Were you always loyal to Freestyle or did you break away at one point?

For me, I broke away around 1990 and New Jack Swing became my favorite type of music. Then it became Techno in 1991, then Deep House in 1992. When I entered college in 1993, my friends and I were into Old School Funk (Atomic Dog) and Electro Funk (Egypt Egypt). I thought I'd never get tired of Old School . . . but I did.

I started getting nostalgia for Old School Freestyle in 1997, and started making Freestyle mixed tapes for a buddy of mine who was getting nostalgic with me. I purchsed "Freestyle Boom" by Tim Schommer out of curiosity and realized, "Hey, Freestyle is still being made?!?" What a revelation. After that, I bought several compilations to try to discover New School Freestyle music I've never known before. And here I am!

Jason,

That's a good question. Myself as an artist.. I did try a few different things but not too many, as a music fan I have always been diverse. But there was a time when I all I heard and bought was Grunge music. "Live" was my favorite group. Then I started back on my first love freestyle.

i was always into FREESTYLE, but when TECHNO came out(1990), i was attracted to this new sound(never abandoning FREESTYLE). when freestyle began to die, i found myself listening to the new hip hop stuff but found it just too silly to realte to (1992). there wasnt much left and "grunge" wasnt a great alternative either!!!

me, i ve always listened to freestyle no matter what. but never abandoning the new sound s of new jack and hip hop, r and b. r and b sucks now if you ask me. so it was always at the time and still is a lil' bit of this and a lil' but of that.

i've always been a big old school freestyle fan.you may say i broke away when my old school favorites stop recording, i really dont like any of the new school stuff. i love other types of music, salsa, good r&b, jazz, club & house music. etc..

my style of music is so diverse since i been into so many scenes, but i broke away from freestyle after 93 cuz it was annoying the hell of me due to all the weak releases. that was when i moved to NYC and got involved in the rave scene(techno). i worked at all the big clubs like limelight(disco2000),tunnel,club USA & palladium with all the club kid & ravers and attended all the weekly rave parties(nasa). wow what fun that was! i even became assistant to DJ KEOKI (big rave dj) and traveled the world with him. that was the most fun i ever had..
all of the sudden one day after hard partying all night at some rave, me and my boy's were walking through the city and saw a huge add poster for timbers/tommy boys freestyle greatest beats vol.1. i went quickly to the store and brought all 4 volumes ( at the time there was only 4 released), and thats what brought me back to my roots. i fell in love with this music all over again, and started my collection once more. i even turned a few ravers & club kids into this music......

yo nyasia i also loved grunge at one time nirvana, hole, live, pearl jam and a few others i forget. i also loved some punk-green day ruled! LoL. and of course gotta have my hip hop & r&b, old school & new! but my first love will always be freestyle!

I listened to freestyle from the very beginning up to 1992 when there was no more radio airplay and couldnt find records to buy here in nyc and most of my friends were going to the hip hop clubs cuz thas where the girlies were at! i dunno it just seemed that after 92 listenin to freestyle wasnt cool...it was kinda embarrassin to admit i listened to it! i heard a bunch o songs in 95 like cynthia's how i love him and george lamond's it's always you and i was like whoa they still makin freestyle! theres a special bond with freestyle i have that will always be with me...its more than just music.

I got another one:

"Dildo dildo dildo dildo
Dildo dildo dildo dildo
Dildodildo dil dildo dildo
dildodildo dil dildo dildo
Dildo dildo dildo dildo!"

What song is that quote from? Hmmmm... 😀

I was always into dance music and freestyle since the days of Hot 103. After 1991, when things started to go downhill, I found myself with nothing good on the radio and no good records to buy (by now I was in the 6th-7th grade). Techno music was the new thing, but since radio was always the catalyst to get me into it, and techno really wasn't on the radio, I found myself listening to (don't hate me lol) the oldies station. I swear to God for about 2 years (1993-95) I listened to all the stuff from the 50's and 60's, because there was no way I was feeling grunge or hip hop. Then, around 1995, NY's Z100 started adding some dance music into their playlist, like Real McCoy "Run Away" and Corona "Rythym of the Night". Soon after, KTU came along, and for the first time in years, I heard "Show Me" and "Change On Me" on the radio. Freestyle and cheesy euro house, I was right back where I started lol. I ran right up to my room and dug all my old records out of my closet, got out the turntables, and I've been DJing and collecting ever since. The end.

FREESTYLE ALWAYZ...

EVEN WHEN FREESTLYE MUSIC FADED OUT IN THE EARLY 90'S, I HAVE ALWAYZ STAYED TRUE TO THE MUSIC. I'M NOT SAYING THAT FREESTYLE IS ALL I LISTENED TO AFTERWARDS, BUT THERE WAS ALWAYZ FREESTYLE MUSIC IN MY ROOM, CAR, BOOKBAG AND EVERY WHERE ELSE I WENT. I LABEL MYSELF AS A "MUSIC GUY," THEREFORE, I LISTEN TO ALL TYPES OF MUSIC LIKE SALSA, MERENGUE, DANCE, HIP HOP, REGGAE, TRANCE, ETC. EVERY ONE USE TO RAG ON ME AND STILL DO BECAUSE I'M A FREESTYLE FREAK, BUT ITS ALL GOOD B/C ITS ALL IN THE HEART. I HAVE FAITH IN FREESTYLE & IN IT'S ARTISTS. I ENJOY HEARING ABOUT FREESTYLE ARTISTS DOING GOOD LIKE INDIA, MARC ANTHONY, GEORGE LAMOND, BRENDA K. STARR, JOEY KIDD. IT JUST MAKES MY FAITH GROW STRONGER AND PROUD TO HEAR THAT THESE "GREAT VOICES" ARE BEING EXPOSED AND NOT HIDDEN IN THE BACKROOM.

!QUE SIGUE LA FIESTA!

I've been into it since the beginning basically since the mid 80's when I started DJing. Always remained into freestyle even though I was into other types of music like house, techno, r&b and old school hip hop. Even when I "retired" from DJing in 1993, I've remained into freestyle. I'll be 80 years old and I'll still be watching all the artists when they perform in my nursing home. LOL!

I was a diehard freestyle fan from like 86- 89. I would always pump that sound when i lived in penn, even though the friends that i hung out with weren't really into it. At the same time as i was into freestyle i also was into house, even though not as much as freestyle. Around 89 i found myself buying more house and when i moved to nyc and discovered the original sound factory in 1990, i totally fell out of freestyle and became a serious househead, which i am still. I never threw away my oldschool freestyle though, and from time to time when i felt nostalgic i would pop one on. Last year I went with a friend of mine, who is also posts on this board to the freestyle reunion concert. That event sparked that old interest in freestyle again. I found myself going through all of my oldies and even finidn some that i never had before. I'm still not really into the new freestyle, but then again i haven't really given it a chance...... But i do love the oldschool and im open to finding out where freestyle is going for 21st century. Posting and reading everyones posts on here also has gotten me more into freestyle..........nowadays i also love besides house, latin music, jazz, acid jazz, some hiphop, alternative and oldschool rock from time as well as r&b

I was always a hardcore freestyle fan, to the extent that when i was in highschool (1992-93) and radio started to leave Freestyle, i continued to listen to freestyle, and i would always try to get everyone into freestyle, in fact my love for Freestyle was so recognized that i was known as "the Freestyler" in highschool... *LOL* later on when Freestyle was completely banished from radio, i started listening to Hi-NRG/dance (Real McCoy, LaBouche, No Mercy, etc.) because it was the only style of music that could semi quench my thirst for Freestyle, since some of the Hi-NRG songs used chords similar to those used in Freestyle. It was not until 1998, when i first got access to the internet, that i realized that there was a Freestyle community out there, and that Freestyle was still being recorded. It was then, that i got back into Freestyle (in reality i never left freestyle, it left me) and i realized that now we would be together, til death do us part.
