On my cable system, I have Music Choice which is the compertition of DMX. I listen to the dance channel. They like to flash facts about the music and artist. The showed a definition of Freestyle. here it is;

"Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam are looked as the innavators of Freestyle. Which combines Pop and Romantic R&B."

Do you guys agree with that definition?

I think it left too much out. They should have also mentioned TKA of course they were who got the ball rolling. And freestyle was originalally called; Latin Hip Hop or Heart throb. Also, freestyle include hip Hop style break beats.

I think that definition lacks a bit. The definition doesn't take into account the electro origins and it doesn't take into account the new wave influence.

However, I'm sure that the definition is as good as any.

One thing that I've learned is that FREESTYLE MEANS A BUNCH OF DIFFERENT THINGS TO DIFFERENT PEOPLE.

That's why this debate has raged on for years.

Whatever the definition is, I love the music.

Hi

Um, maybe THAT definition is true for Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam as we know it, but it definitely doesn't define Freestyle as a whole. Pop and R & B may be two contributing elements, but what about the Latin characteristics that such songs as "You're The One" and "Sincerely Yours" possess?

You can't blame them for trying, though. 🙂

Hell FKN Nawz , I dont agree with that ROOTY POOO ass Definition! Pop Combined with R&B?!?! And Lisa Lisa starting freestyle is another thing, I cant call that one because I wasnt there but I highly doubt that is true.

hey i am just glad they play freestyle and new artists i may add. i love music choice dance station!!

i have the same thing on my cable and on the party favs and 80s channal i heard music from diamondgirl lisa lisa etc and on the dance station they played the whole mix of one of badboyJoe's freestyle cds i hear more freestyle on tv then i do when i have my radio on.

they left out:

Latin influence
Origin
Hip/Hop/Electro roots

And its Freestyle because it's free in style, or it used to be. Back in the day, the full-length original versions didn't necessarily have 2 complete verses and a defined chorus in between. It was just whatever, it was free.

i'm gonna check out the 80's station, now that you told me they play freestyle on there too.
