It seems amazing to me how all these young peeps out there love freestyle. They must have had a sister or a brother or someone that listened to it first... I started listening to freestyle in 1984, damn I was 14, (when LB pants and two toned pants skippies and teased hair were in.. I was a big time guidette from bensonhurst and boy was fresstyle big then!!! I remember listening to B-91 ALL the time and jamming the radio on manhattan beach listening to it.. Everyone did!! Its just great to see even the young peeps loving it as much as I do... Hey does that mean my kids will become freestyle heads too??? Maybe in a few years they too will be writing on this board! lol, boy am I aging myself! lolol
 
How I got Into Freestyle

I first got into freestyle around 7th grade during the whole early 90s period when Lil Suzy and Collage and such were big. "I'll Be Loving You" "Take Me In Your Arms" "I Remember" and "In A Dream" were really popular. My older sisters that were grown up and had kids listened to it, and even went to some shows. I got REALLY into it when i started hanging out with a group of people that were really into it, and so that is how it all started for me.
 
Believe it or not, t.v. showed me the way!

It was about 1986 and my family didn't have cable. My brother and I would stay up late at night on Fridays to watch "Friday Night Videos", Which was on one of the networks. One night they played "I Wonder If I Take You Home" and backed it up with "Hooked On You" (real early video featuring Betty, Margie, and Mari following/singing to some boys in a park) and after that, I knew I had to have freestyle!!!!!!!!!
 
it first started for me during the years of 84-85, when i use to live in jersey(west NY,bergerline st) lol. my aunts boyfriend who was 15 years younger than her use to breakdance to early electro stuff(freestyles roots!) like kraftwerk,planet patrol,man parrish,c-bank,freeze,jenny burton,shannon,hasim,quadrant six, which eventually evolved to the latin hip hop/freestyle stuff-Nayobe,lisa lisa,jellybean,tka,leather-n-lace,sa-fire, etc...then i moved to miami in 86 and thats when i really got into it. there was nothing but freestyle on the radio, and the festival concerts like calle ocho,hialeah spring festival,july 4th beach parties had all freestyle acts in their lineup so thats where i developed my passion for this music =0)

DAYUM, I REMEMBER...IT ALL STARTED WHEN MY UNCLE PLAYED HIS VINYL RECORDS AND WHEN MY FAMILY MADE THOSE "FAMILY GATHERINGS" THAT EVERYONE GETS INVITED BY SOMEONE ELSE WHO WAS INVITED BY YOUR GRANDMA....LOL. WELL, I REMEMBER HIM PLAYING AND MIXING UP A STORM WITH SHANNON'S "LET THE MUSIC PLAY"....THATs GOTTA BE MY FIRST TIME. AS FAR AS I CAN REMEMBER, THATS HOW I GOT STARTED WITH MY DJ STUFF B/C OF INFLUENCES OF MY UNCLE AND THE MUSIC. I REMEMBER "LOVE LETTERS" WHO CAN FORGET LISA LISA AND CULT JAM...AHHH.

How I got started....

I was an impressionable kid at age 5 in 1986 and I was obsessed with listening to the radio, so when Hot 103 first premeried in August of 1986 I loved the sound of the songs they played...So here I was, in kindergarten, going to Music Factory in the Staten Island mall and buying every 12" that I could get my hands on that they were playing on the radio at the time...This continued all throughout my early childhood, I remember religiously being allowed to stay up until 11 on Saturday nights so I could tape the Hot 97 Saturday Night Dance Party..I used to hear the "OUTQ CLUB AND CONCERT CALENDAR" commercials and wish I was old enough to go to clubs and see the live shows...Those really were the days....As the 90's came and freestyle disappeared from the radio, I forgot about it until KTU came back and it was about that time that I got my first real set of DJ equipment, so out came the old freestyle records, and I havent stopped since, probably never will
 
NayoBe got me into Freestyle!!

Nayobe was the first to bring my attention towards Freestyle music!!! God, If I wasnt married to my baby Shordee, you'll be in trouble Nay 🙂
I beleive I was in High School when I used to cut to get ill and DJ(Freestyle) in my boy Pat's house in Flatbush Brooklyn. (Not like that was the smart thing to do, believe me I payed for it) Then in 1990, I became Kid Cassanova on WKRB B91 and that was it, It was over!!!
I remember going with George Gee to interview Brenda K Star and having artist such as India, TKA, and many more who where making noise come to the station for interviews!!
Those where the days, and being everything goes in circles, I believe "IT'S TIME"!!!!!!
Summers almost here and Freestyles back on the block, can't wait!!

A friend of mine somehow got hiz handz on Tommy Boy's greatest Beats VOL.1. Ever since I heard his crummy copy, i went Nutz!
I remember being around 7 and "spinning" freestyle on my 'radioshow'. Tape Player, Tape rekord and pair of Rollerskates and a Piece of Wood would balance myself on don't ask, I still don't get it).

ahhhh back in 87 when i was about 10 years old listening to "now im jumping up and downn spinning all around because of you babee" or going to LACES rollerrink and rollerskating to "All Night Passion" lol how cheezy!! ahhh i used to hear those commercials tooo with the OUT Q - i wanted to go to Emerald City, Paleds, Silverscreens Wild Wednesdays but i was too youngg!! then as i got a lil older i used to go to AVANTI teen nights hee hee.
 
miami freestyle

i cant forget all the miami clubs who pumped the freestyle flava, like 1235/decos in 1987 where i saw will to power the first night i went. then after i was hooked so i went every weekend,and i saw everyone there. other clubs were freestyle was hot was ricks bar,casanovas,club nu,na penthas and my favorite hangout HOT WHEELS skating center. hot wheels was da sh*T, they would have these big blowouts with like 20 freestyle acts from ny and miami, plus the bass acts that ruled the miami scence also....i miss them dayz =( i remember hanging out backstage with artist like connie,latin rascals,joey kid,jaya,stevie b,merci mercy,linear,tolga,brenda k starr,tka,sasha,cover girls,reinaldo, and thinking i was the shit for being seen with them lol. to me they were da biggest thing in the world back then...i still feel the same way =)

I FIRST HEARD FREESTYLE WHEN IT WAS NOT CALLED "FREESTYLE" SINCE I COULD ROLLERSKATE, I WOULD SAY SINCE 1983. I HEARD THE WORD IN "1991" USED TO CATAGORIZE OUR GREAT MUSIC.
 
Im 21 and I started to listen to freestyle in like the 6 grade( I think it was my first 6 grade year). Anywho.... It was when "Bass Bomb" by thump records had just been released. The tape (I dont think cd`s were used that often back then) cover is what compeled me to even listen to it. So I bought the cassette and came home already in love with the genre of music. The second song did it for me "Party your Body" by Stevie B. After that it was only Freestyle.
 
I first starting listening to freestyle back in the early to mid eightees, when i lived in pennsylvania, i was like 11 or 12 and i remember being at a cousins graduation party and hearing the glamourous life and liking the beat. By the mid eightees everyone it seemed was into freestyle and they would have block parties and even church parties that would rock it. In 1987 i went to my first afterhour club,in pennsylvania called the roxy. I was only 14 but they let me in anyways because i was with my older cousins. This was the club in that city for freestyle. I saw leather and lace perform there and i was like hooked after that. Not too long after that, i acquired my first 12inches, which were diamond eyes " i wont stop loving you" and red hot ( i forgot the artist). I continued to be a freestyle head up until 1990 when i moved to nyc. then i got into the house scene. However I still over three crates of freestyle from that era. I'll always have a special place in my heart for the music
 
I'm late to this topic. Anyway,

I was into Electrohop music (1985) when I started DJing. It was sometimes called Funk. Wrecking Cru and Egyptian Lover were my fave artists. "Play At Your Own Risk" was my favorite song. I listened to KDAY AM at nights to listen to mixes. At times, they'd throw in Trinere and Nocera. Went to some parties in '86. Heard "I Know You Love Me" which became my favorite song for a long time. Power106 got started. Bought the 3 Expose' 12" singles that were available at that time. So I had Funk, Trinere, Nocera, and Expose in my crates. A year later, "Because Of You" by Cover Girls became my new fave song. KIIS AM, a station that played mixes 24-hours station started (88?). That's when I heard the most Freestyle songs and really got into it. Didn't really notice the term "Freestyle" until the George Lamond and Lisette Melendez singles. Don't even remember how the term got popular. Never heard the radio stations say it.

Well...I always had good taste when it comes to music, even when i was younger...and Im sure I liked freestyle before I knew what it was ;O). I do have an older sister who's 24. I do remember liking Expose and Lisa Lisa, back then...but I was really young. When I first got really into freestyle was when I was 12 in 92. I went rollerskating like everyday at Skate Away, and joined the speedteam. They played freestyle ALL the time. The first freestyle tape I bought was the maxicassingle "Take Me in Your Arms/Love Cant Wait" by Lil Suzy :O)! I played that tape so much!!! LOL The more I went to the rink the more I loved freestyle and the BIGGER my freestyle tape collection got. So to me the words freestyle and skating go hand in hand. I dont think you can have a skating rink without freestyle!!! Im glad I got into freestyle....theres no other music Ill ever like more :O)!
 
Wow, I cant believe how many of you also listened to B91 back in the day. My sister used to listen to it and got me hooked. She would go to the Music Factory here in Brooklyn almost every weekend and buy tons of 12'' freestyle records. She would always make me tapes. I have always been into music but I really remember loving music from Lisa Lisa, Expose, Shannon. In junior high school I really got hooked on freestyle. I remember blasting TKA's One Way Love and Noel's Silent Morning on my radio as I sat outside on a summer day. Alisha was from my neighborhood and went to the same schools as me so I was really into her music like Too Turned On and All Night Passion. And yes..OUTQ...I also wanted to go to Emerald City...lol My sister used to have club ads from all those places that featured freestyle artists pasted on her door. She went to see TKA at this place called the Bay Club in Sheepsead Bay. I was sooooo jealous! I remember going to my junior high prom in 1989...the DJ played a lot of freestyle....it was awesome!Thats why listening to old school freestyle brings back so many memories for me. Im glad I was able to experience it and Im really glad that its still around!!

My Freestyle Story

Well Peeps,

It started for me in the summer of 1989, when i was 17.
I was always a late bloomer (haha). My father was a NYC cop back then. One day, he brought home a tape that he took from some kid. I'll give u one guess... It was the cassette of Stevie B In My Eyes. I listened to it and immediately liked it.
I worked in a toy store that summer in Woodhaven, Queens on Jamaica Ave and 90th street, and i met a friend who was really into freestyle. He had this big Lincoln with an awesome system. All i know is that he had speakers all over the back deck and behind the seat too!! When i had my hair cut short, it used to vibrate from the bass!! (lol)
Anyway, when we set up tables of toys outside the store, we used to park our cars in front and blast the freestyle!! George Lamond, Cynthia, TKA, etc. and some old skool like Slick Rick's Mona Lisa. It was a great summer. I knew that i loved this music, i just couldnt get into the clubs that were playing it cause i was too young.
That's why im so glad that freestyle is coming back. I wont miss out on it this time around!! It's the best because it's music that just makes ya feel goooooood!!!

I am 17 and I have loved freestyle since forever. My father has been a DJ here in Chicago (and now all over the country)
for over 26 years. He has always mixed house and oldskool. We always had DJ's in my house and over a 100,000 records in the basement. And one day a friend of his left a reel of his mix so my dad could put it on a tape and when i heard it i fell in love. (man i was a real shortie cause they were using reels and beat boxes and all that.)After that i found all the freestyle records my dad had and put them on tapes. after that i just had his friends give me their mixes and i would buy some to. then when i was about 12 i would go to rainbow roller rink and all these carnivals and all they would play was freestyle. I got really into it in 7th grade when i started working in the summer for my dad's friend selling mixes at festivals/carnivals and lowrider shows and that is when i got to see my fav freestyle acts, Steve b, George lamond, Judy torres and i got to meet Judy at a show through one of my dads friends. that was cool cause i had her autograph my backstage pass. and my neighbor grew up with George so I always got stuff from him and got to meet him a couple times. Over here for a while freestyle disappeared. But I never stopped listening and I never will.

My older sister listened to it. She used to go ot Avanti's and see TKA. She even drove them home one night. I guess they weren't that well known. In '91 I started getting into it. In '92 I went to teen night at a little place in Brooklyn called Christopher's. They played a lot of freestyle. That was it for me.
