Hey all,
How the hell are ya.
Before I aske my question I Feel I have to say, this question is in no way intended to discredit anyone or call thier abilities into question. I feel I needed to make that statement due to all the negetivity reguarding Freestyle Artist.

Well, here goes

I just got Sharyn Maceren's CD "Always Dreaming"
which I'm glad I did.. One song on the Cd titled "I Love To "
was playing and I Thought to myself, DAMN I HEARD THIS BEFORE...
Then it hit me The song's Beat and Tempo has an uncanny sound Which is that of Madonna's "Material Girl". I check the publication and it states she wrote all music and lyrics..???. Is it just me or was this done on purpose. Or is Madonna's song sampled, Does anyone know? IT'S STILL A COOL TUNE..

You could pretty much say that EVERY song sounds like another. I'm sure Madonna was probably a big influence on Sharyn, but I don't think the resemblance is intentional.

btw, I never really noticed this similarity before. I'll have to listen more closely next time.

my take on this is basically that there are so many songs out there today that one is bound to sound similar to the other.
Yep. Some artists use very similar beats used in other artist's songs. 🙂 I recalled this summer hearing two songs and I was like "man who brought it up first?" lol

I haven't heard it, but I'm almost positive her and the producers sought legal advice before using something that sounds almost similar to Madonna's "Material Girl".

Something similar to this happened with Queen's "Under Pressure" and Vanilla Ice's "Ice Ice Baby".

Hi all,

There aren't any loops of any kind in the songs I produced on Sharyn's album (i.e. from instrument or drum loop CD collections, etc.). I definitely don't need to sample other people's tracks as a basis for my own. I've been doing this long enough to have a couple o' chops. 😀

The melody in "I Love To" is close to "Material Girl" but it's not the same. In fact, I've always thought it was closer to Gary Numan's "Cars" myself. As far as I know, Madonna's producers didn't sample another track for her song either. I don't think this compares to Vanilla Ice's indiscretion, since that was a direct sample of the Queen/Bowie song. There's a big difference between building a full production from scratch which sounds similar to another song, and just sampling someone else's copyrighted recording.

For this song Sharyn's lead line was originally played on the piano and sounded much different, but it worked better as a synth lead even though it became more 80's sounding as a result. The sounds used are probably a large part of the similarity here as well. Ultimately, the song wasn't going to be a single and is just about having fun, so we had no problem taking it in a weird retro "VW ad" direction.

That's not to say there's no Madonna influence in the album, since that's obvious. There's also a lot of flavor from Kraftwerk, New Order, Kylie, current dance music, Freestyle history, my own history, etc.

If you have any questions about the evolution of any of Sharyn's songs, feel free to ask. We always had a distinct vision for each track, and I don't think the process should ever be a mystery.

And I'm glad people are still talking about "Always Dreamin'" while we start working on her second album. :cheers

Material Girl.

Again let me re-state,

This question is in NO-WAY intended to discredit anyone.
I think Sharyn Is an ass kicking artist, I loved the Cd and would definitely purchase all of her works.

To G.G,

I thank you, for taking the time to answer my question and providing us with great Freestyle music.

Hey Ted,

No problem at all! I just want to be sure people know what you already know about Sharyn. 😉
