i agree cutlass with you cutlass!
put that sh*t to rest already...

hey naya you started a trend!i don't think there was anyone who sampled it first besides the original planet rock....was there??
M

yes there was. i started a thread about this quite some time ago, and the results left me very annoyed with this site. im pretty sure i disappeared after that. i just check in once in a while to see whats going on.

to my knowledge the first record to flat out sample planet rock as a beat was
d'atra hicks - sweet talk (ultimix) version
1989
capitol records

the planet rock beat is played out, however still works for some toons.

So what ever happened to the new sound/ Style DJ Cutlass was working on? Did every thing Work out OK?? When can we hear this new dope sound? Im verey curiouse to know where freestyle is headed with thease producers. Im dying to hear this new sound.......Hit Me up!!!!!!

i was listening to songs like "take me in your arms", "i want your love", "i can't live without you", "i've been thinking about you" and it bugs me out to how many people don't consider "planet rock" a freestyle record...considering it's production....lyrically its on another level but i mean the oversampling is honestly crazy i wonder if Baker/Robie get any kind of royalities for people just sampling a few bars!

I love that sound if its used correctly, Planet Rock Dope, But if its thrown on a garbage freestyle song thats not planet rocks fault (the loop).

Hey Lex, From what I understand....Theres no royalties goin to any of the poneers of the planet rock sound.

young megatron....well i guess those who decided that they should get clearance ex. "Treasure Of My Heart" by Spanish Fly. so apparently from that specific record they must get some royalty, but I wonder if it's going straight to Warner Bros since they have all the rights to Tommy Boy back catalog...hmmm

What I mean is ...who ever came up with the sound..KRAFTWERK....AFRIKA BAMBATA....Has not recieved a dime....thats what i heard....anyone else using the loop is different....drum loops can be recycled by law unlike melody. Somthin like that.

I was a big fan of the Planet beat way back when I started producin but I agree, every damn song had some form of it and they all sounded the same. Granted I had to do what people paid me to do but still. I will only use it when I have to. Most of my stuff now is so different I can get away without using it.

Nyasia, which version had the planet beat? I have the 12" and none of the versions on there are that upbeat? Or am I just losing it? Actually don't answer that one 😉

All in all I say if your shit sounds phat and you can tweak the sample enough, go for it.

That's my 2 cents.

I agree with it being waaaay over used and played out, but damn....there's just something about that beat. I can't get enough of it. I try to stay away from it during freestyle production all though I did use it in Jessica Marie's "More Than Friends". I tried multiple beats on that track but the Planet Rock beat was the only beat that really worked on that track.

I've always been a huge fan of early electro and breakin' music all together so you can see why I got alot of love for that beat. I still use it sometimes in a breakdown on an electro or a breakbeat track. You can hear how I used it on "Audio Beatdown" on my site. www.petezavala.com

(Planet) Rock on! :fkinaman

Just try to be more creative when you use it.

we've already talked bout this........ my positions the same...... if its used correctly & it works then go for it...... its a slammin beat & a great way to get a track started.... if it's just the planet rock beat with a vox then no, but if its produced well & it's a good song then its cool.... 🙂

I Only dug this old thread back up cause i wanna know the information above......I couldnt find Frankie Cutlass's old thread any whare...the one were he said he has the hot new sound and will be showing us samples soon.

I didnt really want to talk about Planet Rock eaither, But I do wanna hear this new sound. Any Info? Any One? Wasnt there like a web site that went up for "Urban Dance" ? Is that site still around?

I think the use of the Planet Rock beat is what put a lot of hard hitting freestyle tracks on the map meaning songs that had a great deal of radio play or least around the Bay area radio stations. Here's why.......... producers who knew that they were doing such as those behind tracks such as: Lil Suzy "Take me in your arms" Collage "I'll be loving you" Jocelyn Enriquez "Thinking about you" Stevie B. "Funky Melody" Joee "Died in your arms" Josette "In a dream" really laced it down with some tight game , but on the other hand there are some other producers out there that misuse this sample (wacked production)or overuse it and flush this GEM down the toilet, there are too many to list, but then again...... any song that can be mixed with the planet rock beat is straight up Freestyle influence, so it's a question whether the person behind the art can form it into some shit that people can feel 😉 This beat is here to say, but its an endangered speci! Real talk!

Keep the beat going as long as they are like the songs mentioned above... (with the exception of Josette...Rockell was way better produced and better vocals...imo).

i love that beat so much i am going to use it for my new single

WITH ALL DUE RESPECT TO EVERY ONE WHO USED THAT PLANET ROCK SAMPLE, ON THE REAL! IF SOMEBODY ELSE USES THAT FREAKING SAMPLE AGAIN, I'M GOING TO THROW UP!LOL , COME ON FREESTYLE HEADS/ PRODUCERS/ARTISTES, THAT'S WHY THIS TOP CEO'S FROM THIS RECORD COMPANY’S/ECT, ANT REALLY FEELING DANCE MUSIC THIS DAYS, CAUSE EVERY TIME SOMEONE COMES OUT WITH A HOT SINGLE, ABOUT 9 OTHER SINGLE'S COMES OUT AND THERE ALL SOUND THE FREAKING SAME,LOL . PRODUCES NEED TO START GETTING MORE CREATIVE AND ORIGINAL WITH THE MUSIC (4 REAL), AND I’M NOT SAYING TO GO DO, R & B, HOUSE OR RAP MUSIC, JUST DO ORIGINAL FREESTYLE MUSIC. ONCE THAT HAPPENS I’M TELLING YOU, WE ALL ARE GOING TO START SEEN BETTER DAYS FOR FREESTYLE MUSIC.

P.S LOOK OUT FOR THAT GEORGE LAMOND ALBUM COMING OUT IN THE NEAR FUTURE, I HEARD THREE JOINTS OF THAT ALBUM (IS SICK). :georgelam

Totally agree. Freestyle can also be Lisa Lisa and Brenda K. and Sa-Fire as well-C-Bank, Amoretto, Monet, Nayobe. Hell, it can have reggae, rap, rock. We do need to step it up a notch. Rap/rock are so successful because they always change up their sound every five to 8 years. House-from Chicago soul to Deep to Latin to Tribal to Disco. Come on, freestyle is probably the best form of dance music with its creativeness. We can be more creative if we just unify and take steps "out of the box". That's why many of our old school legends have ventured into new sounds because one of the reasons why was the flood of same-sounding Planet Rock-like records (yes, there are new artists taking a different turn, and we should respect that). It's sad to note that Freestyle in the 80s was more creative than today. There was a real Latin feel, a real Latin hip hop that didn't necessarily associate itself with Planet Rock. It was exciting and major labels were attracted to it, not only because it was new but because it was creatively mainstream-pop.
