At the moment in Upstate NY but will be moving to
In 1976,I seen the movie "Saturday Night Fever" and knew then that I must try to get involved with this type of music presentation.I was one of the better freelance DJ's(there were many)in the NYC area and now I only wish I could have devoted more time to the actual arrangements of Disco. That is the real deal, arranging the music.I am a great disco DJ but I try to arrange freestyle and I get stuck from lack of the equipment needed to do a great freestyle creation.I love both era's though, disco and freestyle. They are both the only music I truly love.I gave over 20 years of my life to it when I could and now I wish I would have been able to give more. The good old days are gone but freestyle lives forever.Take care all.

I think freestyle has progressed very much through the years. The equipment is better and in any form of music, through the years, the stakes are higher. You gotta come with something better than the last person who came with the big hits. After '91, like most people, I stopped listening to it. It wasn't on the radio and I had just moved to Atlanta where there wasn't much. But Atlanta gives bass music a lot of rotation, I will always love the bass sound whether it's freestyle, rap, whatever. It's energetic without being to fast or crazy and it's got a smooth, laid-back rhythm. With artists like Lisette Melendez, Cynthia, George LaMond, and Safire returning with brand new stuff that sounds great, I think more people who were familiar with the sound will get back to it. I think these artists are very important and instrumental in bringing back the good, quality freestyle tracks!

The equipment has gotten better and more high tech through the years so I think it has improved. It's just that, more talented artists are needed. But artists like Lisette, Cynthia, Safire, & G.L. have been holding it down pretty good. New artists like Jocelyn enriquez & Rockell are making some good tracks too, and getting some good airplay and attention. These guys just need some help from some talented up and coming artists to back them up and then it's all good!

😕Improvements? Like what do you mean for example?

I for one am not a HUGE Disco fan although I did like Sat. Night Fever (John Travolta was one of my crushes back in the day lol), but Disco was my younger sisters era/time frame. Disco music doesn't exist anymore, or am I wrong? So no improvements there that I know of.

As for FREESTYLE I prefer "old school", maybe because that was the era/time period for that type of music. And I am old enough to have enjoyed it when it first came out, but I got to see very few live performances back in the day. I should have tried harder though. Regrets!!

Which leaves us to today, the present.
I appreciate the fact and LOVE that new and old Latin and freestyle artists are still trying to carry forth into the future the "freestyle" sound.
What I think that they're up against is HUGE in my opinion. Lack of labels currently, lack of promotion/exposure on the radio and maybe sometimes even from their own labels, and generally not enough respect where respect is due.
The fan base (us diehard fans) is still there, but we can only do so much.

For example, I recently went into my former fave record store (Tower Records in NE Philly) and each time I go there I find some "new" and "old" freestyle, but not like it used to be. The supply of CDS to choose from has dwindled in numbers, and the selection is in a small corner in the back of the store. The vinyl that they used to carry no longer exists so now I search for those in independent less know record stores. Their Tower Records promo guide/magazine didn't even have JohnnyO's new CD listed as a new release, AND his new release wasn't in their database 🙁

And it seems like in the music/record industry they lump freestyle into the catagory of Dance/Electronica, or "Other". I tell ya I get frustrated as all hell (can I use that word JackG?)!

The new music that old and new freestyle artists are putting out I generally like, and I'm buying new freestyle, but just like the Disco time period which has come and gone, I wonder if we can EVER bring back FREESTYLE to the level of recognition and respect that it once had.

Yes there have been some improvements in freestyle by the artists that I respect for trying but not improvements in the business end of it in my opinion. And some artists nowadays prefer not to use the old school beat/sound. I prefer it that way as I'm not a huge fan of Techno, Electronica, Jungle beats etc., but hey lots of fans are, so to each his own, right?

Your turn, does that help??

Welcome to the Board Harry! Disco was my sisters era/timeperiod and as for me I prefer FREESTYLE. Top preference is "old school" freestyle, but I buy and listen to "new school" freestyle also. I'm just not a HUGE fan of Techno beats, Electronica, Jungle, etc. But alot of fans are so I try to keep an open mind.

As for improvements, Disco has gotta be dead, right? So there can't be any improvements there. Freestyle has made progress I would say rather than use the word "improvements" because how can you (in my opinion) improve what was perfect (IMO) back in the day when it was at the peak of its popularity.

Freestyle has "evolved" IMO and will roll with the times and chnage accordingly. I LOVE some of the "new" freestyle, but alot of the "old school" sound/beats remain in the past as artists try different things, which is OK with me. The only lack of improvement that I see for freestyle is how little its promoted right now by the labels (what labels exist anymore) IMO, and by the music/record stores etc. I feel that freestyle is not being given the RESPECT and RECOGNITION that I feel it is due from all the success that it has in the past.

Some record stores now lump freestyle into the Dance, Electronica category, and when something new comes out you're lucky if they evn have it in their database, or in stock. Now who's fault is that??
Radio airplay especially for the new and old freestyle, little if any unless that station has its roots in freestyle like KTU.

Now its your turn.......

What do you mean by "improvements"? And isn't disco dead??
