One of the things that makes NY such a HUGE radio market..or the #1 market is b/c of it's diversity. At any given time you can switch a station & find something you "like"..( i use that term loosely though)

This is exactly the reason why a HUGE station like KTU should be taking risks... & attempting to break new artist. No one say they have to be the innovators of all, BUT once in a while, something catches your ear.... management should give the dj's a little discretion. Somebody made the point of all the music breaking in Florida.. IT's so true.... when i want to find good music dance, trance, house.. even freestyle... i go to the websites from Florida.. Orlando, Miami...& go through thier playlist
There is an artist I found out about down thier called SYLVER.... her dance music is awesome.. I ahve NEVER even heard her stuff mentioned here.... if anyone is curious.. look up some stuff on her.. she'd KILL here in NY.
you want station that takes risks in NY.. go listen to 106.1 BLI or 105.3 from the Long Island (broke Dj. Sammy's heaven, which is a HUGE hit now.. just for example) another artist to watch for...is Genna...she is yet unsigned.. BUT they are playing her song b/c a dj tooka chance & it is requested often aspart of the Sat night patires on both stations.

KTU is a great station.... BUT they are NOT the station WE..here at CF who LOVE freestyle & dance Music, NEED! I have HUGE freestyle collection.. i don't need to put on KTU to hear any freestyle.. I can play what I want in my living room.
And KTU isn't helping freestyle by playing just the old stuff.... they need to take a shot w/ the new stuff too.. maybe if they played & pushed sa fire's "eye's of a stranger", or "can you stand the rain".... Miss Sa fire might have found time in her bust sched. to head to jones beach on the 17th!

who wants to soap box next........

You must have read my mind, phillybronx, because I had the same thoughts running thru my head...both JackG and FreestyleTruth stay that we should be lucky that KTU plays freestyle at all...First, the freestyle is what brought listeners in back in 96, so they would be stupid to eliminate it now...Second, most people have all the songs they play anyway, so it won't be a big loss....most of the new school that i have i purchased because it said freestyle and i took a chance on the cd or cassette....more often than not, i was satisfied with what i bought....at least I can play new school with the old school...i would strongly suggest that KTU split the current 2 hour block between old and new school, cuz I can hear the classics anytime I want

Brklyn - Yes, I know ktu played some new freestyle on Sundays. I listen every Sunday. DJ Johnny Budz played the new stuff in his mixshows. That wasn't KTU playing it. It was Johnny Budz. Answer this question, why is that mixshow no longer on ? Maybe he played too much new stuff that nobody wanted. From what I been told, the Sunday freestle show is doing great with the ratings since they dropped it to 2 hours. Whats that tell ya? People wanna hear the familiar classics.I remember not liking alot of the new freestyle he played. It was mostly cheese. I don't even hear him mix freestlye no more. he plays trance and breakbeats on ktu now, maybe nobody except for people on this website want to hear new freestyle. Its not at a demand no more. I can't even name a new freestyle song i like nowadays. Is there even new freestyle being made still ?

PhillyBronx- Orlando is about the #30 market in the country. Sure they can take risks. Plus KTU is owned by Clear Channel. It is the cheapest, most conservative company in the world. Sounds like you want KTU to cater to you the freestyle fan. Believe me, freestyle isn't at a demand no more. Doesn't sound like any station will be satisfactory to you. You people want freestyle on KTU 24-7. Plus, I never even heard 'eyes of a stranger". What label was it on ? Was it even released ???? did any other stations play it ?

be realistic will ya. now people want a 24-7 freestyle radio station. the only way you'll get anything close to a 'freestyle radio station' is through the internet

A couple of points on KTU...someone mentioned that they only play the HITS.Therefore, they can't play any new freestyle.Since when is playing disco and "ny soul classics" whatever that is, 3X an hour during the day...considered as playing the HITS?KTU might be in the # 1 market but they are NOT the leaders in the market.I think they were # 6 in the ratings last I saw.Orlando might be a samller marker but they are arbitron rated # 1 for dance music in the US.SO that carries some weight. In fact,it wasn't until a certain DJ who worked at 953 party in Orlando switch to KTU that good dance music started being play at KTU.Before that they were playing tired house records and house remixes of r&b songs.By the way the biggest dance record this summer is heaven by dj samy..it just went top ten on billboard...KTU isn't playing it...what a joke.Don't get me wrong..I like KTU but they are better stations out there.

XYKIDD, you are right, there are a few better dance stations out there. But you need to get your facts straight:

--> "NY Soul Classics" and disco classics ARE HITS
--> Orlando Party 95 is NOT arbitron #1 for dance music in the country. Listen to their liner more carefully. They are rated #1 dance IN ORLANDO. Thats because they're the only dance station in Orlando.
--> Vic Latino has NO say in the music that gets played. He's an on air jock. Music Directors select the music.

Party 95 in Orlando plays 10 times more hiphop than KTU. Orlando plays about 2 freestyle songs a day. Freestyle fans on this board would complain about Party than they would KTU, believe me. Out of their Top 6 songs in their playlist, 5 are hiphop !!! Here's the link http://953party.com/music/953party_top_20.html

You are right about DJ Sammy. The Eyra Gail version sucks compared to the DJ Sammy

I'll tell you why...cuz KTU doesn't give a damn anymore, as for people not wanting to hear the new school, tell that to Judy Torres, who has received many calls from people wanting the third hour back....as for ratings being good, I guess it's coming from people that is just being turned on to freestyle now....as for the rest of us, as I, as well as phillybronx stated before, we have a huge collection of classic freestyle..we don't need a two hour block to hear songs that we already have....we don't need to call in to request a song, cause we can do our own freestyle block...as I also stated before, the freestyle is what brought listeners to KTU, and it's really all they have, cuz other radio stations around the dial played the same non freestyle songs as KTU, so you take away all that, what does KTU have left? FREESTYLE. So you would think that they would capitalize on it but they dropped the ball....at this point, it probably would not matter if 103.5 want back to country

P.S. 1) Eyes Of A Stranger did in fact get airplay when the block was three hours
2) It was on the Globestar label
3) Why did it take KTU 3 years to supposedly
figure out that no one wanted to hear new school?

Looks like you want to hear rare, unheard freestyle songs that were never a hit back in the day. You'll never hear that stuff on the radio. Sure it would be nice to hear an old classic they usually don't play, but not the new stuff Johnny Budz used to play which was mostly CHEESE. Unless there is an abundance of new freestyle that I'm not aware of, what do you expect them to play ? Nobody besides people like you who listen to freestyle 24-7 want to hear it. You're better off starting your own internet radio station where you can hear freestyle songs nobody else ever heard before. Not many people have every freestyle song ever made on cd like you. KTU wasn't playing new school for 3 yrs. I only started hearing DJ Johnny Budz play new school for about 1 year. I'm sure the Sunday 11pm slot isn't a priority and they gave it as much of a try as they could. And you're only fooling yourself if you think freestyle is what turned people to ktu in the first place.ROFL

Sorry, some of us have really bad memories.....hmm I recall in February 96 and the months following that KTU playing freestyle almost 24/7 with the occasional disco and amber tracks thrown in.....yes and the summer of that year KTU promoted a freestyle concert at the South Street Seaport for 4 consecutive Thursdays in a row....why? cuz they were just starting and they knew roping in freestyle fans would work, that's why they put freestyle artist at beatstock and hired dj's from the freestyle era, and while Johnny Budz was doing the freestyle for a year, there was still new school being played in regular rotation....If I Had The Chance by Cynthia? 98....In A Dream by Rockell? 98...When Will I C U by TKA was part of the new school block and was played on the regular in 2000.....and as far as hearing rare freestyle, then what is wrong with that? You think KTU is the ONLY radio in NYC that plays Amber, Enrique, Dirty Vegas, Usher, Eminem? WRONG!!! Try PLJ, Z100, 97, even friggin Lite FM...but NONE of those stations play Freestyle, so you would think that KTU would have the brains, or the balls, to play something that would be exclusive to them. If you say I'm wrong that KTU depends on freestyle for listeners, then I challenge them to have a beatstock next year without freestyle artists....lets see how fast they get callers

--> "NY Soul Classics" and disco classics ARE HITS

Correction-they WERE hits like 25 yrs ago.KTU needs to decide if they're going to be a rhythmic oldies station or contemporary one.

--> Orlando Party 95 is NOT arbitron #1 for dance music in the
country.

I'll have to check up on that.Regardless, they are influential in breaking new dance songs even though they are a smaller market. Most overseas acts make Orlando their first or second stop in the US because of the strong support.

--> Vic Latino has NO say in the music that gets played. He's an on air jock. Music Directors select the music.

I'm aware that radio personalities don't select the music. However,I just heard some booty music last night on his show.NY radio never plays booty music..coincidence? I think not.Thats the Florida influence all the way.

This past week I was in NYC. I listened to KTU as much as possible. Whenever I listened, they played, on average, about 2 freestyle songs per hour. I think that's pretty good. What do you guys expect?! And I would say the majority of the music on KTU was dance- not hip hop, pop, or r&b. Yes, most of it was stuff Energy and 95.3 Party were playing months ago, but as stated before, KTU is in the number 1 market- they can't be too aggressive, or they will lose listeners, and that is the last thing KTU wants.

The point is that KTU is a Rhythmic CHR, not a "Pure Dance Channel" or freestyle station. Be glad you have a station that supports dance music, especially freestyle. I live near Philly, where I hear one dance song every 2 hours on the radio (if I'm lucky).

ok, i have to let you know that you tuned in during a time KTU boosts its freestyle music, around BEATSTOCK. as soon as BEATSTOCK is over, they will give us one freestyle song every 4 hours. this only happend around the KTU shows.

Ya gotta let 'em know, Kenny!!!....Chrisz, my point was NEVER that KTU was PURELY a dance/freestyle station....my point was that KTU gave us a hell of a lot more freestyle when they started in 96, and they just tapered off since then, except for the 2 hour block. But for the diehard freestyle fans who have been around since day one of freestyle, we're like "what's the point?" We have these songs that they play, give us some new freestyle that we know exists? How can KTU be sure that a freestyle song won't be successful if they don't play it?

Folks, you have it all backwards. If you're in the # 1 market you ARE suppose to be agressive and take risks with your music. Not the other way around and like someone else said there are other stations in ny that play the pop and r&b records.KTu has to develop a sound that sets them apart from the other stations. When KTU came back on the air they were #1 and 2 in the ratings and they play mad freestyle. So what's the problem with playing freestyle?I think it has to do with the big corporations running the show.I wouldn't be surprised if Clear Channel holds major stocks in some of these big name record labels that they give major air time to.

IF IT WASNT FOR KTU I WOULDA NEVER KNOWN WHAT FREESTYLE IS.... PLAIN AND SIMPLE..... same goes for a lot of the younger people getting into the genre now....

I didn't know new freestyle exists? i dont hear Orlando or any other radio station playing new freestyle

sure KTU played lots of freestyle when they started. what do u want them to do, keep playing the same ol freestyle ? there are only a certain amount of freestyle songs that were/are radio hits
