From my what I could recall, I started listening to freestyle around the mid 80's but I didn't know it at that time. I was around sevenish, my uncle's girlfriend owned a BMW with a phat stereo system in the back. All she played was freestyle; however, that was something I didn't figure out until much later. All that I could remember was that it was something that I liked.
Around the early and mid 90's, it was a confusing time for me and I found myself listening to punk rock. You have to understand, I was still clueless in terms of freestyle because it wasn't something you hear much about and all they played on the radio was rap or hip-hop music.
Luckily, I had a best friend who had a sister who listened to almost anything and everything. She had a few freestyle cd; off the top of my head, there was Sevie B's 'Funky Melody', Denise, Collage, Spanish Fly, and others. From this point on, I have been listening to freestyle ever since.
For me personally, freestyle brings back my childhood to me and certain songs hold special meaning for me during times in my life. I don't just listen to freestyle, I live it! Well, that's my story, it would be great if everyone told there version.

peace out,
Jen

I started listening to Freestyle with my ears. Then, when I would go to clubs I would listen to Freestyle with my body.

I remember getting my first walkman and I tuned into the radio station and "No Reason to Cry" was playing and I was hooked from then on! to this day that girl remains one of my favorites.

I went to a club in Long Branch(NJ)--Club Paradise and the first song I heard was Notice Me by Sandee.....my husband asked the DJ to play it for me so he could get my attention...i was hooked ever since!!!

I was listening to Lil Suzy " take me in your arms" and its like i fell in love with her words- thats when it began

I remeber being around 5 or 4 it was like 1988 or 1989 and all you hear on the radio is freestyle that was the shit back then. But then it kind of left for a while but I didnt notice it because since I was so young I didn't pay mind to it until about 98 or 99. Ktu was having a concert I think it was the saturday night dance factory live and they advertising it on air. Then they were like starring cynthia, coro, George Lamond ,lil suzy, Giggles and it played a clip from their songs I was like oh shit these songs are so old. It took me back , then I started listening to the saturday Night dance factory "level 2 freestyle free 4 all" and Iv'e been hooked on it ever since.

I started to listen to freestyle music as far back as I can remember, I think I was about 7 or 8 yrs old. I got family who are in the djing business. I would always here my cousin next door playing and mixing freestyle on the weekends. Sometimes I would to my other cousins house and freestyle music would be playing their too. They all were into it back then and so I caught on to it. Now, even though it's not that popular anymore where I live, I'm playing it because it's still something I can relate to in music. I guess you can say, it was all in the family, lol. LONG LIVE FREESTYLE

hmmm

well, I used to roller skate at the oasis (its not there anymore, its a CVS now) when I was young. Maybe 12 or so. Back then "Let the music play" & "I wonder if I take you home" were really big.

I guess I just liked the sound of those songs & as freestyle started to break out, I liked freestyle.

Plus, I was young. I still have the video tape of me singing some cynthia at a talent show hen I was 14.

I guess I grew into it & I will never grow out of it 🙂

I can't really remember when i first listened to freestyle... it was a long time ago but i must've gotten really into it when i was about 14 and my brother was going out with some girl from S. Philly (where everyone would really listen to it)... borrowed a mixed tape from her and was hooked since then on. Oh the memories. the weird thing is... freestyle (besides latin music) is really the only music that i know of that no matter how old it is... it still sounds good.

First Freestyle

I had a couple of cousins that used to listen to it around 1987 (I was 13 then), and they listend to songs like "Show Me", "Party Your Body", "Silent Morning", just to name a few. After a while, I was hooked!!

I remember the first time I heard freestyle music. I was about 6 or 7 back in 87 or 88. My bro and a good friend of the family were into djing and all I heard from there on was freestyle. It all started just that way. TKA, Johnny O, Cynthia, etc.... Wow it's really been that long?

I got my first freestyle cassette mix from a friend of mine. He was the younger brother of one of my close friends. He was 12 and I was 18. I have been hooked ever since. He still updates me on the new stuff.

My first freestyle song that I loved back then and still love now is Summertime, Summertime.

It's gotta be my favorite song...

Well, actually my parents got me hooked on Freestyle. They were teens during the Freestyle era, and I was about 2 or 3 years old. They had played the music on vinyls,or 12".I think the 1st song I heard was "Change on Me" by Cynthia. Then Funky Little Beat. Then Fantasy Girl. My dad would take me to the skating rink, where I would always hear it at. So from there I just became obsessed. I still am to this very day.

I heard it on the radio in I think it was 94, it caught my attention after hearing a few songs in a row and from there it was pretty much love as far as I know it........lol

Ahhhhh yes.....I first heard freestyle on the radio when I was 11, I'm 23 now. I didn't have a clue what it was I just thought it was regular music being played on the radio. I started mixing my own tapes in my room. I met this guy (friend) when I was 16 who listened to freestyle. Thats when I finally found the name of the music I came to love.

back in da dayzzzz...

MY UNCLE + HIS TURNTABLES + SHANNON = (let da madness begin)

Hmmmm... I remember first listening to freestyle back in the 80s when i was at my friends house and they were playing a tape with Let The Music Play and Its Automatic and all them old jams on it. Now Im 21 and I think about that an Im just like man that was so long ago!!

I remember when I first heard and seen a Freestyle video it was by Lisa Lisa & The Cult Jam (I think '83-'84), I was 5 years old and I kind-of-liked it. Anyways I got reintroduced to freestyle in high school thanks to my girl Little Image & my boy Sleepy (they showed me the light). And since then I'm trying to introduce it to my friends (it's a slow process though).

Shannon's "Let The Music Play" started it all. Boston at the time, up through the early 90's had one or two very freestyle-friendly stations. I started buying 12" singles in the 80's, and kept going. I started getting out of the sound around 95-96 when every song seemed to sport a planet-rock beat and it just got tedious. In 98, I heard Rockell's "I Fell In Love" and it started again. Now if only radio stations in Boston would start even acknowledging freestyle more, things would be great.
