File sharing is great I love it always have always will. I do however buy cd's if I like the music since I like to collect and an mp3 can never sound as good as an original. But like Rhoq said sometimes people need rare jamz.I used to give em out but then I figured....fuhgettaboudit! I worked hard for them! Ok so I'm not sure if I'm for or against. :blah to all who oppose

Don't get me started....

Isnt it music sharing also when you record a tape or cd for your friend?

No it is not music sharing...
No it is music stealing!

Anyunauthorized duplication of a copywritten recording violates federal copyright law, and is subject to fines and/or imprisionment.

Therefore, unless Metropolitan gives you written permission, making a tape or cd for your friend is illegal!

So is downloading the song from bankrupt Napster and Kazaa!

the same controversy was around back when the VCR first came out. the maker was sued because the VCR enabled the recording of copyrighted television programs/movies. the VCR company successfully defended the lawsuit. apparently napster wasnt so lucky. i wonder how people will feel about mp3s and file sharing 10-20 years from now?

file sharing is good and bad. on one hand some people will download free music and never buy it, but on the other hand so many people are downloading music they never would have heard otherwise AND buying it. some freestyle fans may never have heard many new school songs if it wasnt for mp3s. a lot of those people probably went the extra mile and decided to buy the real thing because the quality was better.

i have SOME freestyle CDs, tapes, & records, but my freestyle mp3 collection is huge. i can easily find various compilations and releases...but bottom line i dont really buy anything anymore because i was sick of getting ripped off. all of the "greatest hits" type of compilations have many of the same songs that all the other compilations have, and most of the new school releases have 2 good songs if youre lucky and all the other songs are a joke. definitely not worth $15-$20. if i ever come across a freestyle cd that is worth it, i will have no problem paying for it. but until then i am perfectly happy "sampling" what is out there instead of wasting money.

YES, BUT WHOS GOING TO TELL? ARE YOU GOING TO DROP THE DIME ON YOUR FRIEND FOR MAKING A COPY? BELIEVE IT OR NOT, THE INDUSTRY ENCOURAGES THAT.

WHY DO YOU THINK THEY MAKE "BLANK CDs & CASSETTES"?

Believe it or not, the sales of blank cds and cassettes go towards the record companies. I bet no one here knew that. a certain percentage goes right back to the big guy. Same thing with blank VHS & DVD's. at least the big names particapate (TDK, MAXELL, FUJI)

Why do you think they seem to be on the "high-price" side when it comes to retail?

like i said, i like "originals". the thrill of the hunt and the pride of owning something thats rare and hard to find is so much better than downloading an MP3, which is just a copy of a original. I would go for the original, in my hands, go out and buy it idea. everything is out there. you just have to go out and search. I used to have a huge list of HARD TO FIND songs BUT do you know what? they all eventually come out on some sort of compilation!

Kenny, Kenny, Kenny...

As usual you and other people just dont get it.

I was not debating the common good or bad of the situation.
I know the good and the bad.

The bottom line is:

Let’s just say you write a song, and sell it to a record company who uses it for Johnny O to record a new song, you are supposed to get paid every time they sell a copy of the song of a cd or tape with the song on it.

So every time somebody burns the song you wrote onto cd, or copies it onto tape is one more time you the songwriter, are not getting paid.

Same goes for the singer.

Every time somebody burns the song onto cd, or copies it onto tape is one more time the artist is not getting paid.

Artistik, Metropolitan, and Cutting… Do you really thing these small Freestyle labels see a dime from the sale of blank tapes or blank cd’s? Get a clue!

Like the Rhoq said…. you put Willie Valentin out of business.
You thieves!

In the new millennium, you bring new meaning to the song title “Thief Of Hearts” for sure!

Again this is not a subject to debate.

Like I said I now the good and bad of the subject.

Song gets out there blah, blah, blah.
People get to here the song blah, blah, blah.

Maybe not.
But, I’ll tell you what.
Use one of my songs in a mix without permission and I’ll sue your ass!

I never mentioned any names. Its obvious that some labels have no pull. its the BIG COMPANIES that can afford to do it. I have a friend that works for TDK on Long Island and he told me the whole deal. I guess i got the clue before you.🙄

And in case you didnt read any of my posts in the past, Im against MP3's and Napster.

kenny there was nothing like the thrill of hearing a record on hot 103 or hot 97 and going to find it and for me most of the time they were promos' that was the best feeling....I remember contacting scott blackwell, freddie bastone and glenn friscia and stuff they were playing, most of it being reels..exclusive for the latin rascals

i was just trying to say its not really "stealing" if you get a copy from a friend. hes loaning you his tape. you do what you want then give it back. with all this file sharing, it makes that "borrowing tape" idea look like stealing a piece of paper from your teacher as opposed to robbing a bank!🙂

thats why the blank cd/cassette.vhs/dvd industry charges a bit extra. they give a percentage to make the "copying" legal. if it was "illegal" to copy a tape, then why are the TDK'S, MAXELLS AND FUJIS still in busniess? one hand washes the other.

CEESIL, i used to love hearing a great song on the radio the rushing out to buy the song. i hated it when the song was so new, i had to wait a couple of weeks for the stores to get them in! 🙁

it was a pure rush...remember those promo only hot mixes too, like safire's double sided 12 inch with let me be and don't break my heart, on the edge test pressing by the latin rascals, there where so many things back then, my favorite was silent morning with mandolay...that was great..

Aimee you made a good point with the VCR. I always use the example that for decades radios were and still are made with recording capabilities so I say this to Jason Atomic. You do have a point with the copyright issue but the world is run by hypocrites.Your damned if you do and your damned if you don't.
I for one believe in file sharing and don't give a s**t what anyone says. I actually buy the music if I like it.I recently had someone send me many songs on the "Maximum Freestyle" cd. I liked them, so what did I do? I bought the cd.Had they not sent them to me chances are I would not have bought it.
Let's say i were to buy a cd and I hated it.Yes the industry just got a sale, but feeling dooped I will then not hesitate to tell others it sucks! Then I'll make a million copies just for the hell of it.This also leads me to another issue.Ever see a new Freestyle cd on the "listen to" station at a Tower records store? Me neither!
:blah to all who oppose!! Peace

"Life's too short"
"love will never hurt me"
"Life's too short"
"You'll never see my broken heart"-Latin rascals
