.

Wow Club girl two thumbs up to you on looking out for us new freestyle artist. Your right, if the fans dont give us a chance how can we keep freestyle alive? As a new freestyle artist we have to mix the new with the old so we can keep it rolling. And your right by calling e-mailing etc. it would help a great deal.

Let's face facts, if "FREESTYLE" is really dead, then no one wil go to see Johnny O this friday nor will they go to see STEVIE B next Friday, right?

If freestyle is dead, how come 7,000 + people showed up for the Stevie B/Lisa Lisa/Juddy Torres/Alvendia concert at Great America in California last summer?

i have to address this "death of freestyle crap!"

Nice discussion.
I busted my ass for the last 2 years

to this organization for everyone here.

You know what gets me- people always
complaining... NEVER taking action.

I dont want to hear any fkin misery.
If you cant enjoy freestyle music for what
it is - then don't.

If some of you want to be friggin pissed at me for
saying this - I dont really give a shit.

You want to go cry on the other sites about
JackG and how mean he is - I dont and never
did Give a Rats Ass.

Frankly, I am sick of all the whining.

PEACE

Dayum right, Jack G!!!

I'm sorry, but i have to say something about this "Death of Freestyle" business. This is what i truly feel.
Yes, it is true that freestyle music is not mainstream pop anymore, BUT, there is still a scattered fan base out there for it. Last sunday night wasnt the greatest turnout for a freesyle mega concert either, but you just dont give up and say, oh, well, its the death of freestyle. lets just pack it up and go home cryin. what kinda bullcrap is that!!! Let's understand something, i havent seen many club owners that will do a freestyle event on a saturday night at a time of year when the city clubs are busier. Let's examine the 3 blis concerts. Me and a lot of others didnt have off Martin luther king or presidents day. And guess where half the world was last weekend, the NJ shore or the hamptons or anywhere but NYC. Two people i know that are die hard freestyle fans from this site were in vegas and the nj shore. You cant expect 1000 people on nights like this. There were still about 300 to 400 peeps in there sunday. That would be a decent crowd at any smaller club. The first 2 blis concerts had more people for sure.

Maybe what some clubs should do is mix the acts and not make it just a freestyle night. Maybe you can have cynthia or fascination and another artist from today's dance like amber, just to get another kind of dance music crowd in the club. To me amber's songs are good modern day dance tracks and they sound something like freestyle with the fast random drum beats and the sexy vocals!!!

You wanna know why alot of freestyle fans dont make it out to the clubs?? Think about the avg age of the classic freestyle fan. They are probably anywhere from 25-35, got small kids at home and too many other things to worry about. Who the hell has time to stay out to 4am anymore, BUT how do i know that they are out there?? Because every time i listen to ktu when they are playin freestyle i hear some guido from strong island or some guidette or boriqua from the bronx or nj sayin, "ohh judy, im just lovin this freestyle".

Listen, all i know is that if we give up, then freestyle will eventually fade out, but this site and its fans and the artists have made a difference these last couple of years in keeping freestyle on the map and exposing it to the younger generation of fans around
15-20 yrs old. I would have never known where half the freestyle events were goin on if it wasn't for this site.

Are you going to tell me that two years, over 200,000 posts!!! and a ton of great freestyle events are for nothing!!! I dont think so!!!
I agree with what people are saying about how freestyle may evolve into a new but somwehat similar sound, but the only people who will invent this sound are the freestyle artists and producers in the studio, and the only way they will keep recording is if we keep supporting them by buying the cd's. But buy it only if you believe in it and it moves you inside like all great freestyle songs do!! I bought the new TKA cd. I liked two of the songs on it and didn't really like the rest, but that doesn't mean im gonna abandon TKA as a fan. I respect their effort. If anyone expected them to match their "TKA's greatest hits" cd, then i got some swamp land to sell ya to build some houses on!!!! lol

If just one of our artists can get "the break" and get some exposure and maybe get a contract with a big label, then they can throw one or two freestyle tracks onto a mainstream record and see how the public reacts to it. But we'll never know unless we keep supporting them in the meantime.

I believe the only way we are gonna pack the clubs for freestyle is by getting the younger crowd in there and exposed to it. I think all freestyle events should be 18 to party. There are alot of younger kids that like it because it's still "cool" music when you put it up against today's dance. You know what i did with the flyers i had for club blis last sunday? I gave them to my younger brother and his friend to post up and throw around Baruch college where they go to school. I put some around s.i. mall. I dont know if it got any more people to go, but i did something!! Even if our efforts reach only one person, it will multiply by word of mouth.

I think that Jack G should make a ton a business cards and give them to the cf members to put out all over when they go out!!! The power of this website can multiply very fast if people know about it.

Now you may disagree with me, you may think im crazy, you may piss on this post, but if you wanna help keep it alive, you can do these few simple things to make a difference:

- support the artists (old and new school) by buying their cd's
- going to freestyle events when you can
- call the radio stations and request old and new school freestyle
- expose the younger generation to freestyle, tell your younger brothers and sisters and their friends.

I dont wanna hear any more of this givin up on freestyle garbage. If you got something to criticize, fine, but offer a suggestion also!!!

Freestyle music is not the only music that i like, but its the only music still to this day that makes me wanna just get up and dance my (_|_) off!!! The true freestyle fans feel it inside. To me, its the only music with passion!!!

If you are a true freestyle fan, just do your part to help keep it alive, thats all i can ask.

I agree with you totally Steve. I've kept my comments about this to myself up to this point only because I didn't really know how to put my thoughts together so that they would make some kind of sense! (I'm a bad writer UGH!!)

Anyway...what you said as well as a few other about spreading the music on to the younger generations...this is what we need to do. I've gotten my godchild into listening to freestyle here lately because that's all I listen to in my vehicle. The radio stations here in New Orleans do not play any type of dance music to speak of. They cater to the masses and in New Orleans thats the Hip Hop crowd. I enjoy Hip Hop tunes...don't get me wrong cuz there are days I'll be going down the street blasting Nas, or Master P or Juvenile! LOL I love the beats...not necessarily the lyrics cuz lord knows...some of them stink! hehe

What makes me feel good is when Amanda, my godchild, get in the truck with me and starts saying...Nanny put on Johnny O or Stevie B or Debbie Deb or Nyasia! 😉

My heart just swells! She's 12 and getting into this music with all her heart! I've had to make copies of my cd's for her! Lord knows they aren't that easy to find anymore but I'm doing what I can here in New Orleans to support freestyle!

Everyone who calls themselves a fan needs to do this and together we can keep it alive regardless of what the nay sayers have to say!

Now then...I hope all of this made some sort of sense! I'm gonna go finish playin catch up on the threads! :stoned

Today at Tower Records, I myself got 8 people to buy Johnny O's new single. I was test listening to it at the singles booth and was grooving and these hot GWU gals asked me what I was listening to. I told them, they too started listening and they too bought the single. If a few hot looking 19 year old white GWU (George Washington Univ.) students from OHIO get hooked on freestyle, somebody is listening. Which means; FREESTYLE LIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Get that Freestyle Dead Sh*t out of here🙄

glad to hear it my fellow cf peeps. i just had to get that off my chest. That Johnny o cd will be in my colleciton very soon also.
and get this, all of Staten island and Seaside Hts (nj shore) will be hearin freestyle blastin out of my '91 coupe de ville all summer long!!!! YEAH BABY!!!!!

Steve..god bless you baby..😉...Your words, hit it right on the nose...LOL
