Is Freestyle officially dead?

Nope...not over...someone will hit hard soon...the problem is that one song may cross over and do well, but others probably won't follow...we seem to get discovered one at a time and not as a group or movement...commercial radio seems satisfied with "token" artists to represent the "whole"...

well, so much harsh talk about "remakes" arent that true. Look at the success SA-FIRE & CYNTHIA had with thier remake. You know what, the internet fans played a large roll in it, too. together, we can all do it!! we can make our music rise to the top.

That will take a miracle my man! God knows freestyle has seen many god-awful acts (about 99.9%) to come out within the last decade! All these new acts who can't sing for shyt, aren't creative or different in any way, make it hard for good, trained, talented singers (Cynthia, Safire, G.L., etc.) to get the shine they deserve.

Finding talented singers to sing freestyle is hard to come accross because its rare that they would want to pursue freestyle music as their career. They would want to go for the gold. Meantime, anybody who wants to sing freestyle can sing freestyle regardless of talent these days. Were lucky to have GL and Cynthia to come sing this music. That's because then, freestyle was a mainstream thing everybody was looking forward to that kind of sound.

I just read the start of the thread

You seriously got to be kidding with asking such a stupid ? I realize you dont know me but if you didnt right now you probably wish you didnt for asking such a ? Please unless you have been frozen in the Alaska for the past 15yrs you should know that Freestyle has never died and till the day I go death or blind and still have a memory it will never die because it lives in the heart not on some radio that transmits whatever is commercialized. I think you get my point. If I were Jack G. I would erase this thread because I dont think you will Ever get a better answer. Peace MYSTIC ONE

If you think its stagnet and stale you need to get a life . I have been part of CF for over a yr now and I have 51 post. Its obvious I got alot of better things to do than sit here on some computer and post 2000 times. (get a life). but anyway if ya dont like it than dont but if ya wana player hate than get some competition because the bag of doritoes is not a foe who can fight back. Life it does exist so dont waste your time posting 2000 times get out there and put the dam music so idiots can hear that its not dead. thank you MYSTIC

The question was in reference to it being "officially" dead....meaning "commercially" dead...The answer is yes to that. It isn't dead in most people's mind and heart though, which is all that really matters in my eyes. I also wouldnt care less if the radio plays it or not...especially since it only plays the old school common stuff. Now, they start playing Tazmania stuff...Artistik...Wiseguy....rare jams, etc....and THEN I'm interested in the radio.

While the song may have had limited success, it still sounded like a reject from the "SO SO DEF BASS ALL-STARS"!!! I do not consider that to be a highpoint for Freestyle music.

Oh Mystic One...I never asked whether or not Freestyle was dead in the literal sense. The question I asked was whether or not it is dead as far as radio and other mainstream outlets (MTV, etc.) are concerned...

Usually I would blast someone for not reading the question as I had written it but I am in a good mood this morning...

I remember agreeing with you on your post Rhoq about "can you stand the rain. But as I listened to it more and more, I felt there was more to it than just the "so so def" beat. It has a dramatic melody, with the music itself, not just the lyrics that asks the question, "can you stand the rain". Kinda like a movie. Very nicely composed. I believe this song would appeal more than just people who listen to freestyle. It also has a mainstream sound. Its versatile. : )

When I first heard that song, I didn't like it all. However, after hearing it a few more times, I liked it alot more (for a remake). I really wish they would do another song though...not a remake and with less of a poppy (is that a word? lol) feel to it. I love both of their voices and Cynthia is my all time favorite. That song came and went too fast too. It disappeared from the radio so quickly. Anyway, it's too damn quiet right now. I wish I owned a radio station and was rich! LOL I'd play some bad a** REAL freestyle and the ratings wouldn't matter...LOL Nothing wrong with dreaming, right?

Anthony, I'd listen to your station for sure! 😉

I have heard "CAN YOU STAND THE RAIN" a few times since my original post about it last Summer. I have listened to it in an attempt to try to like the song and I just can't do it. Aside from the fact that I don't like the music, it is a remake of a song that was perfect the first time it was recorded by New Edition back in 1988...The same goes for "HEAVEN" by Eyra Gail - I don't like her song and I feel that the original version by Bryan Adams was perfect the way it was. What are the artists and producers trying to accomplish by releasing all of these Freestyle versions of old songs from the 1980's? It does nothing but show that Freestyle is no longer creative and/or original...No wonder why Radio won't give us a chance anymore...

Hi Rhoq and everyone, As I sit her and read everyones comments about freestyle being died, I can't help but think its an understatement. Freestyle is alive but everyone needs to let these record labels know what we want to her, not the other way around. I know from experience I would like to here what I want and its not Britiney Spears thats for sure. People please wake up and smell the energy of Freestyle music we really need to work together and help it come to its full force. Angel

well RHOQ, you are definetly from a different era. the song is smash hit right now. you may not like it but as a matter of fact, when i was walking out of COCONUTS yesterday, i overheard 4 kids (16-18) raving on how good the song is and how great it sounded. basically, different strokes for different folks!

what about freestyle EARLY remakes? LATIN RASCALS "DONT LET ME BE MISUNDERSTOOD" was originally done by THE ANIMALS and it was HUGE SUCCESS. but, i bet you dislike that song, because it was a remake, right? how about SWEET SENSATION'S "LOVE CHILD", which was originally done by DIANA ROSS & THE SuPREMES? does it really matter if its a remake? were a decade and a half older now so going back to the 60's & 70's is too far to fetch for a remake so why not "the great 80's?"

Kenny - "CAN YOU STAND THE RAIN" may be a hit in NYC and a few other markets but Philly is not that far away and believe me when I say the only people who have heard the song down here are the few who either bought Sa-Fire's album, copied the CD off of one of their friends or downloaded the song off of the 'net.

As far as "early remakes" go - they were few and far between. I actually like the Freestyle version (Hip-Hop Mix) of "DON'T LET ME BE MISUNDERSTOOD" by The Latin Rascals. However I did not like the album version (the one featured in the video).

"LOVE CHILD" was OK, not great, but far better than most of the Freestyle remakes being made today. I also liked TKA's remake of "YOU ARE THE ONE"...I actually like it better than the original by Karla Reddish.

Remakes were not a problem in the 1980's and early 1990's...You had your occasional remake and usually it turned out well. But from 1994 on - it seems that the Freestyle remakes have been released in record numbers and they are getting increasingly worse. It started with "DIED IN YOUR ARMS" by Intonation feat. Joee (which BTW - I liked) and it took off from there...

FYI - there is a more recent remake that I enjoyed - "DO YOU BELIEVE IN LOVE" by Fred Nice (originally recorded by Huey Lewis & The News). It was featured on the Sliverback Records compilation THE SBP PRODUCT, and for a Progressive Freestyle remake, it was done very well.

well, that just goes to show you why NEW YORK radio stations are the best in the country!!!
