Well I know we have discussed this topic before but I wanted to touch up on it again. I have noticed a lot of members are opening up even if it is just a little they are opening up lol to trying new things in FS and I know Jack had mentioned adding some things on the sight to expand and bring more attention to Freestyle. Well the other night we were in a conversation and I remembered we had discussed combing freestyle with Hip hop/R&B and to an extent people agreed on how going about it would be, and I also remember people not feeling the idea of Hip hop because it would change it with the language , people even made fun of such artist like Fat Joe and Freestyle etc. In any case the more I thought about it the more I started exploring the idea. I think it could work and bring a lot of attention to Freestyle my reasons for feeling so and hey I could be wrong but that’s why I am posting to get feed back and hopefully we can discuss this without it getting ugly lol. I feel that in order for it to work it would have to take the right Hip-Hop artist to make it work with the right Freestyle artist. Hip hop has incorporated itself with some many other genres and has brought attention to those genres and has even paved the way for other artist to try the same, We have seen Rock and Hip-hop (run dmc/Aerosmith, Eve/Gwen Stephani, Kid Rock, Linkin Park etc etc and of course we have seen Hip Hop and R&B more then work look at how many R&B artist have been made just off of singing hooks. So its like if all these other genres can blow up while using elements of Hip hop why cant Freestyle. Like I said it would take the right Collabos to make it work. It is easy to see what Hip Hop acts could help bring Freestlye that shine it needs the artist I think that could do this are artist such as Eve, Jarule, Nas, (I have thought of more these are just examples lol) why because for one these artist have combined hip hop with different vocal styles and have made it work within FS we have artist ranging from so many different vocal ranges. Lets say Nyasia or Safire do a collabo with Nas people become curious who is singing with Nas who does that voice belong to, when they find out they want to know what they can about the artist and when they look them up there roots will lead them back to Freestyle and people in turn will wonder what Freestyle exactly is its history and how this artist came about. Maybe I am thinking to much but I just wanted to bring the topic back up since everyone has become a little more open minded or at least willing to hear ideas so please post up your feed back thanks J

I happen to agree with you girl, you know we were talking about this the other night. And of course this will also bring in many different opinions, which is all good. Let us hear what you think on this usbject.

Angie, I hear you but Hip Hop is in a class by itself and I don't think we need to use Hip Hop as a stepping stone to boost up Freestyle. What should really happen is that we need to get all the pioneers together in one room; like your Carlos Berrios, Andy Panda, Elis Pacheco, "Little" Louie Vega, Todd Terry, Manny Lehman, Adam Levy, Carlos Rogers, Victor Franco, Myself, Latif, Jerry Salerno, Sal at Fever,Owen "OS" Soba, Tommy Nappi,Tony Moran, Albert, Baby J, John "Gungie" Rivera, J.R., Mickey Garcia, Aldo & Amado Marin, Benji Candelario, Joe Moskowitz, MacQuayle, and a host of others together and create a forum and talk about the industry as a whole. There are years of experince and talent with the names I've mentioned above. From promoters to keyboard players, remixers, producers; you name it. These are the people who have given you great hits that we still listen to today. Those of you have been down with freestyle from day one should know everyone of these people. No disrespect to the up and coming freestyle artists of today but I don't feel that these records that are coming out are creative enough. There is still way too much copying and sampling of other records that were out in the 80's. There is also a lot of bitterness in the freestyle industry that has to be ironed out also. But that's something behind the scenes that I won't get into right now. If we can get this forum together and round up everyone; I think that we have a good chance to blow freestyle back up and make it what it once was. "POWERFUL DANCE MUSIC". Holla Holla !!!!!! nuff said

No doubt smooth I deff hear what you are saying but I feeel Freestyle wont make a big impact if any at all without using other elements dusch as hip-Hop, dance etc I choose to say Hip-hop because everything that it has been combined with has been just about an eye opener for people to check out. Within the industry as you said there is a lot of bitterness and most are not trying to make the Fs albums everyone is looking for cause if it were so we owuld have seen countless other albums been dropped but instead they've gone other routes if any.A lot of artist themselves have decided to go other routes not because they can give the albums people want but because without combining it it isnt going to get the attention everyone seeks. 🙂

smooth I understand what your saying, but I would say 85 % of Hip Hop is samples and loops from old school, even as far back as the 70's.lol so samples and loops isn't a factor here, just that we need better producers to produce them. we need to get a hip hop producer, with a fresstyle producer. Imagine what Neptunes and Carlos Berrios could put together? that I would love to hear.

O.K. Naya, how about James Brown and Victor Franco.
Tony Moran & Lou Rawls
Carlos Berrios & Michael Bolton
Let's be realistic Naya. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to make a Hip Hop record. Our producers are good in the freestyle industry but they must be more creative. Naya you know as well as I know most of the new artists out there display poor and weak vocals therefore the producer must overpower the vocal to make the track work. They shouldn't have to do that. Even the new records that are out now using samples display horrible vocals. This shit has to stop because it's killing us. This is one the main reasons why I cherish all my Naya records. Holla Holla !!!!

hahah ok smoothie!.lol I ain't going to delve into this any more. I still think neptunes and Carlos can tar shit up. and labels have to stop getting any juana and pepe who wnats to sing signed up, just to make a quick buck. on that I agree.

It sounds like a great idea, I don't think it would boost Freestle a whole lot. Hip hop combined with rock works perfect because they are both on the same level. Also, hip hop is more than just a music, it's a culture more of. It's so powerful because hip hop is popular because of it's culture and not just one star. Nas, Eminem is hot, but they aren't the only reason hip hop sells. But it could be a good try though.😉

I beg to differ. Good Hip Hop Tracks is a balance of old, new, and something unique. Tracks aren't always sampled. To be a succesfull producer in the rap game, you still need your niche. Your brand of Hip Hop that does not rely on someone elses originality. That is not easy. Lyrically, you have debate. Yes, you do have artists that aren't as gifted on the mic as some. P.Diddy will never be a Rakim or Nas. However, it goes way past the records and beats. It is the showmanship as well. One cannot have a good track and NOT be able to accompany it with a good stage show. This is where the new generation of Freestyle Artists MUST improve. This is why Hip Hop is where it is. This is why it would be smart to boost visiblity by collabos with Hip Hop Artists. Someone like Safire with Angie Martinez or TKA and Fat Joe. Those would be great tracks because they all have the same levels of energy. Open yourselves!

Mike, if you think that Hip Hop and rock are on the same level you need to stop smoking that shit. Hip Hop is a multi billion dollar industry that continues to grow.

Taz, I hear you. But for you to say Angie Martinez with Safire. What are you shittin me. I like Angie Martinez but as a rapper she sucks. She's a powerful dj on the airwaves but a rapper she's not. She's just doesn't sound right. But as long as she has other rappers on her tracks she will do fairly well because of who she is. Look at J-Lo, she should be J-Rule.

Naya, you know that if everyone stops all the bickering and crying about shit in the past that we could really have something special over here. I think that the above mentioned people have lost interest in freestyle and have moved on to bigger and better things. I know I have; but freestyle will always be in my blood cause I grew up with it. When everyone is ready to step up to the plate and talk serious I'm down. Holla Holla !!

Hey, P Diddy as a Rapper sucks, but he still gets massive Media attention. Angie aint on the same level as P Diddy but she still has a big street following that could help someone in Freestyle. Ja-Rule and J-LO, yea Jen can't sing but THAT TRACK is still hot. I heard it on Funk Flex's mix last night. You see where I am going? Attention, we need mainstream attention. So one must work with those that get some.

I'm Hollering , I'm Hollering,lol.

I feel if we can get a good street beat with a freestyle element. Get someone like a Johnny O, Cynthia, Nyasia, or Safire to sing it with a few rap verses from a Fat Joe, Angie Mar, Sacario, hell even P Diddy. It could work. A catchy hook and melody with Freestyle all over it with a wee bit of street appeal. Yeah, I see it Smooth.

Many of these artist I dont think will even consider coming back. I dont know why but i heard that they were very happy with their new direction

Kenny for the right amount of karma, everyone can be persuaded to do some again, even if only once.

Puff is a pretty decent rapper, anyone who doubts just check his verse on Faith's "Just Burnin'" remix! Him and Freeway just kill it! But you gotta look at how freestyle market itself. Not any artist could just fit into hip hop. I mean Johnny O's not gonna fit in with any rapper I can think of. For the most part I don't think any of the male vocalists could bring it hard enough to sing a hook on a hip hop track. Besides, the majority of hip hop is still predominantly male and they want a hot female to sing over their track. But sexy, u gotta good point. Just look at how many female vocalists were featured singing a hook on a hip hop track and everyone is like "yo who's that". Word circulates through the streets "she can blow, she's kinda fly too". Then the dj's put her on the underground mixtapes. Producers wanna work her lp and before you know she's the next big thing in r&b. It always seemed like the females of freestyle were more hardcore and cutting edge than the men anyway.

But Cynthia on a Neptunes track maybe featuring a few bars from Noreaga or Nas would mos def be a dream track. Also Safire with some Tim & Missy production. She reminds me a little bit of Aaliyah so I think that would be a perfect match. Get Lisette & Foxy Brown on track. These are not just for exposure but I think it would just be a really good musical combinations. The artists would have to match or compliment each other in some way or it ain't gonna fly!
