Hmmm

Johnny, I just feel that the so called Freeestylemusic today is very emotionless both in the vocals and production.
My heart doesn't skips a beat when I'm listening to Robin Fox, Rockell, Freesystem or any of that stuff.
I don't even come close to the feeling listening to the artist mentioned comparing to when I heard let's say George LaMond, Sa-Fire, Reinald-O, Johnny O, Marshall Jones, LAW, Pure Pleazure the first time. I can still get chills from their songs even though I heard them soo many times.
95 percent of the so-called Freestyle today is too superficial and plastic, It doesn't come from the heart. It was just made for the money, It shines through in the music.
I played a couple of these Robin Fox, Free Systemish type of songs for my friend, who's been making dancemusic for a very long time. He just laughed at the production, "you can make this type of beat in ten minutes in a E-jay type of program" he said. Johnny, the sound hasn't progressed, progress means it gets better right? It has got alot worse in my opinion.
Ten years from now people won't remember Freesystem, Underdog Project, Alexia, Rockell or Robin Fox. By that time it's almost 25 years since Johnny O, George LaMond, Judy Torres, Cover Girls, TKA, Sa-Fire blew up, And I can tell you one thing, that Freestylefans will still remember them.

@ Alex,

Freesystem is one of the best Freestyle Acts in Germany (But there are many others, too).
And i know a lot of people in the US and up to 80 % like their stuff.
But you´re maybe right that people dont know several Groups or artist in 20 Years.

Peter

Alex, I can't argue your point, because you make valid points. But if you were a freestyle producer (Maybe you are, i have no idea)....what would you do? Nobody in radio will play a song that sounds like Johnny O, Stevie B, etc from 15 years ago. That sound is DATED. So these producers "Robin Fox, Freesystem", etc are trying to progress the sound while attempting to keep the genre alive by still calling it freestyle. Remember, everybodys definition of freestyle is different. Does it make my heart skip a beat when i hear it like the old school did ? Of course not. But old school is done. Its 15 yrs old. Time to move on.

You're right, NOTHING will beat old school freestyle. It will forever be my favorite format of music. But the sound needs to progress and move on. Sure, some producers out there will think the new stuff i easy to make. If thats the case, so is alot of the progressive house thats big now. And so was 80% of the old school. I'm sure there are alot of people that listen to my ktu mixshow on Sundays and hear a few songs i play and say "This isn't freestyle". Well, in my mind it is. Its either I play Elissa, Robin Fox, Paradigm, Mecca, etc, or i play "Dreamboy Dreamgirl".

well said!!

Johnny is right... I should know, Freestyle isn't the only style of music I write/produce. I have a house track coming out this month, a pop song on radio, and I'm working on a new latin release and freestyle release for later on in the year. It's not the easiest thing to please the "public" in this industry. I won't mention any names but I went through some fun with some freestyle " labels" in America because they didn't like the Back TO Me.It was either too much of this.. or too much of that. I won't even talk about some of the PURE CHEESE that they sign. My point... it's better to support the cause in anyway that you can..even if it means via remix.... at least you are supporting the lifespan of freestyle music.

Elissa 🙂
Holy, this post is like 2 pages long...

My final word

The oldschool Freestyle was made with so much more love and devotion than the "Freestyle" is today.
I agree with certain things you say Johnny, but I don't feel like this genre is moving on, I think it's about to kill itself. I don't know if I'm gonna cry or laugh when I read that top 40 Freestyle list, and I see Britney Spears.

And No Elissa, I would never support that kind of music, as you say "the lifespan of Freestyle music".
No way, the music dont say me NADA!, have you even read my posts? You begin your post with "Johnny is right... I should know" that's very ignorant of you I think, we've had our difference in opinions before. I don't know what your relation is to Freestyle Elissa, but for me it's a very big part of my life, that's why I'm spending $200 on it every month. Back in the day it was 100% freestyle, nowadays it's 10% freestyle. The only thing that's left is the rhythm (If you're lucky), neither the vocals the harmonies or the feeling is there, atleast I can't hear it. I can't argue about this, this is how I feel and nothing can change that. You Canadians can keep listening to your "Progressive/Euro-remix galore/Acid/Superficial music. You can call it what you want, call it Freestyle.. It will never be my Freestyle though.

Freestyle

Hi Alex,

I've been involved in this industry for almost 7 years now,
I've had a hit bubble under billboard in 1996 titled " Show Me How You Love Me" and " Back To Me" hit #1 in Canada. ( The rest of my top singles were either Latin or Dance). My relation to the industry can be noted on my web site..Check it out.. you can listen to my tracks on line.

My last word to you is this.... I really feel that its a wonderful thing to support freestyle music, but if we are all fighting for the wonderful music in the past that paved the way for us.. who will be here to leave a trail for those in the future?

Elissa 🙂

Elissa, I'm familiar with your music. With all due respect, It is nothing for me. I think it's cheap that you are trying to promote your website in this debate.
I agree with you FreaK, Lil Suzy is one of the few artists that has succeeded blending the old style with new elements.
More new Freestyle I like:

Synthia Figueroa
Sammy C
Cynthia - I Never Said
Spanish Fly
Lorenzo D'lan
Amante - Let's Get It On
Precious - Precious Little Fantasy
Timmy T - The One I Adore

Keep on doing what you doing Elissa, you have apperantly many fans. I wish you the best of luck in your future projects, whether it's Freestyle, Latin, Pop or anything else.

Thought......

Yes freestyle has come a LONG way and it is amazing at the support that freetyle has also recieved and deserved....I know here in Toronto freestyle was always big and will continue to be so...but with its growth into the new generation we have to change freestyle a bit in respects to its beats....but I do agree that alot of freestyle has lost its touch just because the rythm is not there..I know in Toronto ELISSA is really contributing alot to the freestyle community..which is fantastic..and her freestyle is freestyle...ROCKELL'S "TEARS" is a great example of new school freestyle...I personally enjoy it...and ELISSA'S "BACK TO ME"...and IMPULSE "HOLD ME FOREVER" is the perfect example of new school....I feel that some of the new school freestyle is lacking the freestyle rythm which is most important...however with that said...lets all concentrate on keeping the freestyle vibe alive....
KEEP FREESTYLE UNITED

Actually the live to air on Z103 from plastique plays freestyle also between 10pm and 1am.But most of the music DJ Constantine plays has to be more commercial when its on the air .After 1 pm Constantine pulls out some crazy stuff from the archives so you have to be there to check it out.
