Hello everyone!

Back in July, Proyecto1 posted about a tv show (CBS on Saturday night) called "Urban Latino" and mentioned that there was a connection between the show and freestyle.

I found the show's official website, and they have a survey you can fill out about what topics the viewers would like to see on the show. I filled out the survey and submitted it tonight. I've copied and pasted it here, and I'm hoping that everyone will follow the link I've posted. The link will take you right to the survey page, and you can tell them how much you'd like to see freestyle on the show.

Here's the link:

Here's my submission:

Hello!

Although I am Italian, I am a fan of Latino music, and of your show.

To me, it seems that whenever people talk of Latino music, they talk about the roots of the music, and jump to the recent "Latin Explosion" by discussing Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, and others.

It always seems that they forget that before that "explosion" occured, there was a latin explosion in the late 80's and early 90's called Freestyle. Artists like TKA, Sweet Sensation, The Cover Girls, George Lamond, India, Brenda K. Starr, Coro and others were all over the charts and radio.

I think that Urban Latino should give some airtime to freestyle. There are a lot of stories to tell: Clubs in the NY area are hosting "Freestyle Nights", Lisa Lisa was on Nickilodeon with a series called "Taina", Daphne Rubin-Vega (from Pajama Party) was in "Rent" on Broadway, George Lamond & TKA have joined forces to record new music together, Nyasia & Cynthia (both from MicMac Records) are working on or have new material out, BadBoyJoe just released his MegaMix Vol. 3 which includes a free "new school" cd, a 2 dvd set of freestyle music videos and interviews is being released in May, and finally, freestyle artist Judy Torres hosts a freestyle mix show every Sunday from 9-12 on NY radio station WKTU.

A search on freestyle music on the internet will show many sites dedicated to this music, like http://www.clubfreestyle.com .

I really believe that your viewers would enjoy seeing a segment on freestyle on your show. I hope you look into this suggestion.

okay chuck i did post as follows....

freestyle music..still a big part of the latin secene i witnessed how big it still is last thursday at the latino mix party given in new york at the Roxy nightclub..it felt like the puerto rican day parade that night. so much pride and great freestyle acts that night..and wondering why this music is so "underground" now compared to the mainstream..and ask any hispanic whats thier favorite music besides salsa..freestyle would most likely be the answer.in an time where most "dance" music consist of a top ten song remixed with a techno beat (how original) or techno with a repetitive boring format that any idiot in a studio can make in ten minutes..(i mean one of the top dance tracks right now playing in new york is a sample of eminems "empty with out me" over and over..it really sucks but its a big hit..or another mix of a sample of sugar hill gangs song which the remix just says over and over again and excerpt " i said a hip hop the hibbie to the hibbie to the hip hop you dont stop a rocking to the hip hop the hibbie the beat" by some women who sound as if its the only words they know how to say in english with the terrible accent and all!!! (wow where can i purchase this single!!).. do we not have more intelligent listeners now who can determine that this "hit" is really really bad?? its actually quite annoying but its a "number one hit with a bullet" I personally cringe and turn the station when i hear such songs.. real dance music is freestyle..and a big part of hispanic culture especially in the northeast just feel its a genre thats underestimated and thought of as "old school" but the market remains the thirst remains for freestyle.just seems like no one wants to take a chance on promoting it..again just from the crowd i was in the middle of last thursday made me feel as if i went back into the past..the whole club going crazy..dancing and having a good time.its one thing to hear a freestyle song on the radio but to be live in a club with people going nuts .. i quote from the master card commercials "priceless" bing back the real dance tracks and get rid of the "remixes" of the current dance trend..freestyle is definetly not "dead as disco"😛 I mean really i heard nayasias "feel what you feel " for the first time last week and then saw her preform live and was like "how could this shit not be playing on the air??" im lost..thats a song i would gladly pump up till my speakers blow out..and mannys "loves not that easy" but will i not hear either or on the radio?? why not!!!?? but horrible remixes i will hear all day long!! what is dance music today?? just a remix of the top ten..wheter it sounds good or not..its just force fed.wheter is good or not,,or terrible for that matter!!!

Well I did my part, who else is in. Here is what I had to say.

Now this is what I am talking about. A show about Latinos for Latinos and their friends.

First and for most I have been a fan of Urban Latino Magazine for many years now. I love the fact that the articals are written by latino's about our experience here in the USA.

The reason for the email is because I am a huge surporter of our music, not only the tradional Salsa, Merenge, but FREESTYLE. At one time freestyle was at the for front of the mainstream pop culture.

Show like MTV had a show for this type of music, it was called the "2nd Generation" with Tony Moran and Andy Panda. It was a break through show because it was the first of it's kind, LATIN. It reminds me a lot like your show. The only difference is that "2nd Generation" played freestyle music and was a big freestyle surporter. I know a couple of months ago you guys did a segment on freestyle music, which was great but short. I would LOVE to see more shows dedcated to this form of music. Freestyle is still in demand, even if it is in the underground.

However, there are many artist that still sing freestyle and they do get air play, Angelica, Willie Valintine, Nick Colon, Johnny O, Rockell, even the old school artist are making comebacks, Judy Torres (new matieral coming out soon), TKA (new matieral coming out soon), Nyaisa (new matieral already out), Latin Nation (new matieral already out), Seduction (new matieral coming out soon). Granted the demand is not the same as it once was, but it is still there.

Shows like Urban Latino can help promote the style agian. Remember after Salsa and Merenge, Latino's perfer (FREESTYLE).

Also you guys can have segments about radio sation's dedicated to freestyle. KTU 103.5 (Judy Torres)and Latino Mix 105 Freestyle Flash Back (Dimand Boy). Club's like the Roxy in new york and Club Abliss in Queens have show catered to our music.

Keep up the good work and remember it's about us LATINOS.

Thanks

Al

no its not just about the latinos...cause there are a lot of people from diffrent races that love freestyle as well and there are also performers from diffrent races

i just like to make that clear cause a lot of times thats all i see is us latinos and our music...freestyle is a music for the people and i get offended by this statement

also i will fill out the survey, cause freestyle needs to be put on the airwaves

thank you, toni. it is not just about Latinos cause i know alot of people who are not Latino, like myself, who love this kind of music.

survey

Ok, so here's what I had to say!
Crap, I cant get it on here!! Ok, i basically said what everyone else has said, about Freestyle being around way before The Ricky Martins of the world came about! And, that with eveything going on in the Middle East, it would be nice to see something on tv about positive music that comes from the heart! I have been a Freestyle lover since I was roller skating to Shannon's "Let the Music Play". I'm 27 now, and will be a fan till I die!

Chuck D, you are great. Thanks for always motivating us to do good things for freestyle. I submitted my reply to the survey. Thanks

Peace,
Manny
