back to miami freestyle scene

Miami's freestyle scene is not dead, its underground.
it always was and always will have a foot in the undergound.

I thank power 96 for the past, helping me push some records and getting them on the air. same as for the pirate stations that were responsible for the push of trance and freestyle/breaks music during the mid 90's before power 96 started on that train or party 93.1 ever existed.

But that was long ago........NO one ever listenes to power 96 to hear Freestyle.
Salsa 98 at midday is the refuge for all those from power 96 and also mega 103 who loved to listen to classic freestyle, hi nrg, some disco and everything in between. the dj is Ciro Llerena, who was the original freestyle dj who span at clubs like ricks bar, 1235, casanovas, manhattans, etc. he is the one mixing in stuff that you also didnt hear on radio at the time it was out.All styles of classic freestyle. (marimabero player style!!!).

party 93.1 plays ocasianaly the more known records (for now), but suport more modern sides of freestyle breaks records, trance, house and slowly soon electro clash.
If you want to go clubbing, you basically gata go to space 34, or pop life to hear a mix of both classic and modern souped up electro and freestyle beats. If you want classics, saturday night at the soho lounge now has a night that play all kinds of miami freestyle and hi nrg classics. everything is spread out and everyone is thriving on it. You just have to know where to go, and that is usually known amung people in the undergound freestyle scene in miami in the present day.

Hot 105 was the first ever latinhiphop station in the country, california had the second.
The format of hot 105 was that of a street music format or i can also say latin urban (if you could imagine Mundo's "the roof", or urban latino tv/magazine, but a radio station and they played nothing but rap, electrofunk/freestyle and R&B). The djs, came from the same crowd that was the target audience, many from Hielea.
But this is were it all hapened, this is were it all began for many djs, producers and where new york artist had to come first before breaking big anywhere else.it was the station were miamis early artist made their debut. (lol, the giant boom box with the dj booth inside. open air concerts at the youth fair: crazy times!.
Rythm 98 was the other, although leaned more to rap and the african american listeners, they to also played the more street driven latin hiphop sides and electro funk. but one thing about both: THEY both exploded the Miami electro bass movement.
Power 96 came later in the late 80's when Miami had their second and biggest wave of freestyle and bass (miami had many styles of bass, by the way)(many overlaping and also considered both freestyle and bass records).

to the person that said people come to miami to retire.....: ok, keep saying that to yourself.Miami has been making noise for many years and founded many aspects of freestyle. and today we continue to do so.
but, then again, only REAL freestyle people recognize.

Then again, as a reminder..there is florida, but then there is MIAMI.
if you get around, youl know and love the diference.

thats all for now.

p.s. many freestyle heads will be out at soho lounge this saturday.

also....I DONT WANA HEAR anyone bust out with that latin hiphop is fat joe and all that. the real latin hiphop was latinhiphop DANCE MUSIC.Thats what it origanaly was called.
if you dont know why and you claim to be a 100% freestyler, you should be doing some thinking.
Everything that happens today in freestyle/breaks has to do mainly with electro funk and the earliest freestyle records.
Everything that will effect the next move in present day freestyle breaks for tomorow, has alot to do within the latinhiphop: music structure to the fashion to the politics to the slang.
and yes, part of todays hiphop community will get involved or be influenced.

just a lil industry insider For your FYI.
but then again ; "WHAT YOU DONT KNOW ,WONT HURT YOU!!!!!!!!".

miami freestyle

reporting here from vacation again,.

i think freestyle is dead here,. 96.5 has turned into hip hop and that 93.1 while very good dance station plays no freestyle,.

and has no dj's just throwing record after record,. and theyve played just today the same songs 5 or 8 times,.

I first heard Ciro Llerena on Power 96, when he did the lunch time classic dance and disco mix in the mid 1990's, boy I tell you what, I did not like disco untill I heard his mixes, He did not play that 1970's top 40 crap, He played the 1970's underground club disco such as Nightlife Unlimited, Paul Jabara, Erotic Drum Band Etc. I never really heard him play freestyle. Even though power 96 suck now a days, I still thank them for playing all the good stuff back in the day. If it wasn't for them, I would not know half of the old school stuff I know now, and would not have a big vinyl collection. record lables, Casablanca, Unidisc witch was a candian branch of Prism lable in newyork, and freestyle style record lables such as micmac, cutting, and all the rest. Also to mention the Dj's that use to do the freestyle mixes, did not play crap freestyle, All the mixes were sweeeeet even if they did play one or two songs I didn't care for....

I think we all who live here in south florida should get on Party 93.1 about mixing freestyle, disco and all the old stuff, I don't see that happening. What do you think??

I hope so, But, I think even say they should have a full 12noon lunch mix, playing all the old school stuff like 70's disco on certain days and freestyle on others and maybe retro too. One thing that was good about power 96 they would play alot of old school and new school, of course not mixed together, back then in there mixes around 9pm at night they would do 30min sets one set of hiphop, booty bass then dance and then old school, even during the day when they didn't mix they would play something old every once and a while, Hearing just the new stuff over and over 3 times an hour gets tiring. I think they have computerized jukebox running, they need on air DJ's in my opinion, it get boring hearing them cut down power 96 and Y100 every other song, Ok they have proved their point along time ago. At the begining when 93.1 started, power 96 was still playing dance, freestyle and retro, and I noticed they slowly fazed out of those formats........

Adam,
To the Latin & Hispanic community, Freestyle & that kool underground Disco stuff is still VERY much alive here in South Florida.
As Vapro had stated: "Salsa98.3 fm" is the place. 🙂

Yeah its a Spanish station, & they play Spanish music, but a good percentage of their airtime is Freestyle & rare oldskool Disco & Electro-Breakdance classics. Not just on lunch & weekend mixes, but during regular rotation as well.

One minute they will play a Salsa song by Marc Anthony, & the next they bust out with "Honey To A Bee" by Tina B, - or something by TKA or Lime & whatnot.
Its mad kool!!!! You just gotta really tune in.

So dont even mention Power96 or Party93.1, they dont even count anymore in my eyes.
Party 93.1 is only kool for trancy-dancy stuff, especially on weekend nights when they play Tribal & House. THATS ALL.

Tune in, & you'll see what I mean. But I dont think ur a fan of Spanish music, since I know who u are. 🙂
lol.

ada

i heard 93.1 the hole day today cuase i had to go to downtown miami and then to coral gables then back up to broward for something else,.lol

and i can tell first hand that they played 3 or 5 songs at least ten times,.

will you be my boyfreind """
some transe song
and some other thing
and you changing me""

with no dj's and a lot of """" boy freind girl freind"""" dance music,. which is great for us dance people,. lol ,. but not great for ratings,.

there wasnt even one hard nyc type club song on there,. in fact there was hardly anything with words,. in any of the songs,.

i think these were all local miami underground transe songs or something,. cuase they were def not hard beats,. like up in nyc,.

they were more like continous transe beats,. still listen to the station though,.

but im tellin you im on vacation here till sep 10,. and i can tell you freestyle has disappeared,. and 93.1 is it for now it looks like.

but

either way the final result is that here in miami ive been clubbing on vacation for many years,. and whats happening is that people our age that went to h.s.

between 82 to about 91 are pretty much ending there club careers lol,. and leaving the meat markets lol,. and the major clubs here,.

and we are being replaced by the people who graduated 92 through 98 or so,.

people who are between 23 to 26 or so today,. those guys grew up during prime hip hop years,. 93 through 97

so while it kills us to hear hip hop,. most people in that generation wont raise a big stink,.

(( similar to the way we sort of never raised a big stink to house when it came out 85 through 89 and was the only other music in nyc other than freestyle in the club))

if club gets phased out,. and they dont hear it in clubs or radio,. they wont care

where as we 82 through 89 would prob just boycott the club or station,. lol,.

and if your talking about anyone uder 23 forget it !!!!.

thing is your 80's crowd is slowly leaving all the under 30 clubs here,.

which the majority of the clubs in miami are under 30,. way majority actually !!!!

so thats why the change has happened,. cuase this new crowd donst really care?

and the crowd which is just around the corner from entering the 23 to 26 club sceene are these little hip hop kids from the late 90's,.

so prob freestyle here is taken its last breathes,.

unless that 93.1 plays freestyle later

ya......The station 98.3 is really good with the music selection, But I'm the average white boy and can't understand spanish even though I really want to. But anyways I like to hear what the on air dj's are saying. Is that a pirate station? It probably isn't because I believe it's a miami station and I can get it hear in West Palm Beach. Also to metion to Company B, I have my turntable and mix board hooked up to the computer and I'm listening to one of your records now (Full Circle) let me just say, You did A great job with that song, If I got a gig somewhere where I could play freestyle, your record would be on the turntables...

I just wonder how all those stations that air rap, hiphop, urban Etc. can manage to survive, with them all competing???? I noticed you have to be signed up to the power 96 website to e-mail them, their trying to make it harder for people to e-mail them bad feedback, and they know the younger generation will not complain. If they don't like what they here, they will just change the station. Power96 only cares for the ratings and the $$$$$$, so I guess their ratings were bad back then, even though we all liked there station....

rbonuc29 I guess you have a point, Even though I graduated in 98, I was young when hiphop was around, But I'm the type that likes a varity
of music from old school to right now. I'm A professional DJ that works in the gay scene, And my choice of music is house, Tribal and lot of non vocal. I would love to spin old school but there is no place for it and the dance floor would probably clear if I tried to work in a old school mix. Alot of the people that are into freestyle don't really go out anymore, their either married and have kids, or just don't want to go out anymore, I think I'll be in the clubs just right before my death bed........

thankx to B96(the only station thated played freestyle) went ghetto; its dead in chicago now too:crap

Ted;

Thankyou for letting The people of Miami Hear Whens it all gonna end ?

I appreciate the support.

Freestyle DEAD in Miami?

Its there, and ready to jump right at you.. give it some time

Thats what i say

Look at all the famous local DJ's in Miami.. robbie Reviera, oscar g, stryke, Edgar V.. these are all famous DJ's that LOVE FREESTYLE.. but one problem.. they play House, techno, and trance.. but thats becuase its where the money's at. Yet, ask them to show u there freestyle record collection, and they will open there eyes, and immediatley buy you a bottle of grey goose(happens).

WOW.. you want freestyle music.. listen to the lunch hour mix in 98.3.. damn.. that is some good old classic freestyle music

You want freestyle.. go to banana joe's in coconut grove At midnight there is an unknown DJ(i've been looking for him) who plays the sickest freestyle mixes i've heard in my short life, but my good friend who never dances; was dropping old school moves on the floor with more than 1000 people who were there dancing there ass off to freestyle, they even asked for an encore mix which he did for 30 minutes.. wow.. good times

If you dont see it
Make IT!!

Edwin Perez

you

know the problem with you guys or other freestyle people is you seem to be big on people No one knows about? dood if it dosent get played on the radio,. and i mean for weeks,. and the person dosnt sing in the club,. for weeks,. and etc,.

then publicly the person dosnt exist lol,. dont matter how much We might know them in order for freestlye to survive,. people maintstream people got to know about thse dj's.

and i tell you i went out last night to a real popular club here 609. and they play only hip hop. and that was a club that use to play club all the way up to 96,.

so belive dance music is dying here lol.

ive always told people on the web site,. they're were better off keeping freestyle alive amonst ourselves,. then we are trying to spread it.

look at the ELvis lives people they have there community of people who like elvis,. and they do real well,. and they dont invite anyone in?

and the beattles poeple they do real well and dont invite anyone in ? and same thing for disco people they dont invite anyone in,. and they have prob 2 to 3 million followers,.

so why cant we do the same thing ,. ?????????

just get a count of all the people we got,. and keep freestyle alive amonst ourselves,. ????????????????

and the heak with anyone else and bringing in other people ??? or if its mainstream or not.

i bet we got about 2 to about 400 thousand freestyle people out there,.

and about 1 million or so club people out there,.

Thats enough ! lol,. we just form a tight circle and keep club alive like that ?????

and we could prob keep it running real well,. ? just like elvis people do lol and the beattles people do and etc,.

but i think were waisting time thinking that we can turn these kids,. or that its going to catch on,.

etc,.

were much better off starting our own little community,. just like back in the day,. were freestyle was in the bronx queens and hudson county ,. nyc area,.

and that was it !!!!! and we did well like that for years between 85 to 89 !!!.

but then they tried to take it mainstream and thats when it went to Crap !!

im telling you guys we are far better off going back underground,.

re group

and do everything via freindly clubs friendly radion stations and the web !!! and thats it !!!

lol,.

and if it spreads it spread if it dont it dont,. what do we care ??????????

so long as we can keep it alive??? in chicago

miami nyc La and houston

thats all we need,.

heak with trying to get the mainstream already lol ,.
